Chapter 13: On the Road to Suna
The scorching afternoon sun bathed the rocky lands between Konoha and Suna. Naruto, Sakura, and Kakashi moved at a brisk pace, driven by the urgency of their mission. Gaara, the Kazekage, had been kidnapped by the Akatsuki, and every minute mattered. The atmosphere was tense, but Naruto was doing his best to maintain his energy.
As they reached a crossroads along the path, a familiar silhouette emerged in the distance. Temari, with her giant fan strapped to her back, was walking quickly toward Suna. Spotting the team, she waved and quickened her pace.
"Naruto, Sakura, Kakashi! What are you doing here?" she asked as she approached them, visibly surprised.
"We're on a mission to save Gaara!" Naruto responded enthusiastically, though his tone betrayed a hint of worry.
Temari nodded, her expression serious. "I was heading back for the same reason. Suna's council summoned me as soon as the news broke. I'm glad I won't be facing this alone."
A heavy silence followed, broken only by the sound of their footsteps—a constant reminder of the urgency of their mission.
Temari led the group, her massive fan secured on her back, her face set in a grim expression. Naruto, usually so cheerful, also seemed uncharacteristically solemn.
As the group advanced, Temari broke the silence. "I can't stop thinking about what Gaara must be feeling right now… being in their hands… those monsters…" Her voice trembled slightly, a mix of anger and worry. "I know how much Gaara has suffered. Being a host is a burden few can understand. But today, he has friends and a village that accept him."
Naruto, walking beside her, turned his head slightly in her direction.
"I know what it feels like," he said softly, his voice unusually serious. Temari shot him a questioning glance. "What it's like to be treated like a monster. To be alone… constantly rejected."
Temari stopped abruptly. Sakura, startled, turned back as well. "What do you mean, Naruto?" Temari asked, her gaze locked onto the young ninja.
Naruto took a deep breath before answering. "I'm a host. Kurama, the Nine-Tailed Fox, is sealed inside me. Ever since I was a kid, people looked at me with fear and contempt. They treated me as if I were the fox itself. I was alone, just like Gaara. Maybe even worse because I smiled… but inside, I was empty."
Naruto's words fell like thunder. Temari brought a hand to her mouth, surprised, but her eyes quickly filled with a warmth she rarely showed. She seemed to search for the right words, but nothing came out. "I… I didn't know," she murmured. "That explains why you understand Gaara. You're closer to him than anyone."
Sakura, on the other hand, was stunned. She had known Naruto for so long but had never taken the time to understand his pain. Every smile he showed, every silly joke, every attempt to grab attention was actually a shield to mask deep suffering. She lowered her gaze, overwhelmed by a wave of guilt. Naruto, sensing her gaze, turned slightly toward her but quickly looked away, avoiding any interaction. That gesture tugged at Sakura's heart as she realized how blind she had been.
Temari placed a hand on Naruto's shoulder. "Gaara is lucky to have you as a friend. And maybe you're lucky to have him too. You understand each other in a way no one else could."
Naruto gave a faint smile. "Maybe. But it's not fair to live like this. No child should bear such a burden."
The group moved quickly, the silence broken only by the sound of their footsteps on the rocky path, each lost in their thoughts. The warm wind blew gently, kicking up clouds of dust around them. Suddenly, Naruto felt a shiver run down his spine. "Something's wrong," he said, glancing around. Kakashi, already on alert, scanned the surroundings. An unusual aura emanated from the shadows.
"Wait," Kakashi warned.
Before he could say more, a masked figure appeared on a rock overlooking the path. Dressed in a long, dark cloak, the figure's face was hidden behind a strange mask. A menacing aura surrounded them.
"Who are you?" Kakashi demanded, his voice sharp.
The figure didn't respond. Instead, they threw a small object to the ground. Before anyone could react, a thick cloud of purple gas spread around them.
"Fall back!" Kakashi shouted, but it was too late. Naruto, Temari, and Sakura were quickly enveloped by the gas. Naruto tried to hold his breath, but his legs soon gave way, and he collapsed. Temari reached for her fan but lost consciousness before she could open it. Sakura fell to her knees, struggling to stay awake, but eventually succumbed as well.
Kakashi, thanks to his training and exceptional chakra control, managed to remain standing. He fixed his Sharingan on the figure, searching for an opening to attack. "Who are you? What do you want?"
The figure didn't answer, calmly approaching Naruto. "Impressive," they finally said, their feminine voice echoing strangely in the silence. "You resisted longer than I expected. But it doesn't matter."
They bent down to grab Naruto, and Kakashi, mustering his remaining strength, lunged forward to intercept. However, before he could reach them, a powerful blow slammed him to the ground.
"You're resilient," the woman continued. "But it's pointless. This was all planned."
Kakashi tried to rise again, but his strength failed him. His Sharingan dimmed, and he slipped into unconsciousness, powerless to save his student.
The masked figure cast one last glance around before disappearing into the shadows with Naruto unconscious on her shoulder. Sakura, Temari, and Kakashi lay sprawled on the ground, unconscious, the surrounding rocks silent witnesses to the ambush.
Tension hung heavy in the air, and the shadow of a new threat loomed over them. Naruto and the team's fate now lay in the hands of destiny, as the Akatsuki seemed always one step ahead.
