My Manor

Chapter 140: Chapter 140: Adoption?

When they heard that they were going to be sent back to the welfare home, several of the remaining girls immediately shook their heads vigorously.

Seeing their terrified faces, Jiang Hai was a little confused. What was going on?

Unfortunately, he couldn't understand what the girls were gesturing, so after a moment of hesitation, he went to grab the fat policeman in the police station and asked him to act as an interpreter. After the policeman saw the girls' gestures, he explained to Jiang Hai.

"They said they didn't want to go back to the welfare home. They were not happy living there. They didn't have enough to eat every day. Who cares, those damn welfare institutions..." With the explanation from this policeman, Jiang Hai slowly understood.

In fact, it's called a welfare institution, but it is really not as nice as it is portrayed in movies and TV shows.

Although welfare institutions are non-profit, they still need to spend money. The food they eat doesn't just appear out of nowhere, the water they use costs money, the electricity they use costs money, and the quilts, beds, and everything else costs money.

Even if the government provides subsidies, it's just a drop in the bucket. So under such circumstances, the children in the welfare home don't live very well. Some young children are fine. Apart from reading the Bible and not having enough to eat, they basically don't have to do any physical labor. As for what to eat, they don't have to think about it. Basically, what they eat every day is mostly various vegetable pastes. It's good enough if they don't starve to death. The older children not only have to read the Bible every day and suffer from a lack of food, but also need to work to earn their meals, since they eat more. They do odd jobs around the welfare home, and I won't say more about that.

In addition, they have to make small cookies, small foods, and the like, and go to parking lots, squares, or outside the homes of rich people in various places to sell these items. The money they earn doesn't belong to them; it must be handed in.

At the same time, everyone has their own business target each month. If they fail to meet it, although there's no corporal punishment, they will be given less food and locked in a small dark room. These are very common, and normal welfare homes operate like this.

Not to mention the abnormal welfare home where these children live. In such a welfare home, people are more violent and more irritable. Otherwise, they wouldn't be so eager to leave the place, even if it was the only place where they had a bed to sleep in.

Now, when they heard that Jiang Hai was going to send them back, they quickly shook their heads. They were unwilling to return.

"Well, I can't do anything if you don't want to go back. I can't hire underage people to work at my manor. It's illegal." Although Jiang Hai wasn't afraid of the law, it didn't mean he would break it on purpose. Hiring child laborers would land him in jail no matter where he was.

Hearing Jiang Hai's words, the girls stopped and then lowered their heads helplessly.

Among these fifteen girls, the oldest was twenty-one years old, and the youngest were fourteen-year-old twins. Among them, eight were over eighteen, and seven were considered minors: three were seventeen, two were sixteen, and there was the pair of fourteen-year-olds.

"How about this: you go back to the welfare home first. When you turn 18, come to me, and I will definitely hire you." Looking at the girls' gloomy expressions, Jiang Hai scratched his head and promised them. Hearing Jiang Hai's words, the five older girls looked at each other, hesitated, and nodded weakly.

Seeing that several girls had agreed, Jiang Hai was relieved. He immediately asked Adams to open a hotel nearby for the girls who stayed, and then contacted the best welfare home in Boston to send these seven girls there tomorrow. However, after entering the hotel, Jiang Hai opened a room for them and was about to leave. But these girls wouldn't let him leave no matter what. After all, their lives had just sparked a glimmer of hope. If Jiang Hai left now, what would they do?

How could they know if Jiang Hai was lying to them? Looking at the girls who were blocking his way and saying something crazy in sign language, Jiang Hai couldn't understand, but he also knew what they meant. In the end, Jiang Hai had no choice but to open another room in the hotel.

"Boss, I have to admit you're a kind-hearted rich man. Actually, if you were merciful, just give them some money." Moses Adams said as he still had to call the welfare home in Boston that night and go with Jiang Hai to sign a labor contract the next day. These girls were no ordinary people. Signing a labor agreement with them wasn't as simple as with Robbins and the others. Especially since Jiang Hai had hired so many girls at once, it made everything more complicated.

"It's better to teach a man how to fish than to give him a fish. Hey, you wouldn't understand even if I explained it. Do people in that industry lack money? What they need now is not money, but to truly integrate into this world and become members of society. What they need is respect and a job, not just some money that will be spent quickly. Hey, I can't explain it to you clearly. Have you contacted the welfare home?" Hearing Moses Adams' words, Jiang Hai rolled his eyes at him and said seriously.

"It's almost done. Now I've contacted three companies. They can accept five people. There are still two who are in trouble." Hearing Jiang Hai's words, Moses Adams said seriously.

"It's troublesome to contact." Hearing this, Jiang Hai curled his lips. Why not just hire a lawyer?

After saying this, Jiang Hai went into his room first, and Moses Adams also smiled bitterly.

If Jiang Hai weren't a high-quality client, Moses wouldn't serve him no matter what. It was too troublesome.

He had never heard of a big lawyer needing to arrange welfare homes for some orphans. It was truly disrespectful to treat him like this as a lawyer. But considering that Jiang Hai was paying him based on time, Moses sighed again.

As long as Jiang Hai paid, even if he asked him to compensate for finding special service personnel, Moses would have to accompany him, right?

So, he just shook his head and entered another room opened by Jiang Hai.

Because Jiang Hai wanted to save trouble, the room he opened was on the first floor of this hotel. There were fifteen girls and two men, each with their own room. He didn't mind spending a little extra. After all, it was just for one night. Once Jiang Hai entered the room, he sat on the sofa, turned on the TV, and boredly flipped through the hotel's TV programs. His mind was elsewhere.

For him, he didn't really care about the past or future of these girls. The reason he helped them today was because he felt sympathy for them.

But he didn't want to think about what would happen in the future, nor was he prepared to consider it.

If these girls didn't work well, he wouldn't hesitate to fire them.

But what others didn't know was that Jiang Hai's sixth sense told him that these new girls would work very hard.

What happened later confirmed Jiang Hai's guess that these girls truly cherished the opportunity.

"Bang, bang, bang." Just as Jiang Hai was lost in thought, there was a knock on the door.

Jiang Hai was stunned when he heard the knock. Who would knock on his door in the middle of the night? Out of curiosity, he walked to the door and opened it. However, when he opened it, he was stunned. The person knocking was none other than his fourteen-year-old sister, the girl who had stolen Cindy Clive's wallet.

"Oh, is there something wrong?" Looking at the girl in front of him, Jiang Hai looked at her strangely and asked.

"Ah..." Hearing Jiang Hai's words, the girl began to gesture. She knew that Jiang Hai couldn't understand sign language, so she gestured slowly. Sign language, in fact, is a kind of symbolic memory of actions, mainly relying on association.

After Jiang Hai looked at it several times, he guessed that the girl's message was: please don't let them leave.

The "they" she was referring to was probably her and her sister.

"Why don't you want to go to the welfare house? Yes, life there might not be very good, but I've contacted the best welfare house here. It should be better than the one you stayed in before. I promise that as long as you come to my manor to work after you turn 18, I'll definitely hire you." Seeing the girl's gestures, Jiang Hai said seriously.

But the girl shook her head after hearing Jiang Hai's words and kept gesturing the same movements, which left Jiang Hai a bit confused.

Seeing Jiang Hai's hesitant look, the girl seemed to have made up her mind. She stepped forward, stood at Jiang Hai's door, and, with both hands, took off the tattered cotton coat she was wearing.

As soon as the cotton-padded jacket came off, Jiang Hai was shocked. The girl wasn't wearing anything else under it, except for a pair of pants. Her upper body was naked. Unlike other women's bodies, Jiang Hai felt surprised, scared, and a little pity. Though she was ten years old, her body was almost undeveloped. From Jiang Hai's perspective, he could clearly see her ribs. The girl was extremely thin.

"Put it on quickly, what are you doing!" Forcing himself to look away, Jiang Hai quickly pulled the girl's clothes back up. But the girl kept taking them off, staring at Jiang Hai with determination, as if she intended to use her body to secure the opportunity to stay. This time, Jiang Hai truly didn't know what to do.

"Boss, the last welfare home has also responded... Uh, boss, am I disturbing you?" At that moment, Moses Adams, who had just finished his phone call, came over to report the news to Jiang Hai. But as soon as he entered, he saw the scene before him.

"Stop talking about useless things. This is what happened..." Hearing his words, Jiang Hai wanted to kick him. He glanced at him and quickly explained. Moses Adams was embarrassed when he heard what Jiang Hai said.

"Well, Mr. Jiang, I have no other choice. If you don't want to hire child laborers, you can only adopt them."
