Chapter 22: Welcome to Reality
Naruto left the table, his determined footsteps echoing through the small house. Ayame might have just questioned his abilities, but he wasn't about to let that affront slide. Anger and a hint of pride fueled his resolve. He stepped through the door and headed to the garden, where Ayame stood, arms crossed, her gaze fixed on the horizon.
Akane, returning from her room and now seated in a chair, observed the scene through the window with an amused smile. "That idiot's going to get himself into trouble... but at least he brings some life to this place," she murmured to herself, stretching before propping her feet up on the table.
Naruto stopped a few steps away from Ayame and declared without hesitation:
"I challenge you to a duel."
Ayame slowly turned toward him, her golden eyes sparkling with disbelief.
"What? Are you serious?"
"Completely serious," Naruto replied, his fists clenched.
She sighed, visibly annoyed.
"Stop acting like a child."
Naruto, irritated, cut her off before she could finish her sentence:
"You called me weak earlier, didn't you? And now you're backing down? Who's the child here?"
Naruto's words seemed to hit her like a direct blow. She stood still for a moment before closing her eyes and taking a deep breath. Then, she nodded, accepting the challenge.
"Fine," she said, getting into position. "But don't come crying later."
Naruto smirked, confident he'd already won the first round. He drew a kunai, stepping into the improvised ring formed by the garden's flowers.
The duel began in tense silence. Naruto was the first to charge, kunai in hand. Ayame, as agile as a cat, dodged fluidly, pivoting to the side before countering with a quick strike of her own kunai.
The blades clashed, ringing out a metallic sound that resonated in the cool morning air. Using the momentum of the attack, Naruto leaped back and quickly formed hand signs.
"Shadow Clone Jutsu!"
Three clones appeared in a puff of smoke, surrounding Ayame. She didn't seem impressed.
"Predictable tactic," she murmured, dashing toward the nearest clone and dispersing it with a precise strike.
But Naruto had anticipated her move. Exploiting the opening created by the clone, he attacked head-on with a direct kunai strike. Ayame blocked just in time, their blades clashing once more.
The battle continued, with Naruto's clones attempting to overwhelm Ayame, who methodically dispelled them. Despite her composure, Naruto maintained the pressure, using his speed and improvised strategies to keep her on the defensive.
"What's wrong?" Naruto taunted with a sly grin as Ayame parried another attack. "Can't keep up? I thought you were stronger than this."
Ayame remained silent, though her eyebrows furrowed slightly.
Encouraged by what he saw as a sign of weakness, Naruto intensified his attacks. He used a combination of clones to try and throw her off balance, followed by a swift feint with his kunai. For a moment, it seemed like he was gaining the upper hand.
However, Ayame's patience finally wore thin. She leapt back, breaking the engagement, and fixed Naruto with an icy stare.
"Alright," she said in a cold voice. "If you want a real fight, I'll show you why you're weak."
A shiver ran down Naruto's spine.
Ayame charged with blinding speed. Naruto barely had time to raise his kunai to block, but the impact sent him stumbling back several steps. She immediately followed up with a low sweep at his legs, forcing him to jump to avoid being taken down.
This time, she wasn't merely defending herself. Her attacks were precise and relentless, pushing Naruto onto the back foot. Every move seemed calculated, every strike exposed a flaw in his defense.
"You're too loud in your attacks," she said, dodging another kunai thrown by a clone. "You telegraph your intentions before you even move."
Naruto grunted, struggling to keep up.
"And look at you," she continued, her voice tinged with disdain. "You act like a hero, but all you're doing is running from your own insecurities. You're so obsessed with proving your worth that you forget to think."
Her words pierced Naruto like needles.
Ayame leapt into the air, executing a spinning kick that dispersed one of his clones before striking Naruto directly. He rolled across the ground, groaning in pain, but quickly got back to his feet.
"And this arrogance," she added, her tone growing harsher. "You mock others, but you can't handle the slightest criticism. You're a hypocrite, Naruto Uzumaki."
Out of breath and fuming, Naruto made one last desperate charge. But Ayame, with disarming ease, disarmed him with a swift move before pinning him to the ground, her kunai pointed at his throat.
"The fight is over," she said coldly.
Naruto lay still, breathing heavily, his eyes locked on hers. Ayame stepped back, sheathing her kunai before turning her back to him.
"If you want to get stronger," she said without looking back, "learn to listen. And above all, learn to know yourself."
Naruto remained on the ground, his fists clenched. Her words echoed in his mind. She was right, and he knew it.
Ayame walked away without another word, leaving Naruto alone in the garden, surrounded by trampled flowers and a heavy silence.
From afar, Akane watched the scene with a mysterious smile.
"Maybe he still has a chance, after all," she murmured before returning to her tasks.
Lying on the ground, Naruto stared at the sky. This duel hadn't just been a physical fight. It was a brutal reminder of his weaknesses and what he needed to overcome. And despite the pain, he felt a strange flame ignite within him—a flame of determination.
