Naruto: I Am Itachi Uchiha!

Chapter 9: Tagging Along On A Mission [1]

The sun shone brightly in the sky as Uchiha Itachi and Uchiha Shisui leaped through the forest, swiftly making their way toward their mission's location. Alongside them were two other figures—a man named Genji Shimada and a mysterious ANBU operative with flowing silver hair, a katana on his back, and a cat-shaped mask.

Shisui had received a special mission at the border between the Land of Fire and the Land of Wind—his first mission of such a caliber. Without his usual teammates or mentor, he had been assigned an ANBU and a few others to assist. When Itachi learned about the mission, he insisted on joining. Though Itachi hadn't mentioned it at home, there was no stopping him now; they were already on the second day of their journey.

"Alright, Kuroyuki, Genji, we're approaching the border," Shisui said as they moved. "Please scout the area ahead. Itachi and I will head directly to the mission site. We'll meet back at the hidden outpost in one hour."

"Understood," the ANBU operative known as Kuroyuki responded coldly, vanishing into the trees like a shadow. His icy demeanor left Itachi with the distinct impression that Kuroyuki was walking a fine line with darkness.

Genji Shimada, on the other hand, grinned mischievously. "Shisui, you sure know how to give me a tough job. You know I don't like moving, right? Well, I guess I'll leave now, Itachi-chan!" He winked at Itachi with a teasing smile.

Itachi rolled his eyes in exasperation. Genji's reputation preceded him as the wild son of the Shimada family, and though his appearance didn't fit the description, the man's carefree attitude seemed to make a habit of attracting attention.

"Go ahead, Genji. And don't forget the cool pronunciation I taught you!" Itachi called out with a mocking gesture, causing the carefree Shimada to vanish into the distance. A strange, almost comedic sound echoed in the air as he left.

"Hahaha, what a real character!" Itachi laughed at Genji's antics, his mood lightening despite the mission's gravity.

Shisui raised an eyebrow. "Itachi, what exactly is so funny? I mean, I get the pronunciation part, but... it's a bit weird, don't you think?"

"It's complicated," Itachi replied with a smirk. "You don't want to know the things the prodigal son of the Shimada family says."

Shisui, still confused, glanced at Genji's retreating figure and then at Itachi. "I'm not so sure. I think he's kind of handsome... Maybe I'll find out one day?" He paused and then shrugged. "Nah, I'd rather not. Itachi's got some pretty strange ways, but I'm sure whatever he says, it's probably not something worth knowing."

Itachi's voice called out from ahead, breaking Shisui's train of thought. "Shisui, hurry up! You're too slow!"

Laughing, Shisui quickened his pace, a wide grin on his face. Despite being from a prestigious clan, Itachi's usual aloofness made him appear almost like a rebellious child. But that was just part of Itachi's charm.

Meanwhile, hidden behind a tree, Kuroyuki stood silently, watching the two Uchiha leave. He removed his mask, revealing his face—a right eye void of emotion, and a left eye marked by a long, jagged scar. However, the most striking feature was his Sharingan, a three-tomoe mark glowing ominously.

The mission was clear: keep a close eye on the two Uchiha. The higher-ups didn't trust them, and they wanted every moment to be scrutinized. But as Kuroyuki observed, the two young Uchiha didn't seem like a threat. Despite the mission being in its early stages, Kuroyuki could already tell that these two children were well-behaved.

Especially Uchiha Shisui, whose reputation as a genius was well-earned. His strength now surpassed that of most jounin, even though he had only just graduated from the ninja academy. As for Uchiha Itachi, despite being barely seven years old, his prowess was undeniable. He was a genius among geniuses. Even as a child, Itachi was no ordinary chuunin.

Kuroyuki couldn't help but wonder—were all Uchiha this gifted? He didn't know, but something felt off. There was a part of him that didn't want these children to fall victim to the same fate as their father, Uchiha Fugaku. But with the village's politics at play, he wasn't so sure they would escape unscathed.

Sighing, Kuroyuki put his mask back on. "Maybe it's all just a misunderstanding," he muttered to himself. "Still, I can't shake the feeling that these two will be dragged into something bigger."

---

Not long after Kuroyuki disappeared, another figure emerged from the shadows—Genji Shimada. His voice was low as he mumbled to himself. "Just as Lord Danzo predicted, the Third Hokage is still keeping an eye on the Uchiha. Even for something as small as this mission, they're being watched."

Though he thought the two Uchiha were well-behaved, he couldn't ignore their strengths. "Their power is still nothing compared to the likes of a true jounin, though. They'll just need to be observed for a couple of days, then the mission will end."

As Genji continued on his path, Kuroyuki, now back on a nearby tree trunk, observed him silently, his gaze sharp and calculating. The last time he had seen Genji, he'd dismissed the man as an idiot. But now, something felt different. Perhaps the Uchiha clan's fate was tied to these events more deeply than he had realized.

(Note:The timeline of the story was a bit confusing, even to the author. Shisui was three years old, Itachi was six, and Sasuke was mistakenly listed as six, but he was actually still five. Itachi's journey had begun much earlier, awakening his Sharingan at the age of eight due to tragic events.)
