Chapter 9: Under the Starry Sky
Naruto closed the door to his apartment behind him and let out a deep sigh. The day had been exhausting, filled with training and heavy thoughts. Still, tonight he had promised himself to make an effort. Heading to his closet, he grabbed a more casual outfit and got ready to head out. As he adjusted his forehead protector, a faint noise at his window caught his attention.
Turning around, he saw Ino crouched on the windowsill, wearing a sly grin. She tapped lightly on the glass, her face illuminated by the pale glow of the moon.
"Open up, lazybones," she teased with a laugh.
Naruto opened the window, raising an eyebrow.
"You could've just waited downstairs like a normal person, you know?"
Ino shrugged.
"Normal is boring. Besides, I came to make sure you weren't chickening out."
Naruto grimaced, trying to hide a smirk.
"I'm ready, no need to babysit me."
"Good. In that case, let's go," she said, leaping lightly down to the balcony.
As they left the apartment, Naruto noticed that Ino seemed unusually cheerful.
"You're in a good mood," he remarked.
"Maybe I'm just excited to see Naruto Uzumaki finally relaxing for once," she replied with a wink.
The streets of Konoha were bathed in a soft light. Hanging lanterns swayed gently in the breeze, casting a warm glow on the cobblestone paths. The stalls were bustling with life: vendors called out their offers, families strolled by, and the mouthwatering scent of ramen and skewers filled the air.
Naruto, hands behind his head, glanced around absentmindedly. Ino quickly broke the silence.
"So, have you heard the news?" she asked mischievously.
"What news?" he asked, giving her a curious look.
"Apparently, a new member is joining Team 7. Sort of a replacement for Sasuke."
Naruto's smile vanished instantly.
"No one could ever replace Sasuke," he muttered darkly.
Ino crossed her arms, looking slightly annoyed.
"It's not a replacement, Naruto. You guys need backup. Even you can't do everything alone."
He stayed silent, staring straight ahead. His clenched jaw betrayed his inner turmoil.
"And what about Sasuke?" he finally said. "He's still our priority. I won't give up on him."
Ino sighed softly.
"Still as stubborn as ever... But that's one of the reasons we like you."
They eventually reached their destination: a small clearing adorned with string lights hanging from tree branches. Tables were piled with food, and the laughter of other ninjas echoed through the night.
Choji, true to form, was buried in a mountain of chips and skewers. Kiba was laughing boisterously while playing with Akamaru, occasionally bickering with a visibly annoyed Shikamaru. Tenten was chatting with Neji, while Sakura sat off to the side, observing the scene pensively.
"Kiba, calm down, or you'll scare off the guests!" Shikamaru said with an eye roll.
When Naruto arrived, Kiba greeted him enthusiastically.
"Naruto! Finally decided to join us, huh?"
Naruto shrugged with a smile.
"Yeah, you could say that."
Choji, ever generous, handed him a skewer.
"Here, you must be starving after all that training."
Naruto accepted it gratefully. However, he could feel Sakura's gaze on him. When he sat next to Ino, he noticed her slightly raised eyebrow but chose to ignore it.
The conversation quickly turned to Sasuke, casting a shadow over the evening.
"I say we need to find him," Sakura declared, her tone filled with frustration. "Not replace him with some random person. His thirst for power drives me crazy, but…"
"He has his reasons," Kiba interjected, unusually serious.
Neji, who had been silent until now, spoke up.
"Pain often shapes a man's actions. He believes revenge is his only path."
Naruto clenched his fists.
"Whatever his reasons, Sasuke is our friend. And I won't abandon him."
The discussions grew heated for a while, with everyone voicing their opinions passionately. Eventually, as the hours passed, the party wound down, and the shinobi began to disperse.
Naruto left the clearing ahead of Ino, seeking solitude under the starry sky. He climbed the steps of a building and sat on the rooftop, his eyes fixed on the constellations.
"Planning to stay here all night?"
He startled and turned to see Ino climbing up effortlessly. She sat beside him, her expression soft.
"I was thinking," he said simply.
"About Sasuke?"
Naruto nodded.
"Sometimes, I wonder if I'm doing everything I can to bring him back."
She placed a comforting hand on his shoulder.
"No one doubts you, Naruto. You might be the only one who still believes in him, but that's what will make the difference."
Naruto looked at her, a slight smile forming on his lips.
"You think so?"
"I'm sure of it," she said with conviction.
A moment of silence passed. Ino finally stood up and held out a hand to him.
"Come on, get down from here. Thinking is fine, but there's no point in staying up here all night."
Naruto took her hand and stood.
"Thanks, Ino. It helps to talk."
"Don't mention it. And next time, it's your turn to listen to me."
They left the rooftop together, walking side by side under the starry sky.

In a quiet street of Konoha, Jiraiya strolled with his hands in his pockets, observing the flickering lantern lights. Even at this late hour, the village pulsed with a tranquil energy, punctuated by distant laughter and the soft murmur of the wind through the trees.
He suddenly stopped as he noticed a familiar silhouette. Tsunade was walking slowly, her head slightly bowed, clearly lost in thought.
A smile spread across the Sannin's face. "It's rare to see her alone at this hour." He approached her, his casual demeanor masking a hint of curiosity.
"Well, who would've thought to run into the legendary Tsunade-hime without her entourage or her imperious air?" he teased, a mischievous glint in his eyes.
Tsunade lifted her head, surprised to see him, though her face remained serious.
"Jiraiya... What are you doing here?"
"Me? Just enjoying the night. And you? You look like you're carrying the weight of the world on your shoulders," he replied, his tone playful but his gaze observant.
Tsunade averted her eyes.
"Nothing that concerns you."
Jiraiya wasn't one to be easily deterred.
"You know what? A night like this deserves to be celebrated. Come have a drink with me."
"Not interested," she retorted immediately.
But he persisted, his tone light as he stepped into her path.
"Come on, just one drink. You wouldn't leave me to drink alone, would you?"
Tsunade sighed, crossing her arms.
"You're insufferable, you know that?"
"Yep, but that's why everyone loves me," he replied with a wink.
Finally, she relented.
"One drink, Jiraiya. And don't even think about trying to make me stay longer."
They ended up in a small, discreet tavern, a place Jiraiya frequented often. The atmosphere was intimate, with dim lighting and sake flowing freely.
The conversation, light at first, gradually turned to more personal topics. Jiraiya listened as Tsunade spoke about the crushing responsibilities of being Hokage, her doubts, and her fears. He responded with jokes but also with sincere words, occasionally weaving in nostalgic memories of their past adventures.
Despite her initial reluctance, Tsunade began to relax, and as the sake flowed, a genuine smile appeared on her face. Eventually, after several drinks, she even burst out laughing at one of Jiraiya's exaggerated stories.
When she became visibly drunk, Jiraiya stood up and helped her to her feet.
"Well, it's time for you to head home," he declared softly, supporting her by the arm.
"Hmph... I can walk home on my own," she muttered.
"Not a chance. I wouldn't want the great Hokage stumbling along the way," he replied with a tender smile.
The walk to Tsunade's residence was quiet, punctuated by her tired grumbles and occasional chuckles. When they arrived, Jiraiya stopped at her door.
"Thank you…" she murmured before disappearing inside.
Jiraiya lingered for a moment, his smile turning melancholic, before turning toward the starry night and walking away, alone.
