62: Bedtime
Quite a few things had happened today, and Gu Yu had been so focused on his revenge that he hadn’t even had time to eat dinner.
So when Gu Yu was feeling hungry, Gu Mengyao took the initiative to make dinner for him.
While Gu Mengyao was cooking, Gu Yu lay on the bed pretending to rest, though his consciousness had already gone into the spatial storage to take inventory.
He piled up all the snacks and toys he had bought, then looked at the remaining prey, and finally glanced at the silver carelessly placed on the ground… Gu Yu felt that he needed to get a large chest made as soon as possible.
Preferably two chests, one large and one small—the large one for silver, and the small one for banknotes.
It was perfect timing now. With the reason of building a house, when Gu Yu went to find someone to make new furniture, he could also have them make several large chests.
However, apart from buying some trinkets and paying the craftsman twenty taels as a deposit, Gu Yu still had thirty taels of silver and three hundred and fifty copper coins left.
This money was enough to support the three of them through winter, and there would even be quite a bit left after building the house.
But Gu Yu was not satisfied.
Not just this winter—in the coming year, he needed to support all three of them, so he needed more silver.
So what if there were young ladies in town? Although Gu Mengyao was just a hunter’s daughter and now orphaned, she had Gu Yu doting on her. Whatever others had, she should have too.
The three members of the Gu family all looked like skinny monkeys now. Although they all had good foundations and didn’t look bad, children at this age still looked better when they were a bit plumper.
Always going hunting in the mountains wasn’t a solution either. Gu Yu felt he needed to come up with a long-term money-making method.
But there was no rush now; he could think about it slowly later.
After all, money wouldn’t just jump into his lap just because Gu Yu wanted to make money…
Moreover, Gu Yu felt he couldn’t go to town for now—that woman Bai Linyue was still there… Though Gu Yu felt that staying in the village wasn’t safe either, it was still much better than delivering himself to her.
With these thoughts, after finishing dinner and taking a short walk with Gu Mengyao outside, when it was time for bed, Gu Yu blew out the candle in one breath, embraced his little wife, and lay down to sleep.
Exhausted from the day, Gu Yu fell asleep as soon as his head hit the pillow.
As for Gu Mengyao, because she usually spent her days hunting in the mountains but had been staying home to recover from her injury, she had slept too much during the day. Now she lay wide-eyed, staring straight at the roof beams, looking completely energetic and not feeling sleepy at all.
Once night fell and all things in the world quieted down, in this peaceful atmosphere, the sounds coming from the courtyard became particularly clear.
Gu Mengyao turned over in bed, and as she lay on her side, she propped her chin on one hand, her gaze curiously fixed on the main door, wondering which unfortunate soul had stepped into the trap.
Although the person outside tried not to make a sound, the momentary cry of pain was heard very clearly by Gu Mengyao.
Whether it was the sharpened bamboo or the sharp iron clamp, after encountering these, the experience surely wouldn’t be pleasant.
But who told them to not sleep at night and instead visit someone else’s home!
Originally, Gu Mengyao had set traps just to prevent possible accidents, but now it seemed that Gu Yu’s suggestion to build a surrounding wall was right on target.
For some things, it was better to take extra precautions.
As Gu Mengyao listened to the continuous sounds from the courtyard and thought about how high the wall of their new house should be to keep people out, she unexpectedly found that Gu Yu beside her was not behaving himself. In his sleep, he reached out and wrapped his arm around Gu Mengyao’s slender waist, pulling her into his embrace.
Then, apart from hearing Gu Yu’s heartbeat, Gu Mengyao couldn’t hear anything else.
The regular beating even made Gu Mengyao feel drowsy.
As she was about to fall asleep in her drowsiness, Gu Mengyao thought to herself, having a husband wasn’t so bad after all…
