Chapter 25: Chapter 25: Three Tomoe Sharingan—The Legend of the Eyes
Time flew by like a swinging pendulum, jumping from late March to early June. Over the past two months, the 60th cohort of genin were busy with various D-rank missions. These assignments typically involved mundane tasks, such as babysitting, assisting with farm work, or clearing garbage from water canals.
The pay for these missions was meager, further reduced by the village's cut, as well as shares for the supervising Jonin and teammates. Without patience, frustration was almost inevitable—especially for Team 7, whose members had romanticized visions of guarding Fire Nation dignitaries or battling formidable foes immediately after graduation.
In contrast, Team 8 embraced these tasks with diligence. Yagyu, Hinata, and Shino understood that these missions were an opportunity to cultivate patience and strengthen their teamwork.
Yagyu and Hinata even refrained from using shadow clones for these tasks, opting instead to complete them personally. Unlike Kakashi's laid-back attitude, Kurenai, a first-time Jonin leader, was deeply invested in her students' progress.
After each mission, Kurenai would teach them foundational ninja skills typically reserved for genin. This included tree climbing and water-walking techniques, both of which Yagyu and Hinata had already mastered. She then assessed their chakra natures and even brought out genjutsu scrolls to test their compatibility with yin-aligned chakra.
Through these assessments, Kurenai became increasingly attached to Yagyu. She began to see him as the perfect protégé to inherit her expertise.
Shino and Hinata, however, lacked the aptitude for genjutsu, as neither possessed yin-aligned chakra. As a result, Kurenai could teach them only the basics and had no say in their clan-specific techniques.
Yagyu, on the other hand, showed extraordinary talent. Within a single day, he mastered the genjutsu from Kurenai's scrolls, demonstrating not only his possession of yin-aligned chakra but also a natural aptitude for genjutsu.
This realization motivated Kurenai to devote herself entirely to Yagyu's development, often coaching him in front of Shino and Hinata. Over the next two months, Yagyu's skills grew by leaps and bounds.
His proficiency in genjutsu, in particular, advanced from zero to surpassing all his peers. Even with genjutsu alone, Yagyu was confident he could defeat the other members of the Konoha 12.
This confidence stemmed from a major breakthrough: his Sharingan had evolved to the three-tomoe stage.
The transformation was largely thanks to his Genjutsu Specialist talent, which amplified his control over yin-aligned chakra. Genjutsu, a yin-style technique, synergized perfectly with the Sharingan—a bloodline limit also rooted in yin-style chakra.
Before reaching the three-tomoe stage, the Sharingan primarily served as an analytical and copying tool. The true legend of the Sharingan, however, began with the three-tomoe stage. At this level, the user became an elite Jonin-level specialist in genjutsu and an unparalleled force in one-on-one combat.
The Mangekyō Sharingan might be the stuff of myths, but the three-tomoe Sharingan was the foundation of the Uchiha Clan's fearsome reputation. Its abilities were so potent that it was dubbed the "eye of genjutsu," allowing users to cast illusions effortlessly with just a glance.
For opponents specializing in genjutsu, the Sharingan's innate ability to reflect illusions back on their caster made it a nightmare. Kurenai herself had experienced this firsthand against Itachi Uchiha in the original story.
Fighting an Uchiha was akin to willingly forfeiting one's visual advantage—a handicap far more lethal than losing half a health bar in a game. In reality, falling victim to a fatal illusion meant actual death.
Yagyu's breakthrough likely resulted from his intense genjutsu training, which honed his control over yin-aligned chakra and stimulated its production. With his Sharingan evolving naturally into the three-tomoe stage, Yagyu's skills surged.
Now, his genjutsu abilities outclassed even Kurenai's. The techniques she had painstakingly taught him were not only mastered but could also be executed without hand signs.
The disparity between ordinary talent and Yagyu's abilities became glaringly apparent. This was the legendary power of the Sharingan, a gift only a few could wield.
Beyond combat, Yagyu's relationship with Hinata also grew exponentially during these two months. After every mission, Yagyu would invite her to his home for training. Despite her shyness, Hinata never declined.
Initially, Yagyu remained respectful and restrained, merely serving as her sparring partner. Once Hinata grew more comfortable with their private sessions, however, Yagyu—self-proclaimed "master of nurturing"—began subtly pushing boundaries.
During their taijutsu sparring, Yagyu started employing unpredictable tactics. Using his Sharingan to spot and exploit Hinata's weaknesses, he orchestrated seemingly accidental close-contact moments. These "coincidental" hugs and interactions initially left Hinata flustered, often causing her to steam up and faint.
Over time, though, Hinata grew accustomed to these moments, gradually developing an immunity to such physical proximity.
After training sessions, Hinata often stayed for meals. At home, her reserved nature kept her from revealing her substantial appetite. Only at Yagyu's house could she truly indulge, as he always prepared enough food to satisfy her.
Feeling guilty about relying so much on Yagyu, Hinata began contributing by using a shadow clone to assist in meal preparation. She also started giving Yagyu her share of mission rewards to cover the cost of food, knowing that his earnings barely covered her appetite.
In this way, their dynamic became almost like a married couple's. Hinata even began helping with household chores, including laundry. Yagyu, in turn, praised her as a "perfect future wife," leaving Hinata blushing furiously and spurring her to work even harder.
Thankfully, Hinata's father, Hiashi, had shifted his focus to her younger, more gifted sister. Unaware of Hinata's daily visits to Yagyu's home, Hiashi had no reason to intervene. Otherwise, Yagyu might have found himself under the scrutiny of a powerful Jonin.
Time passed swiftly in this blissful routine. On one particular morning, at 9 a.m., Team 8 gathered as usual at their designated spot, awaiting Kurenai.
With her characteristic punctuality, Kurenai appeared before them in a burst of speed.
"This time," she began with a smile, "your performance has been excellent. Every mission has received high praise from the clients."
"Therefore, I've decided—today, we'll take on a higher-ranked mission!"
