Chapter 136: Chapter 136
After the nighttime battle on the streets of New York, besides earning Tony his moniker as Iron Man, S.H.I.E.L.D. also managed to obtain the remains of the Iron Monger.
Initially, both S.H.I.E.L.D. and Hydra, hidden within its ranks, believed that by reverse-engineering the Iron Monger, they could develop a battlefield-dominating war machine. Their goal was clear: mass-produce these steel behemoths.
However, reality soon crushed their lofty ambitions.
Although they successfully recreated a brand-new, flawless Iron Monger, complete with an arsenal of weapons, the absence of the Arc Reactor as its core energy source and the Jarvis-like subsystem for superior operational performance reduced the towering, multi-ton, extravagantly expensive steel machine to little more than an oversized pile of scrap metal.
Unwilling to accept this monumental loss, S.H.I.E.L.D. and Hydra turned their focus to the missing critical component: the Iron Monger's head.
Thus, after extensive analysis and investigation, the "clown" who had taken the head that day quickly entered their radar.
Around the same time, Kingpin—who had been collaborating with Hydra—offered a handsome reward to deal with the clown who had cost him dearly in Hell's Kitchen.
Hydra, already planning to take action against the clown, gladly accepted Kingpin's payment.
"The Iron Monger's head, huh?"
Recalling the video footage of the Iron Monger, a war machine seemingly incarnate, Brock's eyes burned with fervor.
"I understand. I'll retrieve the head."
"Of course, I have no doubt about that," the figure in front of him replied after a pause. "Also, this clown seems to possess extraordinary abilities. For this mission, I've secured temporary access to the Winter Soldier. He'll assist you."
The mention of the Winter Soldier brought a confident smile to Brock's face, further boosting his resolve for the mission.
...
Elsewhere, at a café, Eren toyed with the Crystal Eye, a mischievous grin flashing across his face as a thought struck him.
At that moment, he sneezed violently several times.
"Ah-choo!"
Rubbing his itchy nose, Eren's eyes narrowed coldly.
"This feeling… is someone plotting against me?"
With his strong divination abilities and precise control over his facial muscles, Eren knew that his sneezes weren't mere coincidences.
Excluding common causes like colds, every sneeze he had was a warning from fate—a subtle nudge from destiny itself.
"Interesting. Could it be Kingpin? After being quiet for so long, he finally wants to make a move."
Pocketing the Cursed Straw Doll and Crystal Eye, Eren adjusted his black top hat and leisurely made his way back to Hell's Kitchen.
Shortly after stepping into Hell's Kitchen, Eren's steps faltered for a moment.
A slight smile graced his lips as he adjusted his hat, then veered off the main road.
Seconds later, two burly men glanced at Eren from afar before silently tailing him.
...
Minutes passed.
When Eren turned into a secluded alley, the two men quickened their pace, following closely.
"Where is he?"
"Gone?"
The alley was a dead end, littered with trash. The two men exchanged uneasy glances.
Just as they considered retreating, a chilling voice echoed from above.
"Looking for me, gentlemen?"
Startled, they instinctively looked up—only to be swallowed by mesmerizing illusions and the terrifying gaze of someone who seemed to tower above them.
Dread Gaze!
The attack instantly shattered their mental defenses.
Hanging by his enchanted threads, Eren descended from above, plucking an earpiece from each of their ears and crushing them.
Then, summoning the power of Mental Seal, he interrogated them while rummaging through their belongings.
Beyond a pile of fake IDs, all he found were two photos of himself, which he promptly destroyed.
After extracting the information he needed, Eren pointed a finger, unleashing the ravenous Threads of Malice, which devoured their bodies and souls in an instant.
"Convenient ability for clean-up."
During the brief window created by Dread Gaze, Eren had hypnotized the two to reveal critical information.
These weren't hired assassins from Kingpin but agents sent by Hydra. Their mission was to kill Eren and retrieve the Iron Monger's head.
Hydra believed that with their tech, the head would eventually allow them to replicate the Iron Monger and, perhaps one day, produce their own Iron Man-style heroes.
"Hydra, huh? Do they think I'm that easy to deal with?"
Shaking his head, Eren approached his temporary, smoke-stained residence. A faint smirk played on his lips.
"Seems like there's a guest at home!"
