Chapter 373: 372-Indicator

Renjiro woke up feeling like he had been hit by a boulder.

His body ached, a dull, persistent soreness settling into his muscles as he groggily pulled himself up from his futon. The dim light filtering through his window told him that it was already late evening.

'Damn… I overslept,' he thought, rubbing the sleep from his eyes.

He hadn't meant to sleep for this long—what was supposed to be a quick rest had turned into an entire day lost.

His body had simply shut down, forcing him into recovery after the strain he had put himself through. Between unlocking the Sixth Gate, his continuous training with the other gates, and the repeated use of his Mangekyō, it was no surprise that his body had demanded rest.

Still, the wasted time gnawed at him.

"No use moping about it. Time to get to work," he muttered, staggering to the washbasin.

His reflection glared back—pale, shadows pooling beneath bloodshot eyes, a dried rivulet of crimson trailing from one nostril. He splashed icy water on his face, the shock jolting him awake.

After quickly freshening up, he headed straight to the village centre. The streets of Konoha were alive with their usual evening bustle—merchants closing their stalls, shinobi returning from missions, and civilians moving about under the glow of lanterns.

He had one objective in mind tonight which was testing the Mark of Dominion on other people.

His clones would make the process far more efficient. If he did it alone, gathering enough data would take too much time and time was not something he had.

Forming the familiar cross-hand sign, Renjiro muttered under his breath, "Shadow Clone Jutsu."

"Poof!"

"Poof!"

Two identical copies of himself materialized beside him, their faces mirroring his exhaustion. The thick white smoke from their appearance dispersed in the night air.

Renjiro eyed them, weighing risks. Dominion Marks on clones could amplify their efficacy, considering they were going to conduct their tests in the village, but uncertainty gnawed at him.

'How many can I sustain?'

The Mangekyo's toll was cumulative; he'd learned that the hard way.

"You two know what to do," Renjiro finally said, keeping his tone sharp and to the point.

"Find people, mark them, observe the results. We regroup in two hours."

The clones nodded in unison before disappearing into the city, heading off in different directions.

Renjiro himself moved toward the Uchiha Clan District, figuring that if there was anyone who might notice an unfamiliar mark on their body, it would be another Uchiha.

Meanwhile, one of Renjiro's clones navigated the crowded evening market, scanning for a potential target. The smell of grilled meats and spices filled the air, mixing with the lively chatter of merchants and customers.

His eyes landed on an old woman, hunched slightly as she haggled aggressively with a vendor over the price of vegetables.

"Perfect."

The clone activated its Mangekyo, six-star pupils spinning. Without hesitation, the clone brushed past her, fingers lightly tapping her shoulder.

The moment the Mark of Dominion formed on her, the connection snapped into place. The mark gave him an immediate sense of her position, as if a small tether had linked him to her.

More interestingly, the mark's color shifted faintly—a soft yellow hue pulsed for a few seconds before fading back to black.

'Hmm.. it's not the silver or blue I saw yesterday.' the clone thought.

Then something clicked in his mind.

"Fear?" The clone did not know how, the word just came to him which was oddly strange.

It then narrowed its eyes. The woman didn't seem frightened—at least, not outwardly.

He casually lingered near a fruit stall, pretending to inspect apples while eavesdropping on her conversation.

"You expect me to pay full price for this?!" the woman scoffed, pointing a gnarled finger at the vendor. "Back in my day, merchants weren't this greedy!"

The vendor sighed, rubbing his temples. "Ma'am, it's the same price as always."

The old woman scowled, grip tightening around her walking stick. "Hmph! If I had my way, Konoha's economy would be better managed!"

Renjiro's clone almost chuckled.

'So the yellow pulse wasn't actual fear—more like general stress or frustration. But when you think about it, they all fall on the same spectrum. It's that they are on the milder side.'

He observed her for another few minutes before releasing the mark.

The second clone had made his way to the outskirts of the village, where he found an elderly man sitting alone on a bench, quietly watching the sky. He looked peaceful enough, so the clone decided he would be the second test subject.

Activating his Mangekyō, the clone subtly placed the mark on the old man's arm as he walked by.

Immediately, the connection formed, locking the man's position into Renjiro's mind.

Then the mark flared red for a moment before fading.

"Anger?"

That was strange. The man didn't look angry. His face remained calm, his gaze still fixed on the sky.

Renjiro's clone took a seat on a nearby bench, pretending to be deep in thought while secretly listening in.

A moment later, the man exhaled sharply. "Damn landlord raised my rent again," he muttered to himself, shaking his head. "Konoha's getting too expensive."

Renjiro blinked.

'So the mark reacts to emotion but doesn't give me direct thoughts… Interesting.'

This confirmed that the colors were more like emotional indicators, rather than a direct mind-reading ability.

'That's a relief. Hearing random people's thoughts all day would drive me insane. Dealing with my clones' is hard enough already.'

After a few more minutes of observation, Renjiro dispelled the mark, the connection snapping shut.

Renjiro himself had reached the Uchiha training grounds, where a young genin was going through a series of basic exercises. The boy—probably no older than eight—was running through a standard katon jutsu drill, perfecting his Great Fireball Technique.

'He'll do.'

Renjiro approached casually, his presence unnoticed as the boy finished another fireball. The moment the genin paused to catch his breath, Renjiro's gaze locked onto him.

His Mangekyō activated, and with a mere flicker of thought, the Mark of Dominion formed on the back of the boy's right shoulder.

Renjiro watched.

Waited.

The genin frowned slightly, rolling his shoulder.

Then… he shrugged and continued training.

Renjiro narrowed his eyes.

'Did he not notice?'

Even as the mark pulsed faintly, the boy gave no indication that he felt anything wrong. No flicker of unease, no hesitation—he simply continued his drills, completely oblivious.

'Interesting.'

Unlike the civilians, who had no chakra training and were still susceptible to the effects of the mark, a shinobi didn't even register it.

Just as Renjiro was about to analyze this further, a sudden wave of vertigo hit him.

His vision blurred, the world tilting slightly. He instinctively braced himself, his breath catching as his head throbbed painfully.

His Mangekyō burned, a deep, pulsing ache forming behind his eyes.

"What the—"

Then it hit him.

Three.

He had placed three marks simultaneously.

And his body was rejecting it.

"So that's my limit?" he thought, gritting his teeth through the pain.

Slowly, he deactivated one of the marks—the one on the elderly man. Immediately, the pain lessened, the weight on his mind easing.

"I'll have to be careful with this."

Despite the drawbacks, there was one final thing he noticed.

The mark on the genin's shoulder was still active.

And—

It was glowing blue.

Renjiro's eyes narrowed.

Blue. Calm.

Red. Anger.

Yellow. Fear or Stress.

A smirk tugged at his lips.

"Did I just turn into a walking emotion detector?"

Shaking his head, he sighed.

"Well, at least it has its uses."
