Chapter 62: The serpent's lair
Naruto dashed through the dark hall, the distant sounds of battle grew louder with every passing moment. The narrow passage seemed to stretch on endlessly, enveloped in the darkest of shadows but in the distance, he could see a faint light that urged him forward, guiding him to the serpent's lair.
As he reached the end of the tunnel, he stepped into a vast chamber dimly lit by a number of burning braziers. His eyes narrowed against the sudden burst of light, his pupils contracted, adjusting to the flame's assault.
Taking a moment to assess his surroundings, he was met with the sight of a small army of Sound Shinobi engaged in a brutal sparring session.
They fought with lethal intent, a disturbing norm in the ruthless Otogakure.
Naruto's heart pounded, he wanted to intervene but his focus was reigned in by his intense desire.
Amidst the heat of battle, Naruto's gaze found Sasuke. He stood alone, facing off against a relentless wave of Sound Ninja. Despite the overwhelming odds, Sasuke held his ground. The red in his eyes and the blue of his lightning illuminated the dim of night. The shadows of his foes flickered from one wall to the other as they danced to the song of a thousand birds.
A sharp pang of guilt clenched at Naruto's chest. 'I promised Sakura I'd bring Sasuke back to the village, back to our team,' he thought, frustration bubbling up within him. 'Yet here I am, and all I can do is watch.' The realization hit him like a physical blow: the chasm between them had widened, and Sasuke was slipping deeper into the darkness within his vengeful heart.
His fist tightened, trembling with a profound sense of helplessness that seemed to permeate every fiber of his being....
On the far side of the training area, Orochimaru watched from his carved throne, his presence cast a chill over the battlefield. His aura emanated an oppressive sense of dread that seeped into the very ground below.
His dark hair hung over his pale, haggard face, beads of sweat trickled down his brow and clung to his skin. His arms, a sickly shade of violet, were wrapped in medical bandages.
Orochimaru's disheveled state made him look vulnerable, But the Sound Ninja knew better than to take him lightly, for those who had done so before were already long dead.
It was to the relief of the Sound Shinobi that Orochimaru's gaze wasn't set on them. Instead, his piercing eyes followed Sasuke, analyzing every movement with twisted fascination.
Suddenly, his eyes trembled and faded. His head shot up suddenly, he tried to hold back his voice, but a muffled grunt forced its way out.
As the agonizing sensation waned, Orochimaru's body slumped forward. His shoulders sagged and his chest heaved with each heavy breath.
A young girl that stood behind approached him in a hurry, holding onto a bowl with a green concoction inside it. "L-Lord Orochimaru!, it's time for your medicine..." Karin said urgently, her voice trembling with fear. Orochimaru's piercing gaze shifted to the approaching kunoichi, his eyes narrowing as he took in the sight of the bowl. With a silent nod, he allowed Karin to feed him, the bitter liquid slid down his throat in an almost ritualistic manner.
Once Orochimaru had taken his final sip, Karin stepped back, her senses overwhelmed by the evil chakra emanating from him. The intensity of the dark energy pressed down on her, making it difficult for her to steady her breath. She bowed respectfully and said, "Please excuse me, Lord Orochimaru."
She turned to leave, her footsteps muffled by the raging battlefield. However, before she could take her tenth step, a snake slithered out from the shadows and coiled around her body, tightening its grip with a menacing hiss.
A cold voice sounded behind her, sending chills down her spine. "Your medicine, it's not up to my standards." Karin felt the snake's grip tighten further, suffocating her. "If you value your life, then let this be the last time you fail me." Orochimaru's words carried a chilling finality.
Karin nodded frantically, her face pale as she struggled to catch her breath, in that moment, her mind envisioned her gruesome end.
The snake released its hold and Karin desperately gasped for air, coughing as she tried to steady herself. Slowly, the snake slithered its way back towards Orochimaru, its scales glistening in the dim light. It scaled his leg, coiling its way up his body and slipping into the sleeve of his robe, disappearing from sight.
Karin held onto her arm cradling it as she limped away. Her heart raced as she disappeared into the shadows, her body trembling from the encounter.
Orochimaru's gaze returned to the scene before him, his expression turned stoic now that the drug flowed in his veins, alleviating some of the pain he's been forced to endure.
Naruto looked on with a cold expression, taking in the scene. He took a deep breath and walked right into the heart of the battlefield. Kunai and shuriken whizzed dangerously close to him, but Naruto continued forward with an unnerving confidence. The Sound Ninja were so engrossed in their skirmishes that they failed to register his presence
Unbothered, Naruto took a deep breath. His voice thundered through the dimly lit chamber, "OROCHIMARU!!" The name boomed off the stone walls, silencing the clamor of battle and stunning everyone present.
The battles all but stopped. Sasuke, caught mid-strike, narrowed his eyes as he turned. His Sharingan flared as he scanned the area, searching for the source of the disturbance.
As if drawn by an invisible force, his gaze locked onto Naruto. The shock and recognition flickered across Sasuke's face, momentarily cracking his composure.
The crimson glow of his Sharingan faded, his eyes reverting to their original obsidian black.
He had not been aware of Naruto's presence in the secret base until this very moment.
Orochimaru lifted his gaze, the dim light cast an eerie darkness on his features, further intensifying the venom in his eyes. His piercing glare stuck on Naruto as he slowly approached him...
The Sound Ninja stood frozen in place like a field of statues, their movements arrested by the shockwave of events unfolding before them.
Naruto moved through them undisturbed like a gentle breeze, for a heartbeat time seemed to freeze around them.
Sasuke's expression was nothing if not stoic, though the uncertainty in his eyes as they followed Naruto betrayed his inner turmoil. Time resumed its natural flow. But what he expected never came; Naruto walked past him without uttering a single word.
Soon thereafter, a masked Sound Ninja with light-colored, dreaded hair snapped out of his petrified state and placed his arm on Naruto's shoulder from behind. "Hey kid, when you speak Lord Orochimaru's name, you are to do so respectfully." The ninja's grip tightened, and in a shocking turn of events, Naruto turned back to face him only to say, "Sorry about this, but I can't talk right now."
With a swift motion, he thrust his elbow into the man's gut. The impact sent a powerful shockwave through the ninja's body, the force phased through and emerged out of his back in a sudden, impactful burst.
The man staggered back, his grip slipped off of Naruto's shoulder as he moved his arms to clutch his stomach. His eyes widened in shock, breath hitching as he tried to process what had just happened
Naruto continued, leaving the man behind. The sudden shock jolted the other Sound Shinobi out of their daze. Their expressions filled with mockery and disdain as their eyes were drawn to the stunned Shinobi behind naruto, a few of them observed him from the dark, their thoughts filled with murderous intent.
One of them erupted in laughter. "Gahaha Noboru, what are you doing? Don't tell me you're scared of the kid!"
Noboru's mind was a storm of thoughts, each one crashing into the next with chaotic intensity. 'What strength!' he marveled, recalling the sheer force that had ripped through him. He swallowed the blood that had pooled in his mouth, a single drop slipping past his lips, hidden beneath his mask. 'I can't afford to show any weakness, or these bastards will aim for my head.'
From the shadows of a dark corner, Tayuya stepped forward, her presence comanding the attention of the Sound Ninja. She weaved the hand signs, Ne,Tori, "Sound Release: Noise Amplification," she announced. Her voice amplified, booming powerfully throughout the room. "Step aside, he's here by the benevolent will of Lord Orochimaru," she declared. The moment the name was uttered, the Sound Shinobi's expressions darkened. They parted like the red sea making way for Naruto's advance.
Feigning a loss of interest, Noboru turned away and slipped into the crowd, disappearing from view.
Naruto stood before Orochimaru. From atop his elevated throne, Orochimaru glanced down at Naruto, their eyes locked in a fierce battle of wills. Orochimaru's gaze narrowed, his serpentine eyes gleaming with a predatory intensity. The air between them seemed to crackle with tension, as if the very room held its breath in anticipation of what was to come.
Naruto's fists trembled at his sides. It was with a heavy sigh that he released his grip, his hands fell open, as if he had let go of his pride. Then, Naruto dropped to his knees and pressed his forehead to the ground. "Orochimaru, take me as your disciple..." he declared, his voice filled with resolve and humility.
Sasuke's jaw tightened. The sight before him irked him deeply. 'What a pathetic loser,' he thought, a surge of irritation building up within him.
Orochimaru chuckled, a bone-chilling and sinister sound that echoed through the chamber. He closed his eyes briefly, savoring the moment. The Sound Ninja flinched at the unsettling noise, their expressions shifting uneasily. Gradually, the chuckle faded as Orochimaru's eyes slowly opened, his pupils sharpening to razor-thin slits. "And what if I refuse?" he taunted, his gaze fixed on Naruto.
Naruto's grip on the ground tightened, the stone floor fracturing beneath him.
Red chakra swirled around him like a raging fire. Slowly, he raised his head. As his gaze locked with the legendary Sannin Orochimaru, his eyes became that of the demon within him, blood-red eyes laden with a deep-rooted hatred. "I won't take no for an answer!" he declared.
Orochimaru's smile fell, "How bold..." he hissed, his voice dripping with insidious malice. "To be threatened by a mere child... have I truly fallen so low," he added, the sinister undertone sending chills through the air.
A vile sensation flooded through Naruto, but his resolve remained unmoved. "Don't get me wrong, I've fought you before... I know that I stand no chance against you." He paused for a moment, his eyes steady. "I don't know how long I've been stuck in that cage, but it gave me all the time I needed. If I were you, I'd be afraid.... because I'm not the one you'll have to face."
As Naruto's words hung in the air, his body underwent a dramatic transformation. His teeth sharpened into a set of menacing fangs, and his nails grew into razor-sharp claws. The transformation was swift, accompanied by a surge of fiery chakra that exploded outwards, forcing the surrounding Sound Shinobi to the ground.
Orochimaru's mind raced as he came to a chilling conclusion. 'So... he struck a deal with the demon,' he thought, his mind conjuring the image of the Nine-Tailed Fox, a massive, ancient creature with blazing red eyes that seemed to pierce through the soul. Its nine colossal tails, effortlessly leveling entire mountains with a single sweep, and its maddening roar shook the world with unspeakable horror.
The air was thick with tension, the scene before him a testament to the raw, untamed power of the demon within Naruto. Orochimaru's expression grew serious, his eyes reflecting the fiery inferno of the chakra, as if the flames of the demon danced within them.
