Chapter 356: 355- Does that make him my father?
The room seemed to close in on them, the oppressive silence amplifying the weight of Kushina's revelation. Renjiro stood motionless, his broad frame cast in sharp contrast against the now shadowed walls. His dark eyes were fixed on Kushina, piercing yet unreadable, as the seconds ticked by.
Kushina shifted her weight uncomfortably. She could feel the tension emanating from Renjiro and it only deepened her guilt. She had always known this day would come—the day when her mistake during the Magatama process would resurface.
Her vibrant red hair seemed to dim in the sombre atmosphere as she fidgeted, clasping and unclasping her hands. 'He's going to hate me,' she thought, swallowing hard. The thought weighed on her heart like a stone sinking in water.
She remembered the Magatama process vividly. It was supposed to be a sacred ritual, one passed down through the Uzumaki clan for generations. Her role had been to guide and support Renjiro as he inherited this core heritage.
But instead of using her own chakra to facilitate the process, she had inadvertently drawn upon Kurama's. She'd lost control for a brief, crucial moment, and Kurama's volatile chakra had seeped into Renjiro's chakra network.
At the time, she had hoped that it wouldn't cause any permanent damage. But now, looking at the confusion on Renjiro's face, she realized how foolish that hope had been.
Renjiro remained silent, his sharp mind racing. He rummaged through his memories, replaying every interaction he had ever had with Kushina. Her fiery personality, her unwavering loyalty, her dedication to him as both a teacher and a friend—it all pointed to someone who would never intentionally harm him.
But trust, no matter how deep, was not synonymous with blind faith. He couldn't ignore the possibility of betrayal, however slim.
His gaze flicked over Kushina, searching for signs of deceit in her body language. Her clenched fists, her averted eyes, the tension in her shoulders—all told him she was deeply remorseful. But remorse could follow intentional harm as much as accidental.
The silence stretched on until, finally, something clicked in Renjiro's mind. He straightened slightly, the faintest flicker of realization sparking in his eyes. "It's because of Kurama's chakra, isn't it?" he asked, his voice steady but laced with accusation.
Kushina looked up at him, her vivid violet eyes softening with regret. "Yes," she admitted, her voice barely above a whisper.
Renjiro's blood boiled. His hands clenched into fists at his sides, his nails digging into his palms. He growled under his breath, the sound low and guttural. "That damned tailed beast!" he muttered.
"First, it ruins my chance at learning Senjutsu, and now this? He is the biggest c*ckblocker!"
For the first time in a long time, Renjiro lost his cool in front of Kushina. Even going as far as cursing.
"Huh?" Kushina blurted out, startled by the unfamiliar term. Her brows furrowed in confusion as she thought to herself, 'Cock...locker? What's he talking about?'
Renjiro noticed her perplexed expression and sighed, running a hand through his dark hair. "I planned on learning Senjutsu," he explained. "But my body can't handle it because of Kurama's chakra interfering. And now, thanks to that same chakra, my adamantine chains can't nullify other people's chakra either. It's one roadblock after another!"
Kushina's guilt deepened as she listened to his grievances. She had always prided herself on her resilience and strength, but hearing how her mistake had impacted Renjiro's ambitions made her feel like a failure.
She glanced at him hesitantly. "You wanted to learn Senjutsu? From whom?" she asked, her curiosity outweighing her hesitation.
"My summons," Renjiro replied simply.
Kushina's eyes lit up momentarily. "Ooh!" she said with genuine interest, though the excitement in her voice quickly faded as the weight of the conversation settled back over them.
After a few moments of silence, Renjiro tilted his head thoughtfully. "But why am I suffering because of Kurama's chakra in my body?" he asked. "Didn't Kinkaku and Ginkaku absorb some of Kurama's chakra and become stronger?"
Kushina inhaled deeply, bracing herself for the explanation. "Your case is different," she said, her voice measured.
"How so?" Renjiro pressed, his frustration evident in the sharpness of his tone.
"You have the adamantine chains," Kushina explained.
Renjiro raised an eyebrow. "And how is that supposed to change things?"
Kushina took a step closer, her hands gesturing as she spoke. "The adamantine chains and Kurama's chakra aren't compatible," she said. "Instead of coexisting, they're constantly at war with each other."
Renjiro's eyes widened as the realization hit him. "So my chains are too busy suppressing Kurama's chakra in me to function properly?" he asked, his voice tinged with disbelief.
"Exactly," Kushina nodded, her expression grim.
Renjiro sighed heavily, running both hands down his face. "Well, there goes another opportunity down the drain," he muttered bitterly. Still, a thought occurred to him. 'At least I have my green flames,' he mused, a small glimmer of hope piercing through his frustration.
He thought back to his recent battle with Matatabi's Jinchūriki, Tani. Combining his adamantine chains with his green flames had allowed him to harness an enormous amount of chakra. It wasn't the same as nullifying chakra outright, but it was an effective alternative as it still weakened his opponent, albeit slowly. He resolved to refine this technique further.
Kushina watched him carefully, sensing the wheels turning in his mind. After a moment, Renjiro asked, "But how is this different from your case? You're Kurama's Jinchūriki too, aren't you?"
Kushina's gaze softened, a wistful smile tugging at her lips. "It's not that different," she said. "While Kurama's chakra is inside me, he's still a separate entity. Using his chakra during your Magatama process made his chakra a part of you."
Renjiro's lips twitched upward in a rare moment of humour. "Does that make him my father?" he joked under his breath, though his tone lacked true levity.
Kushina chuckled softly, despite herself. "I suppose there are ways to correct this," Renjiro said after a beat, his expression turning serious again.
Kushina hesitated, her brows knitting together. "I'm not entirely sure," she admitted. "We could either try removing Kurama's chakra from you or... infuse more of his chakra into your body to balance the scales. But I'm not sure how to make that permanent."
Renjiro's face lit up at the first option. "We can remove it?" he asked eagerly, his silver eyes gleaming with hope.
The thought of removing Kurama's chakra opened a world of possibilities. He could finally learn Senjutsu, refine his adamantine chains, and explore paths that had been closed to him for so long. But his excitement was short-lived as Kushina raised a hand, her expression darkening.
"Don't get ahead of yourself," she said firmly. "Removing Kurama's chakra from your body could be fatal. It might even undo the Magatama process entirely. That means you'd lose your healing abilities, your chakra purification, and your chains."
The weight of her warning hit Renjiro like a punch to the gut. His excitement gave way to unease as he realized the gravity of what she was saying.
"And what about infusing more of Kurama's chakra?" he asked tentatively.
Kushina's expression softened, but there was a deep sadness in her eyes. "If we do that, I'll bear the cost," she said quietly.
Renjiro frowned. "What do you mean?"
"My life is tied to Kurama's," she explained. "Infusing more of his chakra into you would drain my life force."
Renjiro's stomach twisted at her words. "Kushina..." he began, but she cut him off with a gentle smile.
"I'm ready to do whatever it takes to make this right," she said, her voice steady despite the pain in her eyes. "Even if it costs me part of my life, I'll do it. You didn't ask for this, Renjiro. It's my responsibility to fix it."
Her words hung in the air, heavy with unspoken emotion. Renjiro looked at Kushina, his teacher, his friend, and saw not just her guilt but her unwavering resolve.
"We'll figure this out together," he said finally, his voice firm. "But I'm not letting you sacrifice yourself for me."
