Chapter 3: Danzo—"My Grandson Gengetsu Has the Potential to Be Hokage!"
The Next Day
It was a rare day off, so Shimura Gengetsu took the opportunity to sleep in, not getting up until noon.
Ebikyo wouldn't be coming today, but that didn't mean Gengetsu planned to be idle.
Going into the village to farm bonds was too inefficient—training at home was a better use of his time.
For the system to establish a bond, three conditions had to be met:
Both parties must face each other.
Both parties must know each other's names.
Shimura must leave a deep impression on the other party.
So far, only the rewards from his parents had been exceptions to these rules.
To adults, he was still just a child—they didn't take him seriously. This made fulfilling the third condition particularly difficult.
Otherwise, the two guards assigned to protect him, Aburame Seiji and Yamanaka Ryo, would have already triggered at least a basic bond.
To them, Gengetsu was just a mission objective, not someone noteworthy.
For now, the best place to farm rewards was still the ninja academy.
For example, he had acquired his Fire attribute from school. If things went well, he might one day collect all five elemental affinities, maybe even the Yin attribute.
Gengetsu stepped into the courtyard, picked up a child-sized practice dagger, and began training with basic sword strikes.
In this world, swords and knives weren't strictly differentiated, but in Gengetsu's opinion, they were all just variations of knives—even the so-called Kusanagi Sword was, in reality, a type of blade.
Still, he saw no point in correcting people.
Since he had a swordsmanship talent, which would later reach Ultimate level upon becoming a Genin, it would be a waste not to practice diligently.
Despite the existence of powerful ninjutsu, most ninjas in the world of Naruto were still just mortals.
In many cases, a well-placed sword strike was just as effective—if not more—than ninjutsu.
Ordinary ninjas didn't have access to countless jutsu. Most relied on taijutsu and ninja tools for battle, using ninjutsu either to gain an advantage or for a decisive strike.
Did people really think everyone could spam Rasengan like Naruto?
Whoosh!
Whoosh!
The sound of blade swings echoed through the courtyard. The golden sunlight bathed Gengetsu's forehead, making the fine beads of sweat glisten.
His training continued from after lunch until sunset, only stopping when a low, familiar voice called out to him.
"Gengetsu."
Shimura Gengetsu turned to see a tall, wrinkled old man standing there.
A bandage still covered his left eye, and his face bore its usual cold, grim expression. Yet, when he looked at Gengetsu, there was a rare smile—though it was stiff and unnatural, as if he wasn't used to making such expressions.
This man was none other than Shimura Danzo—
The Dark Pot of the Ninja World.
The 5.5th Hokage.
The strongest "Pot Shadow" in history.
"Old man, you're back."
Gengetsu greeted him casually. Ever since he could speak, he had only ever called Danzo 'old man'—never 'grandfather.'
Danzo didn't mind. Or rather, he knew that even if he did, it wouldn't change anything.
He could be cold to outsiders, manipulate and scheme against anyone.
But Shimura Gengetsu was his only living relative—the sole continuation of his bloodline.
He had high hopes for this boy—not only to inherit Root, but to one day become Hokage.
And so far, Gengetsu's talent has not disappointed him.
It was comparable to Kakashi when he was younger—barely after starting school, he had already reached graduation standards.
The only pity?
He lacked a Kekkei Genkai.
Danzo's single visible eye dimmed slightly.
To him, no matter how strong an ordinary ninja was, there was always a limit.
Only Sharingan or Wood Release could truly elevate both himself and Gengetsu to greater heights.
Still, recent village developments gave him ideas…
As Gengetsu greeted Danzo, the system prompt rang twice in his mind.
—
[Host has activated a Family Bond with Shimura Danzo—reward received: Wind Attribute (Genius).]
[Host has reached Stage Two Bond with Shimura Danzo—reward received: Wind Attribute Nature Transformation (Grandmaster).]
—
Since this was his first time meeting Danzo since activating the system, it wasn't surprising that he was receiving the rewards now.
The two rewards fused together, subtly altering Gengetsu's aura—his presence now felt sharper, more forceful.
Especially with Wind Attribute Nature Transformation—Danzo was arguably the strongest Wind Style user in Konoha and among the top wind users in the entire ninja world.
Not just anyone could slice through Susanoo with wind-enhanced shuriken.
Danzo noticed the change in Gengetsu and snapped out of his thoughts. Slowly, he walked toward the courtyard.
"I have time today. It's been a while since I checked on your training. Let me see how much you've improved."
A Test of Skill
"Ah? Oh."
Gengetsu tightened his grip on his blade, then rushed forward without hesitation.
A faint distortion of air rippled around the sword's edge—Danzo's eye flickered in surprise.
Nature Transformation?
Good, good.
Mastering Nature Transformation at six years old… His grandson has the potential to be Hokage!
In an instant, Gengetsu closed the distance and swung his short sword down.
Danzo merely tilted his body slightly, effortlessly dodging.
Gengetsu responded with a swift low kick, which Danzo blocked with his arm. Using the force of the impact, Gengetsu twisted, pulled away, then lunged again.
Even though Danzo was at least an Elite Jōnin, meaning Gengetsu stood no chance against him, he didn't hold back.
He used everything—his swordsmanship, his Wind and Fire ninjutsu—without restraint.
He had already claimed all available Stage Two bond rewards—there was no one in the world less likely to actually hurt him than Danzo.
After the Sparring Match
Fifteen minutes later, Gengetsu finally stopped, breathing heavily, his chakra nearly depleted.
"Well done, Gengetsu. But don't let it get to your head—you're just a genius, not a true powerhouse yet."
Danzo's stiff smile had fully formed—he was genuinely pleased.
Gengetsu had exceeded his expectations.
His mastery of Wind Transformation was excellent. His Fire Style ninjutsu was also well-developed.
Now, if only he could change those eyes…
Yes.
The future of Konoha would belong to the Shimura clan!
With that thought, Danzo led Gengetsu back inside.
As they ate, Gengetsu suddenly looked up and asked:
"Old man, you seemed in a bad mood when you came back. Who pissed you off?"
Danzo took a bite of rice, his tone indifferent.
"Who else? Sarutobi Hiruzen. I failed to assassinate him today. Looks like my path to Hokage will be delayed again."
Gengetsu: "..."
