67: The Land Deed
Yang Cao’s matter was merely a small interlude. After the master craftsman arrived with his group of workers in grand fashion, Gu Yu quickly put it out of his mind.
Gu Yu had originally planned to do something else after finishing breakfast, but unexpectedly, the master craftsman was very honest—when he said he would build the house today, he meant today, without any intention of being late.
However, Gu Yu didn’t immediately lead them to the new house site. Instead, he asked them to wait outside while he ran to the village head’s home.
“Village Head, the craftsmen for building the house have arrived. Is the land deed ready?”
“It’s already done. Yesterday afternoon, the government office sent people to measure the land. I went with them and only returned after everything was completed.”
“I really must thank the Village Head for your help. Otherwise, I would have been overwhelmed with busyness and might not have finished everything.”
“It’s nothing. I’ve accepted your gift, so I can’t just do nothing.”
After arriving at the Village Head’s house, Gu Yu directly asked for the land deed.
Before getting the deed in hand, Gu Yu didn’t dare to start building casually… Not to mention, what if something changed about the land purchase when the house was already half-built? Should they continue or not?
So while talking with the Village Head, when he saw the deed being handed over, Gu Yu glanced at the characters on it before satisfactorily tucking it into his robe.
“Goudan, you can read?”
“My uncle taught me for a few days. I only roughly recognize a few characters.”
“Oh, although you’re not that young anymore, if you have the opportunity to study, you still should! Just by studying more, a person can change completely, and then…”
“Village Head, the craftsmen are still waiting at my home. I need to go now!”
“Ah! Wait, I’ll take you there. Although the land has been measured, you don’t know where the boundary stones are placed. It wouldn’t be good if your family used too much or too little land.”
Seeing the Village Head becoming long-winded and about to ramble again, Gu Yu directly interrupted his speech.
Then, using the excuse that the craftsmen were waiting, Gu Yu was about to leave the Village Head’s house, but who would have thought… the Village Head’s subsequent words made it impossible for Gu Yu to refuse.
Fine, he would go then.
Just as the Village Head said, land matters needed to be taken seriously! Otherwise, if any disputes arose in the future, it would be troublesome.
“Goudan, yesterday quite a few people from our village went up the mountain, shouting about making big money! They really don’t know their limitations. Can just anyone go to the mountain?”
“Indeed! My wife was injured when she went up the mountain a couple of days ago. It broke my heart.”
“Sigh, we’re all just trying to make a living. No one has it easy.”
“Right, so I won’t let Mengyao go up the mountain anymore. In the future, I’ll be the one earning money, so she won’t get hurt up there… Although we’re spending the money she earned now, I can’t bear to let Mengyao take risks again.”
Just as the Village Head was about to say something, Gu Yu spoke up, blocking whatever the Village Head had been about to say.
After choking back the Village Head’s words, Gu Yu still maintained an appearance of heartache for his wife, making it impossible for the Village Head to say anything.
After Yang Cao’s request at the Gu family’s door had failed, she had immediately gone to find the Village Head, asking him to help persuade Gu Mengyao to go up the mountain to search for people.
After hearing this, the Village Head was caught in a dilemma.
Following his own inclination, he didn’t want to get involved in this matter, but since Yang Cao had come to ask for help, it was difficult to refuse.
Come to think of it… who told Yang Cao’s father to be envious of the silver earned from selling the wild boar? Now that he couldn’t come down from the mountain, it was his own fault.
But now, Yang Cao had come asking for his help to persuade Gu Mengyao…
It wasn’t that the Village Head didn’t want to help, but who would want to handle this kind of situation!
After all, the wild beasts in the mountains were very fierce. Even Gu Mengyao’s father, such a brave man, had died silently in the mountains, and they couldn’t even see his corpse.
Originally, the Village Head had been prepared to risk his old face to say a few good words and beg Gu Mengyao, but now with Gu Yu’s words, the Village Head knew there was no chance.
Hadn’t he heard how the man cared for his wife and wouldn’t let her go to the mountains at all?
