Chapter 48: Miss Hinata runs away from home
---
"These contact lenses will do," Natsume muttered, staring into the mirror as the spiraling pattern of his Mangekyō Sharingan faded away.
"If I had these eyes transplanted, they'd have to stay open all the time," he mused, recalling Kakashi Hatake's infamous struggle with his Sharingan. "It would consume too much chakra. No wonder he's always so worn out."
A smirk tugged at his lips. "Or maybe it's just all that time reading Icha Icha Paradise."
Natsume had recently spent fifty destiny points to transfer the abilities of his Mangekyō Sharingan, unlocking a unique technique he called Pupil Power. Within a certain range, his Sharingan could grow stronger naturally or through training. However, overuse came with a cost—vision deterioration, or even blindness. Regular usage required only chakra, but techniques like Genjutsu or Susanoo drained immense reserves.
"Kabuto, I'll leave the rest to you," Natsume said, turning to Yakushi Kabuto, who was busy adjusting medical equipment with meticulous precision.
"Mm-hmm," Kabuto replied absentmindedly, his sharp gaze fixed on his work. His excitement was barely contained—he finally had the chance to experiment with both Hashirama's cells and his custom poisons. Opportunities like this didn't come often.
Uchiha Shisui's injuries had been severe, and Natsume had entrusted Kabuto with the task of using Hashirama's cells to stabilize him. Supplies were abundant for now, and if they ran low, Orochimaru was always willing to trade... after some persuasion. Orochimaru's recent defeat ensured he wasn't in a position to refuse.
"If Shisui doesn't resist, it'll be a relief for him," Natsume thought aloud, recalling Shisui's overly idealistic nature. "This Konoha isn't fit for him anymore."
Still, Shisui's survival was preferable. He could become a useful tool. Natsume trusted Kabuto's skill—after all, Kabuto had trained under Tsunade, a legendary healer.
Without lingering further, Natsume left the lab and headed home.
"Where's Sensei?" he asked upon entering, glancing around for Tsunade.
"She went to the Hokage's office," Shizune replied, her tone tinged with surprise. "A rogue ninja appeared in the Forest of Death this morning. He tried to attack Konoha, but the Hokage drove him away."
"As expected of the strongest Hokage!" Natsume said, grinning as he gave a playful thumbs-up. "With Hokage-sama around, Konoha is sure to prosper."
Shizune blinked. While Natsume's words sounded sincere, his tone carried an odd edge. She decided not to press further.
Since Tsunade wasn't home, Natsume ascended the stairs to train. On the top floor were a collection of items and research notes left behind by the legendary Senju brothers, Hashirama and Tobirama. While no forbidden jutsu remained—those had long since been claimed by the village—Tobirama's studies on the Uchiha clan were still intact. Natsume searched through the documents, hoping for something useful.
After some time, he found exactly what he needed: methods to enhance Sharingan proficiency.
One of the simplest techniques involved tracking fast-moving objects. It was no wonder the Uchiha excelled in combat precision—training their eyes to perceive even the smallest details was integral to their strength.
"Practice makes perfect," Natsume muttered, summarizing the findings. Training the Sharingan mirrored cultivating spiritual energy; repetition and experience were key.
Satisfied, his thoughts drifted to the Hyūga clan. As Byakugan users, their focus on pupil techniques could provide valuable insights. Most Uchiha would never gain access to such knowledge, but Natsume had an ace up his sleeve.
Forming a hand seal, he connected to the vision of a summoned slug linked to Hinata Hyūga. Familiar with her routine, he knew she'd be finishing her training around this time. Yet something was amiss—Hinata was injured. Normally, Hyūga clan medical-nin would handle such matters, but Hinata's timid nature likely kept her silent.
Natsume sighed. With a flick of his hands, he performed the Reverse Summoning Technique.
Hinata let out a startled yelp as smoke filled the room. When the haze cleared, her eyes widened at the sight of Natsume. She instinctively hid her hands behind her back.
"N-Natsume," she stammered, lowering her head in embarrassment.
"Show me your hands," Natsume said, his sharp gaze scanning her petite frame. He couldn't fathom how anyone could harm someone so gentle.
"Eh?" Hinata blinked, momentarily confused. Her wide, innocent eyes reminded him of a startled deer.
"Your hands," he repeated firmly. Kneeling, he gently pulled her right hand forward, revealing bruises marring her pale skin.
Hinata's cheeks flushed as she felt the warmth of his touch. She instinctively tried to pull away, but Natsume's grip was steady.
"Why didn't you see a medical-nin?" he asked, his tone softening.
"I... I was afraid my father would be disappointed," Hinata whispered, tears threatening to fall as she looked down.
Natsume frowned. Both hands bore similar bruises. Hiashi's rigorous expectations were clearly overwhelming her. Most would have broken under such pressure, but Hinata endured without complaint.
"Come on, I'll take you to a great medic," he said, thinking of Yakushi Nono.
"G-Go out?" Hinata stammered, her eyes wide. "Father doesn't allow me to leave. If he finds out, he'll be furious."
"Then we won't let him find out," Natsume said with a mischievous smirk.
"But... but..."
"You don't trust me?" he asked, tilting his head.
"N-No! I trust you!" Hinata exclaimed, only to blush furiously at her outburst. Her heart raced.
Natsume created a shadow clone that transformed into an identical copy of Hinata. "What do you think? She'll handle things here while we sneak out."
Hinata stared at the clone in awe. It was a flawless replica.
"I... I'm sorry, Natsume," she whispered, her resolve faltering.
If Hiashi ever found out, Natsume thought, he'd probably face the full wrath of the Hyūga clan. Still, he couldn't let Hinata suffer in silence.
---
"Come on up."
Natsume knelt in front of Hinata, glancing over his shoulder.
"Huh?"
Hinata blinked, unsure of what he was asking.
"To avoid the Hyuga Clan guards when we leave, it's best if I carry you on my back," Natsume explained with a soft smile. Then, with a playful tilt of his head, he added, "Unless, of course, you'd prefer I carry you in my arms?"
Hinata's cheeks flushed a deep crimson as she waved her hands in protest. "N-No, that's not necessary!"
Her voice faltered as she hesitantly stepped closer, awkwardly wrapping her arms around his neck. She stood on her tiptoes, and Natsume, with practiced ease, secured her legs and hoisted her onto his back.
"Comfortable?" he asked gently.
Hinata gave a small nod, her face still bright red as she murmured, "Y-Yes... thank you."
The two began their silent journey through the Hyuga compound. Since the attempted kidnapping by the Kumo ninja, the clan's defenses had been fortified. Guards now patrolled the grounds day and night, their vigilance making it nearly impossible for anyone to enter or leave unnoticed.
But Natsume wasn't just anyone. He activated his Mangekyō Sharingan, timing their escape with precision. Every patrol's movements, every potential blind spot—they were all mapped in his mind.
Hinata tensed, gripping Natsume's shoulders a little tighter. She wasn't just nervous about being caught; her heart raced from the closeness. Feeling his warmth, her thoughts became a jumbled mess until Natsume's calm voice pulled her back.
"We're here."
He set her down gently outside the compound. Hinata blinked, looking around at the quiet street. Though it was ordinary, the simple act of leaving the clan grounds felt exhilarating.
"An orphanage?" she asked curiously, noticing the worn but welcoming building ahead.
Natsume nodded. "The director here, Yakushi Nono, is a skilled medical ninja. I thought she might help with your injuries." He smiled warmly, motioning for her to follow. "I grew up here, actually. Everyone calls her 'Dean,' so feel free to do the same."
Hinata looked up at him in surprise. "You grew up here...?"
Her heart ached at the thought. Despite everything he'd endured, Natsume carried himself with such kindness and strength. She opened her mouth to respond, but before she could find the words, a group of children burst out of the orphanage.
"Natsume-nii!"
"Big brother!"
"Do you have snacks?"
Natsume chuckled, crouching down to greet them. "Of course I do." He reached into his storage scroll and summoned a variety of treats, handing them out to the cheering children. "Don't fight now—there's enough for everyone."
Hinata watched from the sidelines, her chest tightening as she observed the scene. He's so kind, she thought. A soft smile graced her lips as one of the smaller children clung to his arm, calling him "Natsume-nii."
A familiar voice interrupted the moment. "Is that you, Natsume?"
Yakushi Nono emerged from the building, her sharp eyes quickly noting the presence of the Hyuga heiress.
"Lady Hinata?" Nono's brows lifted in mild surprise. She glanced back at Natsume, a hint of suspicion flickering in her gaze. Could the Hyuga Clan be considering him as a suitor? The thought amused her, but she quickly set it aside.
"Dean, could you take a look at Hinata's hands?" Natsume asked politely, his tone more formal now.
Nono nodded, stepping closer to Hinata. "Of course. Let me see, dear."
Hinata hesitated before rolling up her sleeves, revealing bruised forearms. "They're from training with my father," she explained quietly, her voice tinged with embarrassment.
Nono frowned as she channeled green healing chakra into her palms. "There's pushing oneself, and then there's this. You should know your limits, child."
The gentle warmth of the chakra soothed Hinata's injuries, and the bruises gradually faded. She bowed her head deeply. "Thank you, Dean."
Nono smiled, patting Hinata's head. "What a polite young lady. You're welcome anytime."
After dismissing the children, Natsume approached Nono. "Thank you, Dean. Is everything alright here?"
Nono waved him off with a knowing smile. "You worry too much, as always. This was a minor injury." She glanced between the two with a twinkle in her eye. "Now, you two enjoy yourselves. I have other matters to attend to."
With that, she disappeared inside, leaving them alone in the quiet yard.
Hinata glanced up at Natsume. "You're... very kind to them," she said softly, motioning toward the children who had now scattered.
Natsume smiled faintly. "They're family to me. It's the least I can do."
Hinata nodded, her heart swelling with a mix of admiration and something else—something she couldn't quite put into words.
Natsume turned to Hinata with a small smile. "Let me show you around. I don't get many chances like this."
Hinata hesitated for a moment before nodding. "O-okay…" she replied softly. Despite her initial nerves, she found herself eager to spend more time with him.
The area around the orphanage was quiet and peaceful. Natsume deliberately steered them away from crowded streets, his sharp senses alert for any signs of Hyūga clan guards. The last thing I need is to be accused of kidnapping the Hyūga heiress, he thought, suppressing a wry grin.
"Wait here for a moment," he said suddenly. Before Hinata could respond, he vanished in a blur of movement using the Body Flicker Technique.
Hinata blinked in surprise, her heart skipping a beat as she looked around nervously. Relief washed over her as he reappeared moments later, holding two skewers of three-colored dango.
"I managed to grab the last ones," Natsume said, offering her one with an easy smile.
Hinata's eyes widened with delight. "Thank you!" she said, taking the skewer gingerly. She bit into the sweet dumpling, savoring the rare treat. The two stood together in companionable silence, the bustling sounds of the village muted in the distance.
As Natsume watched her, he found himself smiling faintly. She's so different from the others… quiet, but strong in her own way.
Meanwhile, tension filled the Hokage's office.
The air was heavy as Sarutobi Hiruzen sat at his desk, flanked by Jiraiya, Orochimaru, Mitokado Homura, and Utatane Koharu. Shimura Danzō stood to one side, his presence cold and commanding despite his useless arm. Uchiha Fugaku, having arrived moments earlier, wore a grim expression that betrayed his simmering frustration.
Jiraiya had just finished recounting recent events—the disappearance of Uchiha Sasuke, Uchiha Shisui's vanishing, and the rumors of Orochimaru and Danzō's involvement in targeting Uchiha Itachi.
Fugaku's patience had reached its limit. "Lord Hokage," he began, his voice low but firm, "the Uchiha clan demands answers. If this matter is not addressed, I cannot guarantee that the clan will remain silent."
The underlying threat was clear: if action wasn't taken, the Uchiha might revolt.
Danzō, already seething from his injury, snapped, "Are you threatening the village, Fugaku?"
"Enough!" Hiruzen's voice cut through the tension like a blade, his authoritative tone silencing the room. "Danzō, hold your tongue."
Danzō scowled but said nothing further, the weight of Hiruzen's glare keeping him in check.
Hiruzen turned to Orochimaru. "Orochimaru, do you know anything about Sasuke's disappearance?"
The snake-like Sannin tilted his head, his trademark smirk curling his lips. "Why would I know such a thing, Lord Hokage? Perhaps you should ask Danzō. After all, he oversees Root."
All eyes turned to Danzō, who stiffened at the accusation. He knew Orochimaru well enough to recognize the subtle maneuvering. That snake…
"This has nothing to do with me!" Danzō countered quickly. "If anything, it's the Uchiha themselves, using this as a pretext to stir unrest."
Fugaku's calm façade cracked, his voice rising. "Do you think I would sacrifice my own son to make a political statement? How dare you insult the Uchiha clan!"
Before the argument could escalate, an ANBU agent appeared in the room, kneeling before Hiruzen.
"Lord Hokage, Uchiha Sasuke has been found near the Minamiga River. He's unharmed but appears exhausted from overusing his chakra. It seems he's been training excessively."
The tension in the room eased slightly at the news, though Fugaku's anger remained.
"This is far from resolved," Fugaku said, his voice icy. "Shisui is still missing, and the Uchiha clan demands accountability. Lord Hokage, if these conspiracies against us continue, the consequences will be severe."
Hiruzen exhaled deeply, his weariness evident. "Fugaku, I understand your frustration. Rest assured, we will not rest until Shisui is found. As for Sasuke, I will personally investigate the circumstances of his disappearance."
Turning his attention to Danzō and Orochimaru, Hiruzen's gaze hardened. "Your actions have endangered Konoha. From this moment, both of you are to step back from your duties and reflect on your missteps. Danzō, Root will undergo a full investigation. If we uncover evidence of wrongdoing, you will face severe consequences."
Danzō opened his mouth to protest, but Hiruzen's killing intent silenced him. Orochimaru, meanwhile, merely chuckled, his expression unreadable.
"Very well," Orochimaru said smoothly. "I'll take my leave, then."
Fugaku stood rigid, his distrust of both men evident. "Lord Hokage, this is not enough. The Uchiha will not sit idly by."
Hiruzen nodded gravely. "Fugaku, I entrust you with leading the search for Shisui. You will have the full support of ANBU."
Jiraiya stepped forward. "I'll assist as well. Shisui's talents are too valuable to lose."
The room fell silent as Hiruzen dismissed the meeting. As the others filed out, the Hokage leaned back in his chair, the weight of the village's troubles pressing down on him.
"Don't disappoint me, Itachi," he murmured to himself. "The future of the village depends on your resolve."
