Naruto: Maelstrom Of The Uzumaki

Chapter 75: Chapter 75: Separately!

"As long as you take your own life, I'll let her go. So, what will it be—your life or hers?"

The middle-aged man bent down as he spoke, pressing a kunai against Konan's neck. His twisted smile bore into Yahiko, taunting him with cruel satisfaction.

"Damn it! How did it come to this?"

Yahiko was paralyzed with indecision. The middle-aged man had appeared out of nowhere, obliterating Uzumaki Raiden's shadow clone with a single blow before targeting Yahiko. Konan, inexplicably in the vicinity, had attempted to help, but her thrown kunai had only diverted the man's attention. Now, she was held hostage, the knife against her throat threatening her life.

"Yahiko, don't! Run and get Jiraiya-sensei!"

Konan's frantic shout seemed to infuriate the man. He raised his right hand, the kunai poised to plunge into her.

"No! I'll do whatever you say! Just don't hurt her!"

Yahiko's desperate voice broke through the tension, his hands trembling as he pleaded.

"Is that so?" The man smirked maliciously, lowering the kunai slightly. "Then go ahead and do it."

Yahiko, his body shaking, picked up a kunai from the ground. With trembling hands, he pointed it at his own throat. His mind raced, but his resolve faltered. After a long moment of hesitation, he finally gritted his teeth and made his decision.

Just as the kunai was about to pierce his throat, the middle-aged man vanished, reappearing in front of Yahiko and seizing his wrist. The blade stopped mere millimeters from its mark.

"What…?" Yahiko's eyes widened in confusion.

"You idiot!"

The man snarled before landing a powerful punch on Yahiko's face, sending him flying several meters. Yahiko's lips split against his teeth, blood trickling down his chin as he collapsed onto the wet ground.

As Yahiko struggled to lift his head, he realized the middle-aged man was no longer there. In his place stood Uzumaki Raiden, his crimson hair clinging to his face in the rain. The hostage situation, the attack, Konan's distress—it had all been a ruse.

"It was fake?" Yahiko whispered, a mix of relief and disbelief spreading across his face. "Haha, that's… great!"

"Great?" Raiden's voice was cold and sharp. He strode over, grabbing Yahiko by the collar and hurling him against a tree.

"Do you even realize what you've done? Do you understand the consequences of your choice?"

Yahiko gasped, his body wracked with pain as Raiden loomed over him.

"To willingly submit to the enemy's demands… Do you think that's what being a ninja is about?" Raiden's voice cut like a blade, unrelenting.

"I… I just wanted to protect Konan," Yahiko murmured weakly.

"Protect her?!" Raiden snapped. "If you had gone through with it, do you really believe the enemy would have let her live? Threatening your life with a companion's safety—do you think their intent is ever honorable? Do you think surrendering would have saved anyone?"

Yahiko was silent, shame settling over him like a heavy cloak.

"On the path of a ninja, your companions might fall. You might fall. It's the cruel reality of this world," Raiden continued. "But the moment you give in, the moment you lose the will to resist, you ensure the enemy's victory."

Raiden's words hung in the air, harsh yet searingly honest.

"Engrave this lesson into your mind, Yahiko: never yield. Resist, no matter how dire the situation. Always resist."

With that, Raiden vanished in a puff of smoke, leaving Yahiko alone to reflect on his actions.

Back at the wooden house, Raiden was seated with Nagato, guiding him through chakra control exercises. Suddenly, he paused, his gaze drifting toward the forest.

"That kid needs to learn resilience," Raiden murmured to himself. He processed the memories returned from his shadow clone and sighed. "This is only a temporary fix, not a true solution."

Raiden knew the root of the problem lay with Uchiha Madara, who had planted the Rinnegan in Nagato. Madara's influence loomed over Nagato's fate like a shadow. To truly change the course of events, Madara needed to be eliminated.

But Raiden was realistic. He wasn't strong enough to face Madara, let alone defeat him. Instead, he focused on disrupting Madara's plans in smaller ways.

"Yahiko is the key," Raiden thought. "As long as he stays strong, Nagato won't stray. His influence will keep Nagato on the right path."

That evening, Uchiha Fugaku and Hiashi returned from their mission to gather intelligence. Both were covered in mud, and their grim expressions hinted at the weight of their findings. Konan and Yahiko, also dirtied from training, returned with Raiden's shadow clone in tow.

Jiraiya, engrossed in writing, hadn't returned yet.

"How was the town?" Raiden asked as he packed away the scrolls from Nagato's practice.

Fugaku smirked but quickly composed himself. "We weren't there to play. We were gathering intel."

"And what did you find?" Raiden pressed.

Minato leaned forward, his tone serious. "We observed an unusual number of merchants from the Land of Wind in town. That's not normal for a small place like this."

"Merchants? From the Land of Wind? Did you confirm their intentions?"

Hiashi nodded. "We tracked them discreetly. They seem to be genuine traders for now, but it's suspicious."

Raiden frowned. "Report it anyway. This could be a prelude to something bigger."

Later that night, as everyone settled in for dinner, Jiraiya finally returned, his notebook under his arm. Minato recounted their observations, and Jiraiya's expression darkened.

"If this is true, then the fragile peace we've established might soon shatter," he said grimly.

His words cast a heavy silence over the group. Everyone understood the implications.

"If the Land of Wind intervenes, it could shift the balance," Jiraiya continued. "Their strategy would likely target us while we're already strained from conflicts with the Land of Earth and the Land of Lightning. It's a logical move."

The atmosphere grew tense, each person lost in their thoughts.

"Don't dwell on it tonight," Raiden finally said, breaking the silence. "Let's eat and rest. We'll face whatever comes in the morning."

As the rain continued to fall, the group finished their meal in relative silence, the weight of looming conflict heavy on their minds.

The next morning, Raiden awoke to the sound of footsteps. He saw Fugaku, Hiashi, and Minato quietly leaving the house.

"What are they up to so early?" Raiden wondered aloud, heading for the door.

Before he could step out, Jiraiya's voice stopped him.

"They've got a separate mission. Stay here," Jiraiya said calmly, not bothering to look up from his notebook.

Raiden paused, realizing the truth. "I was never part of their team. The Hokage's real intention was to send me here, wasn't it?"

Jiraiya's silence confirmed his suspicion.

Raiden sighed. "Fine. I'll make the most of it."

Grabbing his blade, Sakegari no Tachi, Raiden stepped outside, ready to clear his head in the rain.
