Chapter 27: Softie Obito
In the Konoha Forest, near the training grounds, three Genin—Obito, Rin, and Kakashi—sat on a fallen log, waiting impatiently.
"Rin, we've been waiting for an hour already! That idiot still isn't here!" Obito grumbled, crossing his arms.
Rin puffed out her cheeks. "Yeah, he's really unreliable!"
Kakashi glanced at Obito, unimpressed. "You calling someone else unreliable? You're late every day."
"What did you say, Kakashi?!" Obito snapped, glaring at him.
Before the argument could escalate, a calm voice interrupted, "Oh, looks like you're all fired up today."
The three turned to see their teacher, Yoruichi, approaching with a wide grin.
"Yoruichi-sensei!" Obito stammered, suddenly nervous.
"Well, since you're so energetic, let's get started," Yoruichi said casually, gesturing toward the training grounds.
---
At the training field, Yoruichi stood before his team, explaining the rules. "The task is simple. Take these bells from me. Whoever fails won't get lunch."
"What?!" Obito cried, already dreading the outcome.
"You have two hours. Start… now!" Yoruichi declared.
Before his words fully settled, Kakashi threw a kunai straight at him. The blade zipped through the air with precision, but Yoruichi caught it effortlessly with two fingers.
"Not bad," Yoruichi said, grinning.
Kakashi vanished in an instant, reappearing behind Yoruichi, kunai ready to strike.
Obito froze in place, wide-eyed. "He's fast…"
Rin gasped softly, covering her mouth as she watched. But before Kakashi's kunai could land, Yoruichi was gone.
"Instantaneous Movement Technique?!" Kakashi exclaimed as he felt a strong hand grab his ankle. In one swift motion, Yoruichi flipped Kakashi upside down and hung him in the air.
"Nice attempt," Yoruichi said, sidestepping Kakashi's desperate grab for the bells. He spun and flung Kakashi into Obito, sending both tumbling to the ground.
"Teamwork, people," Yoruichi chided, shaking his head. "Right now, you're just entertaining me. What is a ninja? A lone warrior or part of a team?"
Rin stepped forward, her brow furrowed. "He's right. Kakashi, Obito, we have to work together."
Yoruichi smirked. "Finally, someone gets it. Good thinking, Rin."
Rin blushed slightly at the praise, while Kakashi dusted himself off silently. Obito frowned. "But there are only two bells! How can we all work together?"
"We'll share," Rin suggested. "If we win, we can split lunch."
"Smart girl," Yoruichi said approvingly.
---
For the next two hours, the three tried everything. Kakashi rushed in with calculated attacks, Obito fumbled through reckless charges, and Rin provided support. But Yoruichi danced around their attempts with ease, never breaking a sweat.
Obito slumped to the ground, panting heavily. "This isn't fair, Sensei! You're using only taijutsu, but it's impossible to touch you!"
Kakashi, knocked down once again, gritted his teeth. "You idiot! Don't you get it? Yoruichi-sensei isn't just anyone! He's from the Uzumaki clan! They specialize in sealing techniques and immense chakra. And you're saying he's just skilled in taijutsu?"
Obito froze, his jaw dropping. "Wait… Uzumaki? You mean like the First Hokage's wife?"
Yoruichi sighed, rubbing the back of his neck. "Kids these days sure love rumors. No, I'm not an Uzumaki. Just call me Yoruichi-sensei. That's all you need to know."
As Yoruichi spoke, Kakashi tried a final sneak attack with a shadow clone. But before the clone could touch the bells, Yoruichi had it pinned to the ground, dispersing it with ease.
"Not bad, Kakashi," Yoruichi said with a smirk, letting him up. "You're learning. But remember, a true ninja wins as part of a team. Strength alone won't save you."
He gestured toward Rin and Obito. "A team is like a chain. If one link is weak, the whole chain breaks."
Suddenly, roots burst from the ground, ensnaring Obito. The boy yelped in surprise as Yoruichi dragged him closer. Flicking Obito's forehead, Yoruichi said, "See? A weak link can cost the whole team."
Rin gasped, while Kakashi's eyes narrowed. "We should've seen that coming…"
Obito, embarrassed, grumbled, "Sensei, you cheated! You said no ninjutsu!"
Yoruichi chuckled. "There's no such thing as 'fair' on the battlefield, Obito. The enemy won't wait for you to be ready. If you don't want to be a liability, train harder. Stop dreaming about glory and start working for it."
Obito lowered his head, shamefaced. Yoruichi's words struck a nerve.
"War isn't some distant concept," Yoruichi said, his tone serious. "It's coming. And it's far crueler than you think. Train harder, or you won't just fail—you'll die. And worse, you'll drag your teammates down with you."
Obito's lip quivered, and, to everyone's surprise, tears began to spill.
Yoruichi blinked, then scratched his head awkwardly. "Wait, are you… crying? Man, I didn't mean to make you cry…"
