My Seatmate is Apparently My Wife from My Past Life; She Still Loves Me in This Life as Well

21: You are the Best

“Still, was it really good for you to hang out with me yesterday and today? You should have spent time with your friends instead of sticking around with me. I mean, I’m not someone who only thinks about romance.”

While silently performing the tedious task of trying each key on the unyielding, seemingly impenetrable door, I asked her that question.

As I’ve mentioned countless times, Kamidama Kagari is quite popular both within and outside the class.

Obviously, compared to her, it’s absurd to think I have as many friends. It’s easy to imagine that she used to spend her after-school time with those friends.

Yet suddenly, she declares, “Because you’re my husband from a previous life,” which even I, the person concerned, think makes her sound crazy. And now she’s cutting down her time with her friends, so naturally, some questions arise.

People’s opinions can change drastically over the smallest things.

There’s a real possibility that Kamidama’s reputation could drop because of her association with me… or rather, it seems quite likely.

However, Kamidama smiled, blowing away my worries.

“Hmm? It’s okay. I want to cherish the time with you right now… Besides, if a bond can be broken by something like this, it was only that strong to begin with.”

“That’s pretty harsh… If you had to choose between love and friendship, would you pick love?”

“That’s a tough question. It depends on the situation… But if it’s between you and someone else, I’d choose you.”

“Oh, oh… I see.”

I couldn’t help but feel overwhelmed by her words, which carried such a big emotion despite being said so casually. It’s honestly a bit scary!

Where does she get such energy to bring up such strong emotions?

I was genuinely scared, so I hoped she would tone it down a bit.

I had no idea how to respond, which made it even more difficult.

“I believe everything has a priority. If you don’t usually decide on such things, you’ll be in trouble when the time comes, right?”

“You say that as if you’ve experienced such a situation before…”

“I’m saying it because I have────that’s why my number one is you. Nothing can be above that, now or ever.”

“No, your emotions, they’re too intense.”

To say such things lightly to an individual, especially to a guy she just met yesterday, is not appropriate.

If she weren’t Kamidama──or rather, if she weren’t a girl talking about a past life, I might have ended up falling for her by accident.

Good… It seems my rationality is still intact.

If I were to be hit with any more of this aggressive affection, my rationality might crumble, and I’d end up liking her. I need to establish some distance while I still can.

To break this awkward atmosphere, I silently hoped the door would open as I inserted the key. This time, unlike before, it slid in smoothly.

Then, as I turned it, a satisfying click echoed in my ears.

I exhaled a long breath.

“Finally…”

“Yay, it’s the right one! We did it!”

Kamidama grabbed my shoulders and jumped up and down in joy, which helped calm my rising tension.

But this is just the first room. This task is proving to be more troublesome than I thought…

As I bit back the regret of having taken on this task, I opened the door.

It slid open with a rattling sound, revealing the contents of the classroom──the first thing that came into view was a row of bookshelves.

“A library?”

“More like a remnant of one. Most of the contents have been taken out, leaving just the shelves.”

As Kamidama said, it was hardly a library anymore, with most of its contents gone.

The long-neglected room was covered in a fair amount of dust.

It looked exactly like an abandoned former library.

However, there were still a few books left on the shelves.

I picked one up without much thought.

It was a properly bound book that seemed to be an album, probably a graduation album.

It’s likely from many years ago──back when this classroom was still in use.

It’s not like it’s hundreds of years old, but it probably spans a few decades at most. It felt heavier than it looked.

I turned the page idly.

A double-page spread of what appeared to be a group photo of graduates opened up.

There were about forty people in the photo, none of whom I knew, of course.

Unknown high school students were gathered, smiling. I couldn’t help but sigh.

I’m not good with group photos… I’m always pushed to the side and forced to smile, which I don’t enjoy at all.

I remembered being told to retake such a photo back in middle school, and I almost clicked my tongue at the memory.

I can’t stand looking at this! I thought and was about to turn the page but stopped.

No, it wasn’t that I couldn’t; I just didn’t.

My finger froze, and my eyes were drawn to a particular spot.

“What’s wrong, Uraku? Did you find something interesting?”

“Well, not interesting, but…”

When I gave a vague answer, Kamidama, looking curious, peered into the album. She then froze in place.

“What, did you find someone you know?”

“Huh? Y-Yeah, something like that.”

“Seriously? That’s amazing.”

She knows too many people… I mean, the people in this photo are all adults by now…

How can she match these faces to anyone she knows?

I realized that having such high abilities makes one seem less human.

“More importantly, why were you staring so intently at this page, Uraku?”

“Well, I wasn’t really staring that hard…”

“You were staring really hard. Was there a cute girl or something?”

“Well, kind of.”

“!!?”

Kamidama’s eyes widened in shock. You’re overreacting.

As a guy, it’s natural to think that way sometimes… I didn’t expect to feel that way about an old graduation album, though.

Putting it into words makes me feel endlessly creepy.

“Wh-Who is it…? Which one!?”

“Ugh… Don’t tease me. It’s this girl.”

I pointed to one of the female students. She had long, pale blonde hair that almost looked white.

Her delicate body looked almost unnaturally fragile.

In one word, she was a frail, beautiful young lady.

“She’s cute, but not exactly my type. But I feel really drawn to her. If I were to use Kamidama’s words, it’s like ‘there’s no one else’… Why are you blushing, Kamidama?”

Despite saying something that was obviously embarrassing, Kamidama’s face turned bright red.

She was even tearing up a bit and trembling slightly──wait, is she angry?

Maybe she’s holding back the urge to yell, “Don’t say such creepy things!”

What should I do? Would apologizing right now help? My mind raced, but it wasn’t necessary.

Kamidama hugged me tightly.

“Uuuh, I love you sooo much!”

“What, what, what!? Don’t suddenly freak out!”

“I love you… After all, you are you.”

“You’re so emotionally unstable.”

With Kamidama pressing her face against my chest, I sighed softly.

How did things turn out this way…

I wished she would let go soon. Honestly, I’m starting to understand and my heart is beginning to race.

What will I do if I accidentally fall for her?
