Chapter 354: 353-Are you Insane?
The golden light of late afternoon filled the room, the dust motes swirling lazily in the sunbeams streaming through the windows. Kushina Uzumaki sat at her study desk, a faint smile playing on her lips as she analyzed the intricate seal patterns before her.
The scrolls Renjiro had created were meticulously crafted, their lines precise and their formulas elegant. She could see the depth of thought and care that had gone into the work, and it made her heart swell with a mixture of pride and admiration. Renjiro had always been serious about his training, but this—this was exceptional.
She leaned forward, her fingers tracing the seal's curves as if they could reveal its secrets to her. "This is really impressive," she murmured, her voice soft but laced with approval. Glancing up briefly at Renjiro, she continued speaking, her tone a little louder. "Honestly, Renjiro, you've outdone yourself here. The way you've integrated your jutsu-shiki into the core matrix—it's seamless. You're definitely ready to apply for the certification test to become a master fuinjutsu expert."
Kushina leaned back in her chair, the faint creak of the wood breaking the silence as she gave Renjiro a proud smile. "That's a step below grandmaster, you know. Not everyone gets this far. If you pass the test—and I'm sure you will—it'll be official."
As already mentioned before, there were five ranks for Fuinjutsu experts in the shinobi world. They were Basic, Intermediate, Advanced, Master and Grandmaster.
'He is also now able to learn how to make seals with his blood. Before I thought that it wouldn't be possible for him to learn it considering he's half Uzumaki. But with his healing chakra seinou, his life force should be enough.'
Kushina could still remember how Renjiro used to pester her to teach him the technique, but she stood her ground since learning the technique before his body could handle it, could lead to death.
Kushina expected Renjiro to react to this news, perhaps a sheepish smile or even a boastful remark, but he sat silent. Across the room, Renjiro rested his chin on his hand, his gaze fixed on the window. The light of his eyes seemed distant, lost in thought, as though they were reflecting not the world outside but a landscape far more complex within his mind. The sight made her frown.
"Oi, Renjiro!" she called, waving a hand in front of his face. "Are you even listening to me?"
He blinked, snapping back to the present with a start. For a moment, he looked as though he wanted to respond, but hesitation lingered in his expression. Finally, his voice broke the silence, soft yet carrying a weight she couldn't ignore. "How do you use your chains?"
Kushina tilted her head, the crimson waves of her hair shifting like a curtain. "Huh? My chains? What do you mean?" she asked, her tone laced with both confusion and curiosity.
Renjiro turned to face her fully, his posture shifting as he leaned forward. The usual composure in his eyes was replaced with something far more vulnerable, tinged with an uncharacteristic urgency. "Your chains give you an advantage against the Nine-Tails, right?"
Her brow furrowed as she considered his words. "Well, yeah. Of course, they do. They're a unique Uzumaki chakra seinou. But why are you suddenly asking about this?"
His hand ran through his hair, a nervous gesture that betrayed his inner turmoil. "Is there a specific way you use them to keep the Nine-Tails in check? Some kind of technique or... I don't know, a special method?"
Renjiro looked down at his hands, thinking 'I told Hiruzen that my chains were an advantage, but they weren't. I need to figure out what I'm doing wrong.'
Kushina leaned back, her sharp mind racing to piece together the meaning behind his inquiry. She knew Renjiro well enough to recognize that his questions were never random; they always stemmed from something deeper. But this? This was different. "Renjiro, what's this about? You've never asked about my chains before."
He exhaled sharply, his shoulders slumping as though the weight of his thoughts pressed down on him. His silver eyes darkened slightly, clouded with a mix of frustration and self-doubt. "I fought the Two-Tails jinchūriki during an ANBU mission," he admitted, his voice heavy with the gravity of his confession.
Kushina froze, her violet eyes wide with shock. The air seemed to grow thicker, the silence that followed his words deafening. "You what?" she nearly shouted, her voice sharp enough to cut through the room's stillness.
Renjiro's gaze didn't waver. "It wasn't planned. She was a new jinchūriki, still adapting to her powers. I thought my chains would give me an advantage against her—or at least against the tailed beast inside her—but they didn't."
The weight of his revelation settled over her like a storm cloud. Kushina's fists clenched on the table, her knuckles turning white as she tried to keep her temper in check. "You fought a jinchūriki? Are you insane?" she demanded, her voice rising with each word. "Do you have any idea how reckless that was?"
Renjiro raised his hands in a placating gesture, his tone calm but firm. "It wasn't as bad as it sounds—"
"It doesn't matter how bad it was!" she snapped, cutting him off. "You could've been killed! Or worse, you could've sparked a war! Do you ever think before you act?"
The room seemed to vibrate with the intensity of her anger, but Renjiro didn't flinch. His gaze remained steady, his voice unwavering. "I escaped," he said simply. "I'm here, aren't I? And I know what I need to work on now. That's why I'm asking for your help."
Kushina let out a heavy sigh, rubbing her temples as she paced the room. Her fiery anger cooled slightly, though the embers of her frustration still smoldered. "You're lucky you're still alive, baka. Seriously, what were you thinking?"
A faint, self-deprecating smile tugged at the corners of his lips. "I was thinking that I could handle it. I guess I was wrong."
She muttered something under her breath about reckless Uzumakis as she came to a stop in front of him. Crossing her arms, she fixed him with a stern glare. "Alright, fine. Show me your chains."
Renjiro nodded and held out his hands. Chakra pulsed from his palms, forming into sleek, glimmering chains of silver that extended outward. They shimmered in the fading sunlight, their metallic sheen catching the light with an almost ethereal beauty. The chains moved with a strange grace, their fluid motion belying their inherent strength.
Kushina stepped closer, her keen eyes narrowing as she studied them intently. Her fingers brushed against one of the links, and a faint hum of chakra resonated at her touch. The chains seemed to respond to her presence, shifting slightly as though acknowledging her scrutiny.
For several long moments, the room was silent save for the faint clinking of the chains. Kushina's expression grew thoughtful, her sharp mind analyzing every detail. Finally, she stepped back, crossing her arms over her chest.
Renjiro let the chains dissipate, the silver energy retreating back into his hands. He watched her expectantly, his earlier urgency replaced with a quiet patience. "Well?" he asked, his tone steady but tinged with hope.
Kushina's lips curved into a small, knowing smile, her violet eyes gleaming with a mix of pride and amusement. "Ah, I see now. I know why your chains can't nullify chakra."
Renjiro leaned forward, his curiosity piqued. "What do you mean?"
