Chapter 2: Between Hope and Rejection
"Sa… Sakura," Naruto stammered nervously, a hesitant smile on his face as he struggled to find the right words. "It's been a while and…"
"Spit it out already!" she cut him off, sounding slightly annoyed. "I don't have time for this; Lady Tsunade is waiting for me."
Naruto took a step back, laughing nervously. "Ah, right… Of course. Actually, I just wanted to ask if… you'd be free tonight?"
Sakura raised an eyebrow, staring at him. "For what?"
"Uh… just to grab a bowl of ramen at Ichiraku and chat. That's all!" He clasped his hands together as if begging for mercy.
She sighed, crossing her arms. "Fine, but don't be late. I'm warning you, if you waste my time…"
"Thank you, Sakura-chan! You'll see, it'll be quick!" he replied quickly.
Without saying another word, she turned on her heels, leaving Naruto standing there, grinning like a fool.
"I think that's a yes!" he thought, lightly slapping his cheeks to stay focused.
Sakura disappeared into the crowd, leaving Naruto alone in the bustling street. He sighed, running a hand through his messy hair.
"This is hopeless. I'm really terrible at this kind of thing… She probably thinks I'm an idiot," he thought.
Still, a small glimmer of hope lingered. She had agreed to see him later. It was a start. A sheepish smile spread across his face as he resumed walking.
"Alright, focus, Naruto. Now all I have to do is confess my feelings…" Lost in thought, he wandered through the lively streets of Konoha.
The sun, already at its zenith, cast its rays over rooftops adorned with red tiles and wooden panels engraved with family emblems, reflecting the vibrant soul of the Hidden Leaf Village.
Everything suddenly seemed… gentler. The shopkeepers appeared more cheerful and welcoming, calling out to villagers while promoting their goods. Children ran around laughing, playing ninja as they mimicked their heroes.
"I wonder what our kids would look like?" he mused, his gaze following the children.
It was as if he was seeing the village for the first time. Maybe there was some truth to the idea that love makes men foolish…
"Naruto, what are you still doing here?" The familiar voice of Tenten snapped him out of his thoughts. "We're waiting for you for the mission, and you're just wandering around?"
"I was thinking about… important things," he replied with a nervous smile. "And I was just on my way."
She rolled her eyes. "Pfft, important things… Like what?"
"Well…" he began, searching for an excuse. But before he could answer, Tenten cut him off.
"Forget it. Let's go; we're already late enough as it is."
The two headed to the village gates, where the rest of the team had been waiting for quite some time.
Rock Lee was leaping through the air with his boundless energy, while Might Guy, as flamboyant as ever, watched his student with pride.
"Lee! You are the embodiment of youth! Show me that triple-spin jump again!"
"Yes, Gai-sensei!" Lee shouted before launching himself with blazing determination.
Not far away, Neji sat cross-legged, observing the scene with a patience that thinly veiled his irritation.
"They should've been here twenty minutes ago…" he muttered to himself, arms crossed and eyes fixed on the path ahead.
Suddenly, hurried footsteps broke the calm. Naruto and Tenten appeared on the horizon, out of breath. As usual, Naruto wore an awkward smile, while Tenten tried to maintain some semblance of dignity.
"Sorry we're late!" Naruto called, scratching the back of his head.
"He… he was just standing there watching some kids…" Tenten added with a sigh, pointing at Naruto.
Neji stood up, his Byakugan briefly activating as he shot them a piercing look.
"You're ninjas, not civilians. Discipline is essential. This kind of behavior is unacceptable."
"Oh, lighten up, Neji! We're here now, aren't we?" Naruto retorted, crossing his arms.
Tenten, visibly annoyed, chimed in: "Neji's right, Naruto. We really should be more serious…"
Before the argument could escalate, Gai intervened, raising a hand dramatically.
"Enough! My dear students, the time has come for an exhilarating mission, and I will not allow petty quarrels to dim the flame of youth!"
They all gathered around their sensei, who pulled a scroll from his pocket.
"Our mission is simple yet critical: escort a medicine merchant to a neighboring village. There have been reports of recent bandit ambushes, and we must ensure his safety."
"Bandits?" Naruto exclaimed. "Easy! We'll crush them in no time!"
Neji sighed, but Gai, ever the optimist, smiled.
"Naruto, that confidence is a joy to hear! But remember, even the simplest missions can hold surprises."
[...]
The team moved along a peaceful forest trail, the merchant walking cautiously in the middle of the group. Neji led the way, his Byakugan activated to detect any potential threats. Lee and Gai were enthusiastically discussing new training techniques, while Naruto and Tenten exchanged anecdotes, creating a relaxed atmosphere.
Neji suddenly stopped as they approached a bridge spanning a river.
"Four chakra signatures. Ambush, ten meters ahead."
Gai nodded. "Understood. Defensive formation. Naruto, Lee, Tenten, deal with them. Neji, protect the merchant."
Without delay, four masked figures emerged from the trees, kunai in hand. One of them threw a volley of shuriken as a warning.
"Hand over your goods, and maybe we'll let you live!" one of the bandits growled.
Naruto smirked. "That's it? You picked the wrong group to mess with!"
Creating two clones, he charged at one of the bandits. His clones distracted the enemy while he executed a direct attack, skillfully dodging counterstrikes. With a spinning kick, he disarmed his opponent.
Meanwhile, Lee engaged two bandits simultaneously, his swift and precise movements leaving no room for retaliation. "Gai-sensei, watch my ultimate technique!" he shouted, delivering a flying kick that sent his targets sprawling.
Tenten, positioned at a vantage point, unleashed a barrage of kunai, pinning another bandit in place. The weapons landed with precision, cutting off all escape routes.
The last bandit tried to flee, but Neji appeared before him, his Byakugan glowing with intensity.
"You're not going anywhere." In a flash, he struck several vital points, effortlessly incapacitating the enemy.
Within five minutes, the bandits were subdued, securely tied up by the team.
The merchant, clearly impressed, bowed respectfully.
"Thank you. You've saved my life. You're truly extraordinary ninjas."
"It's all in a day's work, sir! Protecting people is what we do!" Naruto replied, puffing out his chest with pride.
Neji, ever composed, gave a slight nod.
Gai burst into laughter. "This is the kind of teamwork I love to see! You've all proven that youth can overcome any obstacle!"
With the mission complete, Naruto returned home, a mix of excitement and nervousness bubbling inside him.
The dusk painted the sky in shades of orange, and the Hidden Leaf Village basked in a serene tranquility. After a quick bath and carefully chosen attire—his usual outfit, but freshly pressed—Naruto stood before the mirror, taking a deep breath.
"This is it, Naruto! You've got this. Stay cool and don't mess it up!" he muttered, adjusting his forehead protector.
Arriving at Sakura's house, his heart pounded. She stepped out shortly after, her expression neutral. Her pink hair glistened in the fading light, framing her delicate features. Naruto felt his throat tighten.
"Hi, Sakura-chan! You look amazing tonight."
"Yeah. So, what brings you here?" she replied, almost distracted.
"Uh… well… I thought we were going to Ichiraku for ramen… you didn't forget, did you?"
She raised an eyebrow but eventually nodded.
"Alright, but let's not waste time. I've got other things to do afterward."
They walked together, Naruto awkwardly trying to spark conversations about the day's battle, training, and random stories about Jiraiya.
Sakura, true to form, was curt at times and seemed distant, responding mechanically while her eyes roamed the lively streets around them.
At Ichiraku, Naruto ordered his favorite ramen, trying to mask his nervousness. Sakura, after a few bites, set her bowl down on the counter and looked at him.
"So, Naruto, what did you want to tell me? I don't have all night."
Naruto took a deep breath, his fists clenched under the table. "Come on, you can do it. It's now or never," he told himself.
His eyes met Sakura's. For a moment, he thought he saw a flicker of impatience, but he refused to let it intimidate him.
"Sakura-chan… I wanted to tell you that… I've always loved you."
The silence that followed was almost deafening, as if the world had stopped around them.
