Chapter 61: Chapter 61: The Nine-Tails Loses a Limb
In plain sight, a series of swirling ripples began to distort the space around the Nine-Tails' head. It was as if a vortex had suddenly appeared on the surface of a calm lake. The fox's head twisted, nearly snapping under the pressure of the invisible whirlpool.
"Roar!" The Nine-Tails let out a blood-curdling scream, its enormous body recoiling in fear. At the very last second, it managed to break free from Fugaku's Mangekyo Sharingan genjutsu! It pulled its head out of Kamui's range just in time.
"Space itself… was twisting." The Nine-Tails felt a chill of terror. That attack just now—if it had landed—could have killed it outright. No defense of its own could withstand an assault like that.
Seeing the Nine-Tails break free, Akira immediately shifted his strategy. He refocused his gaze on its front right leg, his left eye narrowing, channeling chakra and ocular power into his Sharingan. Akira was determined to cripple the fox's movement, knowing that if he succeeded, it would pose little threat even if drawn into Kamui space. Only by some impossible stroke of luck would it fall onto Obito's phasing body within the Kamui realm.
Meanwhile, Fugaku's right eye locked onto the Nine-Tails' head, pouring chakra and ocular power into his right eye.
"Amaterasu!"
With a loud whoosh, intense black flames burst forth, engulfing the Nine-Tails' head. Fugaku's attack struck so fast that the fox couldn't evade.
"Roaaar!" The Nine-Tails roared in anger as scarlet chakra gushed from its body like a geyser. The fiery black Amaterasu flames continued to burn until the fox swung its head around like a windmill, using its chakra to fling the flames away bit by bit. Soon, the flames dispersed, but before the Nine-Tails could breathe a sigh of relief, it noticed a swirling vortex forming around its right front leg.
"Roar…" The fox let out a piercing scream as its massive body toppled forward. Akira's Kamui attack had snapped the Nine-Tails' leg, severing it cleanly and causing it to crash heavily to the ground.
Watching this, Fugaku couldn't help but marvel. "So, this is Akira's ocular power? The ability to warp space—a truly remarkable jutsu."
The Nine-Tails let out a roar filled with fear and anger. For a moment, it had genuinely thought it was going to die!
Hearing the Nine-Tails' pained screams, those on the other battlefields couldn't help but glance toward the source of the sound. Although the field was cloaked in Amaterasu's black flames, they could still catch glimpses of the beast's fallen form. Hiruzen Sarutobi, hearing the Nine-Tails' scream, felt a shiver down his spine. So, things have reached this point? Did Uchiha Akira's Mangekyo Sharingan jutsu fail to kill it?
On another front, Duy, preparing to open the Eighth Gate, cracked a smile.
"Looks like they've given the Nine-Tails quite the beating. I'd better step it up on my end too."
Nearby, Obito's eyes narrowed as he let Minato's attacks phase through him, glancing in the direction of the Nine-Tails' pained cries. It seems there's a powerful Uchiha on that battlefield who's given the Nine-Tails a serious wound.
"Madara," Minato said, his gaze steely as he addressed Obito. "See? I told you—I trust my comrades in Konoha."
Obito sneered. "Hokage, you're celebrating too soon. Don't forget, once the Nine-Tails is extracted, Uzumaki Kushina is as good as dead!"
At this, Minato's gaze turned cold, his killing intent like a winter chill. Kushina was his greatest weakness. Suddenly, a change overcame him, orange markings appeared around his eyes as he entered Sage Mode.
"I may not use Sage Mode often," he said, "but the power boost it grants is just what I need to finish this masked Madara off!"
With a thought, Minato sent a flurry of Flying Thunder God kunai hurtling toward Obito, each wrapped in razor-sharp wind chakra.
"Sage Mode, huh? Sensei, you've kept more than a few tricks up your sleeve…" Obito thought, feeling a jolt of unease. He knew all too well the power boost of Sage Mode—several times greater than normal.
Sensei's speed… he's faster than before! Obito's heart sank as he allowed Minato's attacks to pass through him. I might try to use Izanagi to fake defeat and lure Sensei into a trap… Or maybe I'll just feign defeat myself…
After clashing with Minato for a couple of exchanges, Obito made up his mind.
I'll go with feigning defeat. If word about Izanagi's effect reached Konoha, Sensei might be on guard. Better to take a calculated risk with a surprise attack…
In their first clash, he'd been outplayed by Minato's Flying Thunder God and had even been marked by it. At the time, he hadn't noticed, but after bonding with his Zetsu armor, the two chakras had blended enough for Zetsu to uncover the marking.
With this newfound knowledge, Obito devised a bold plan: to use the marking itself as a weapon against his former teacher.
You never imagined, Sensei, that your own Flying Thunder God mark would become the key to your downfall, Obito thought with a dark smile, confident in his ability to deceive.
Meanwhile, back on the battlefield with the Nine-Tails, Akira wiped a trail of blood from his left eye, smiling as he looked at the unsteady fox. With one leg down, taking the beast down had become far simpler.
"All that's left is to reseal the Nine-Tails back into Kushina, then join Minato in dealing with Obito. Once Obito's out of the way, Nagato will be trapped with no way out."
With this in mind, Akira's spirits lifted. If they could deal with Obito and Nagato, peace might finally be within reach.
