Chapter 7: Chapter 7: Quiet Infiltration
The capital may not have a large permanent population but is bustling with activity.
Due to Drum Country's reputation as a renowned medical nation, despite its small population and limited size, its medical technology is well-known across nearby seas. As a result, many sick dignitaries and nobles have traveled far and wide to seek medical treatment on the island.
This influx also contributes significantly to the island's economy. The relative prosperity here largely owes itself to the spending of these visiting foreigners.
After all, in the world of One Piece—especially in places like the Grand Line—only those with substantial resources or pirates can travel by sea. When such wealthy visitors come to Drum Island, they naturally spend considerable amounts of money. Even if the island's residents only benefit indirectly, it still allows them to live fairly well.
As the capital of Drum Island, it boasts the most advanced medical technology on the island. It also serves as a gathering place for affluent visitors, giving it a relatively prosperous appearance.
But Shin wasn't here to study medicine. His gaze shifted to the tall castle at the city's center as he considered his plan.
'A medieval-style castle like this might deter ordinary civilians, but it's practically defenseless for a ninja like me, with all its dark corners.'
Ninjas operate in the shadows, and while combat is a core skill, the Academy also rigorously teaches skills like infiltration, eavesdropping, and intelligence gathering.
In the world of pirates, this is nearly an unbeatable advantage. Unless the other side possesses Haki, Shin feels confident he can infiltrate most locations undetected.
Drum Island's royal palace would be one of those places.
That night, Shin quietly approached the castle's back wall.
A high wall might deter an army, but scaling the wall was trivial for Shin, who learned to use chakra to walk on trees and water.
He easily climbed up the wall and slipped through a square window. Based on his Academy training, Shin deduced the castle's layout, identifying the likely location of the master bedroom, and began his approach.
Whenever he encountered a guard or maid, he concealed himself on the ceiling, outside the wall, or in any blind spot. He transformed into other objects or directly hid if he heard sounds around a corner. His covert skills would put Agent 007 to shame as he smoothly reached a large bedroom door.
Outside the bedroom, two armored guards stood. Shin frowned slightly. While his stealth was effective against most, he couldn't simply walk into a guarded room unnoticed.
However, he only paused briefly. Taking out two senbon needles, he lightly flicked his wrist, and the needles struck the guards in their necks.
Their eyes widened momentarily before they slumped into unconsciousness. Although Shin couldn't replicate the precision of certain highly skilled ninja medics, he'd coated the needles with a nerve anesthetic. These guards, slightly stronger than ordinary civilians, couldn't resist a specialized ninja sedative.
As the guards began to collapse, Shin moved swiftly to support them against the wall, preventing their armor from clanking as they hit the ground. He had no intention of alerting anyone.
Pushing the door open, he entered the bedroom. In the center, a luxurious bed held an old man with a frail appearance; a crown rested on the pillow beside him.
The old man slept soundly. Shin examined him briefly, took out a vial, and gently administered its contents.
At one point, the man stirred, but the drug soon took effect, and he slipped back into a stupor.
'If only I knew more about genjutsu. A bit of hypnotic skill would make this much easier,' Shin muttered. Although he hadn't mastered genjutsu, he could use chakra to achieve mild hypnotic effects.
Even without formal illusions, the Academy provided theory and methods for countering genjutsu, which could also help produce minor hypnotic results.
Combined with the drug's effect, putting a regular old man into a suggestible state was relatively easy.
The king fell into a deep trance, and Shin nodded with satisfaction. Using a subtle chakra pulse around the old man's head, he whispered, "Where is the treasure vault of Drum Country? Where is the Devil Fruit kept?"
The old man trembled as he murmured the vault's location. Fortunately, the Devil Fruit was indeed stored there. But just after revealing this, he convulsed, foam forming at the corners of his mouth, and he began to struggle for breath.
Shin was surprised. He hadn't anticipated his medicine to be fatal, but on checking, he found that the king was simply at the end of his natural life. Even the mild strain of his method had pushed him beyond his limits.
Scratching his head, Shin sighed, "That wasn't my intention."
However, given the king's deteriorating health, Shin realized he would have likely passed away in a matter of days even without intervention.
As a lousy king, Shin felt no real remorse for the outcome.
In fact, the king's death could make Shin's mission easier. After inspecting the body, he placed it into his sealing scroll for safekeeping. Then, using a transformation technique, he took on the appearance of the old king.
After a few coughing sounds to adjust his voice, Shin found that he could accurately mimic the king's voice. Despite its simplicity, the voice-mimicking technique taught at the Academy proved remarkably useful.
Opening the door, Shin revitalized the two unconscious guards outside and scolded them for "falling asleep" on duty.
The guards felt something was off, but since nothing seemed amiss, they simply nodded and silently took their reprimand.
With these guards in tow, the disguised "king" made his way to the treasure vault confidently.
