44: Another Breakfast
Youth can’t begin without being dramatic.
I feel like someone told me that a long time ago, but now that I think about it, it really doesn’t need to be dramatic.
Actually, the more dramatic it is, the harder it is on my heart and the less calm I can be. So, I really hope that youth is peaceful and uneventful. That’s what I was thinking at 5:30 in the morning.
It was a bit later than usual when I started eating breakfast.
The place was the living room on the first floor. We were sitting across from each other at the table.
Of course, what I was eating wasn’t the usual sweet bread. The six small croissants I had picked up were taken away by Kamidama Kagari and put back on the shelf.
Instead, I was given a sandwich.
Without a second thought, she handed me a sandwich, saying, “Here, I made this for you. Eat this.”
The sandwich, with its nicely toasted surface, was filled with vegetables, eggs, and ham. It was a typical but delicious and well-balanced breakfast.
It was still warm, probably because Kamidama’s house isn’t far from here. Currently living alone, Kamidama’s house is about a ten-minute walk away.
Whether this is a good or bad thing, I still can’t decide.
“Yeah, it’s really good. Thanks.”
“You’re welcome. I’ve also made lunch, so make sure to pay attention in class, okay?”
“Are you my mother? Sorry for all the trouble.”
Well, to be exact, I didn’t ask for breakfast or lunch. If I were to put it bluntly, Kamidama is doing this on her own. But still, it would be extremely rude and ungrateful to treat her efforts lightly.
After all, I’m benefiting from her whims. As long as it’s not causing me more trouble than it’s worth, I should be grateful and express that gratitude.
Taking things for granted is the worst thing. What you have today might not be there tomorrow. Reality often works that way.
“I’m not your mother, I’m your wife.”
“Don’t make it sound like I’m wrong. No matter how you look at it, that’s not the case…”
“Well, maybe I can’t be called your wife yet… but we do look like a couple.”
“We don’t look like a couple at all.”
Kamidama’s determination to become my partner was overwhelming. It’s a bit much to handle first thing in the morning.
Could you tone it down a little…? Although a more reserved Kamidama wouldn’t be bad, I wouldn’t know how to deal with it, so maybe she should stay as she is.
It’s a tricky situation.
I just want her to lower her energy a bit.
Finishing the sandwich, I put my hands together and said, “Thank you for the meal.”
In response, Kamidama smiled and said, “You’re welcome.”
“Do you always eat alone in the mornings?”
“Not always, but usually. Asahi and Sanae—my parents—are still sleeping, and Aika is really not a morning person.”
“Oh, that’s why Aika went straight back to her room.”
“Yeah, that’s right. But she’ll probably be up in about 30 minutes.”
Aika usually starts her day around six. Even to me, that’s quite early.
I’m not naturally an early riser. Like Aika, I’m not good in the mornings. If my past self from two years ago saw me now, he’d seriously doubt I was the same person.
“But you’re an early riser now… It’s surprising and doesn’t really suit you. You’ve got dark circles under your eyes.”
“It doesn’t suit me? Well, I can’t help it. They don’t go away even if I sleep.”
“You’re not getting enough sleep. What time do you usually go to bed?”
“Around midnight, but… stop looking at me like you don’t believe me.”
Kamidama looked at me like I was lying. Why would I lie about something so trivial?
I’m way past the age of bragging about how little sleep I get.
Don’t underestimate someone who has lived through many embarrassing moments.
“I don’t get why you suddenly look so proud… So, you’re not getting enough deep sleep.”
“If you want to put it that way, maybe. But it’s not that serious. It’s not like I’m not sleeping at all.”
“That’s not good. Ignoring small problems is a bad habit of yours. They’ll pile up and eventually crush you.”
“Don’t say scary things with such a serious face… Look, now I’m getting scared.”
My hands trembled as I held the mug. I wished she wouldn’t scare me like that.
Kamidama looked at me, deep in thought, then suddenly clapped her hands.
“Then let’s sleep together next time. That way you’ll sleep better!”
“I refuse. Besides, that would be passing out, not sleeping.”
Don’t say such stupid things with a triumphant look on your face.
Despite my exasperated expression, Kamidama’s face lit up, and she cheerfully said, “It’s decided then!”
