Chapter 35: Four
The explosion was deafening as the center of the bridge was torn apart in a massive eruption of force. The wooden planks shattered like twigs, and the bridge groaned under the sheer power unleashed by Naruto's attack. Smoke and dust filled the air, creating a thick cloud that obscured the battlefield.
Nyx landed gracefully on the far edge of the bridge, her boots touching down on a thin layer of frost she instinctively left in her wake. Her heart raced, but her face remained calm, composed as ever. She narrowed her eyes, trying to peer through the thick smoke. The sound of splintering wood echoed through the mountains, and for a moment, all was silent except for the wind howling through the now-damaged bridge.
What is this kid becoming? Nyx thought, her chest rising and falling with controlled breaths. She could sense the danger escalating, feel it in the air.
As the smoke slowly began to clear, a terrifying sight greeted her. There, standing amidst the debris, was Naruto, but he was no longer the boy she had seen moments ago. A monstrous, chakra-infused aura surrounded him, and from his back, four distinct tails of crimson chakra had emerged, each one flickering and writhing like the flames of hell itself.
Nyx's eyes widened ever so slightly. The Fourth Tail… The transformation had advanced much further than she anticipated, and now, what stood before her wasn't just Naruto—it was the Nine-Tails itself, or at least a glimpse of its terrifying power. The air around him shimmered with an oppressive heat, and the ground beneath his feet was scorched, as if the sheer intensity of his chakra was burning through the earth.
Kabuto had barely avoided the blast, landing a few meters away, his breathing ragged. His cloak was singed, and his usually calm, collected demeanor had been replaced by a look of genuine concern. Even he had underestimated the ferocity of Naruto's transformation.
Orochimaru, however, was practically glowing with amusement, his serpentine grin widening as he watched the spectacle unfold. "Magnificent," he hissed, his voice filled with twisted admiration. "The power of the Nine-Tails, unleashed in all its raw, untamed glory. How exhilarating."
Naruto let out a guttural growl, his voice no longer human. The red chakra swirled violently around him, his eyes now completely overtaken by the Kyuubi's influence. His hands, clawed and monstrous, flexed with destructive intent, and with a sudden burst of speed, he lunged toward Orochimaru.
Nyx's breath hitched as she witnessed Naruto's speed. He's fast! Faster than before, far more dangerous. The ground cracked beneath his force as he surged toward Orochimaru, intent on tearing him apart.
But Orochimaru, ever the opportunist, was ready. With a flick of his wrist, the legendary Sannin summoned a massive snake from the depths of the earth. It coiled around him protectively, its scales shimmering with chakra. But even Orochimaru couldn't help but show a brief flicker of alarm as Naruto's claws tore through the snake's body with ease.
The snake screeched as it was ripped apart, blood and scales scattering across the battlefield. Orochimaru leaped backward, avoiding the brunt of the assault, but even he could see that Naruto was growing more unstable by the second.
Nyx, watching from her vantage point, felt the temperature around her drop. Her ice-cold chakra swirled within her, reacting to the rising threat. But despite the growing tension, her mind remained sharp, calculating. She knew she had to be cautious. One wrong move, and she could find herself in the crossfire of Naruto's wrath.
Her gaze flicked toward Kabuto, who had already started to reposition himself. He was observing the situation carefully, likely trying to formulate a plan to either control or suppress Naruto. But Nyx could tell from the tension in his posture that even Kabuto was unsure how to handle this escalating crisis.
As Naruto rampaged, his chakra tails lashing out violently, the bridge continued to crumble. The structure was already weakened from the earlier explosion, and now it teetered dangerously on the brink of collapse.
Naruto roared again, his chakra flaring even higher as he charged Orochimaru once more. But this time, Orochimaru's grin vanished, replaced by a look of grim determination. The playful taunts were gone—he now faced a creature of pure destruction.
Just as Naruto's claws were about to connect with Orochimaru, his wild, red, chakra-filled eyes suddenly shifted, locking onto Nyx. The air around them seemed to freeze for a moment, the tension thickening as if the world itself paused in anticipation. Orochimaru's smirk remained, but his eyes flickered toward Nyx, a silent, unspoken invitation between them. It was clear what he was thinking—the offer he had dangled before her earlier, the temptation to join his twisted cause. The way he saw it, if Nyx stepped in now, if she helped him, it would be her silent agreement to align with him and his ambitions.
For a brief moment, Nyx considered the absurdity of the situation. Here she stood, at the center of a chaotic storm—Naruto, nearly consumed by the Kyuubi's power, Orochimaru, a serpent whispering of dark promises, and the broken remnants of the bridge creaking beneath their feet. She was no stranger to manipulation or deals made in the shadows, but to think she would throw her lot in with Orochimaru... that was laughable.
And so, she laughed.
The sound cut through the air like shards of ice, sharp and unexpected amidst the chaos. Her laughter was cold, a chilling contrast to the violent energy crackling in the air. Orochimaru's smirk faltered slightly, his golden eyes narrowing as he studied her.
"What?" Nyx's voice dripped with amusement as her laughter died down, her icy blue eyes gleaming with a mixture of disdain and amusement. She tilted her head slightly, her expression composed, a small, mocking smile tugging at her lips. "You thought I was going to help you?"
Naruto's snarls continued, the energy of the Kyuubi swirling violently around him as the crimson chakra formed into the shape of a fourth tail. The ground beneath his feet cracked, and the bridge groaned under the weight of his growing power. But Nyx didn't flinch. Her attention was solely on Orochimaru now, her smile widening as if she found the whole situation amusing.
Orochimaru's expression turned cold, the gleam in his eyes darkening. "I thought you were smarter than this, Nyx," he said, his voice slithering out like venom. "You could have so much more than this... join me, and you'll unlock your full potential."
Nyx remained unfazed, her icy demeanor unwavering. She took a slow step forward, the frost that seemed to naturally follow her every move creeping along the surface of the bridge, leaving a thin, shimmering layer of ice in its wake. Her blade, still sheathed at her side, hummed with power as the temperature around her dropped even further.
"And what would I gain, Orochimaru?" she asked, her tone dripping with mock curiosity. "The privilege of being your pawn? Your little experiment, perhaps?" She shook her head, her smile fading into something colder, more serious. "I don't need you for that."
Orochimaru's eyes narrowed, his amusement fading into something more sinister. "Careful, Nyx. You might regret those words."
Nyx's gaze remained icy and unyielding. "No, Orochimaru. I think you're the one who's going to regret underestimating me."
Naruto, still caught in the throes of the Kyuubi's rage, roared, his chakra surging again as the bridge began to buckle under the pressure. His feral eyes darted between Orochimaru and Nyx, his mind struggling to process the chaos surrounding him. The fourth tail had fully formed now, and the air around him crackled with violent energy. But even amidst the chaos, Nyx stood her ground, not even sparing Naruto a glance as the beast within him tore at the seams.
The frost beneath her feet expanded rapidly, encircling her in a protective barrier of ice. The bridge creaked dangerously under the combined pressure of Naruto's chakra and Nyx's icy power, but she didn't flinch, didn't move.
"You see, Orochimaru," Nyx continued, her voice now calm, as if the chaos around her didn't exist, "you're not the first one to try to manipulate me, and you certainly won't be the last. But unlike you, I don't need someone else's power to grow stronger."
Orochimaru's lips curled into a snarl. "Then you've chosen your path," he hissed. "Let's see how long you survive it."
Nyx's fingers brushed against the hilt of her blade, and the air around her seemed to crystallize, growing colder with each passing second. Her eyes gleamed with dangerous resolve. "I don't need your help, Orochimaru. You're nothing more than an obstacle."
Before Orochimaru could respond, Naruto let out another ear-piercing roar, the sheer force of his chakra sending shockwaves across the bridge. The structure groaned, large chunks of it collapsing into the ravine below as Naruto charged at Orochimaru once more, completely overtaken by the Kyuubi's power.
But Nyx, with a flick of her wrist, intervened. Her blade moved like lightning, meeting Naruto's claws mid-attack. The clash sent a freezing gust of wind through the air as frost spread rapidly from the point of contact, freezing everything around them. The bridge, already fragile, began to crack even more under the immense pressure of their combined powers.
Naruto's feral eyes burned with rage as he pushed against Nyx's blade, but the ice was stronger than he anticipated. His chakra flared violently, attempting to melt the frost that held him in place, but Nyx's power was relentless, her ice encasing Naruto's arm in a thick layer of frost.
"Stay out of this, Naruto," Nyx said, her voice low but commanding. "This isn't your fight."
For a brief moment, it seemed like Naruto's human consciousness flickered through the Kyuubi's rage, but it was gone just as quickly as it appeared. The beast roared again, and with a surge of power, shattered the ice that bound him. But Nyx had already moved, her figure disappearing in a blur of speed as she repositioned herself on the other side of the bridge.
Orochimaru, watching the exchange with growing amusement, chuckled darkly. "I have to admit, Nyx, you're quite entertaining."
Nyx didn't respond. Her attention was focused entirely on Naruto now, her mind calculating her next move. The Kyuubi's chakra was too volatile, too unpredictable, and she wasn't about to get caught in its crossfire. But she also knew she couldn't allow Orochimaru to manipulate the situation to his advantage.
With a deep breath, Nyx steadied herself, her blade gleaming with frost as she prepared for the next attack. The temperature around her dropped even further, and the ground beneath her feet began to freeze over completely.
"If you want to destroy each other, go ahead," Nyx said, her voice cold as ice. "But don't expect me to clean up your mess."
Orochimaru's grin widened. "Oh, I wouldn't dream of it."
