Xue Feifei had been squatting in the corner outside the entire time. Although Yu Sixing had been kicked, he had been propped against the wall for quite a while to ease the pain, with He Weiyou accompanying him. The three of them watched as Qin Zhiyou cheerfully stepped out of the door. Even without anyone saying a word, they all understood what had transpired despite the lengthy period that had passed.
Xue Feifei’s eyes reddened. She glared at Qin Zhiyou but decided not to comfort her friend inside the room, knowing that the best support for her friend at the moment was peace and solitude to nurse her wounds, any interference would be counter-productive.
Qin Zhiyou paid no mind to her, and strode off. Yu Sixing shakily got up wincing in pain, and asked with a contorted face, “Hey, Qin Zhiyou, where are you going?”
Qin Zhiyou didn’t reply, but walked towards the hotel lobby. Yu Sixing, limping along with He Weiyou, followed him. The silhouettes of the three men quickly disappeared into the hotel hallway. A short while later, the sound of a revving car engine echoed from outside, indicating their departure.
Half an hour later, Xue Feifei gently knocked on the door. When Lu Weixi answered, her face was calm, her complexion normal. There were no histrionics nor despair. The room was properly ventilated, though slightly chilly because the window was open. Even the bed was tidily made, and Lu Weixi, smelling of shower gel, seemed to have taken a bath.
Upon seeing her composed demeanor, Xue Feifei hesitated, “You…” “It’s fine,” Lu Weixi shook her head. She was no longer the immature girl that would fuss over trivialities. As for the man she’d chosen, she would continue with their relationship even if it meant metaphorically bowing down to him.
She chose to think positively – at least Qin Zhiyou promised there wouldn’t be any more messy scenes like the one they’d experienced.
Of course, she felt revulsion for Qin Zhiyou despite her ostrich-like denial. As for ever treating him with warmth and gentleness like before, she knew she just couldn’t ever do it again, irrespective of the circumstances.
“Rest assured, I’m really okay.” Seeing Xue Feifei’s evident worry, Lu Weixi chuckled. “At the end of the day, I’m still Qin Zhiyou’s lawfully wedded wife, I still hold some sway over him in the eyes of his grandfather. Plus, my presence in his life is like a thorn in his side when it comes to Qin Zhigu, so at the very least, he’ll treat me well on the surface,” she reasoned.
“…Alright.” Even though she wasn’t entirely convinced, Xue Feifei held her tongue as the two of them prepared themselves for bed.
Despite Lu Weixi’s tumultuous thoughts, she fell into a deep sleep after little hesitation. The two of them managed to sleep until late morning, almost missing the hotel’s breakfast. After a leisurely breakfast and stroll, they finally headed back.
On the way back, Xue Feifei received a call. Lu Weixi made a detour to drop her off at her appointments. Xue Feifei’s assistant and manager hurried over as soon as she got out of the car as she had an important audition to attend. Lu Weixi only left after she saw Xue Feifei off to her makeup room.
She didn’t have many people she cared about, so every one of them was precious to her.
When they got home, Aunt Hao was there to greet them. As she got out of the car, Lu Weixi noticed the garage was empty. Great, Qin Zhiyou’s car wasn’t there.
Aunt Hao asked her, “Madam, would you like something to eat?”
It wasn’t exactly meal-time, and she wasn’t hungry having had a substantial breakfast earlier.
Knowing that Qin Zhiyou wasn’t home, Lu Weixi felt relaxed enough to order: “Make me some millet porridge tonight and pair it with some leafy greens, a slice of salted egg and some sauteed mushrooms. I prefer the porridge to be thick, with a layer of rice bran oil on top. I’ll take a rest now, wake me when dinner is ready.”
Aunt Hao agreed as Lu Weixi lightly made her way upstairs. She’d thought she wouldn’t be tired, but the moment she got into bed, she fell into a deep sleep.
By the time Aunt Hao woke Lu Weixi up, evening had fallen. She sluggishly got out of bed, rinsed her mouth and went to wash her face. Just as she reached the top of the stairs, she almost missed a step when she saw who was at the bottom.
Why was Qin Zhiyou back already? Seeing her come down, Qin Zhiyou was indifferent, as if the dapper beast he’d been the night before had been someone else. He glanced at her then turned back to discussing work details with Secretary Wang. Seeing the lack of attention Qin Zhiyou was giving her, Lu Weixi felt some of the pressure lessen.
Though she knew Qin Zhiyou was back not out of love or care for her but simply because she was easy to conquer with her delicate body, she was still a beautiful woman whose figure was well-maintained. She even had ballet training in the past. If one was to enjoy her physical charms alone, she must be better than most women on Zhiyou’s list.
After speaking briefly with Secretary Wang, the dinner prepared by Aunt Hao arrived, along with a portion for Qin Zhiyou. When he was not in their bedroom, he played the part of the perfect gentleman, a wealthy man’s son, not uttering a word as he ate. Once he finished his dinner, he retreated back to his study.
When Lu Weixi saw him head towards his study, she heaved a sigh of relief, she felt like letting off fireworks in celebration. If he went to his study, there was an 80% probability that he wouldn’t return. She was already grateful that they could maintain their outward appearance of marital harmony, as it seemed unlikely that they would ever be congenial towards each other again.
Yet, that night, Qin Zhiyou fell into the remaining 20% probability. Tomorrow was Monday, and after a two-day break, there was quite a bit of work waiting for her. Qin Zhiyou retreated to his study, and she went back to her bedroom in an orderly fashion. She opened her laptop, drew a few diagrams, then picked up some relevant books to enrich her knowledge. With two luxury villa projects this month, her workload had been significantly lighter than last month when she was overworked to the point of vomiting blood. She resolved to work diligently to increase her professional status, or design some well-known projects. Becoming a famous designer would allow her to live comfortably for several years off a single project rather than scrambling for more business as she currently did.
After reading for several hours, Lu Weixi massaged her throbbing brows, turned out the table lamp, put down her books, and stretched. She warmed up a cup of milk and sipped it slowly. She then went to the restroom to wash and prepare for her bath. Just as she got halfway through her bath, the bathroom door was pushed open – Qin Zhiyou had come again.
As he had once burst in while she was showering, Lu Weixi immediately grabbed a towel to cover herself and then pulled the shower curtain close, confronting him warily, “What do you want?” Why hadn’t he used the bathroom in his study?
Although Qin Zhiyou had entered, he didn’t invade her solitude, instead, he went about brushing his teeth outside. After he finished brushing his teeth, he fetched after-shave and a razor and began to shave his slightly long stubble.
Lu Weixi remained on guard under the shower, observing him from the gap in the shower curtain until he finished shaving and left the room.
As Lu Weixi sighed in relief, she thought to herself: Qin Zhiyou wouldn’t overstep his boundaries in full consciousness. What happened last night had to do with his fear that she would truly mess around with the swimwear men. Men, whether they love their wives or not, dislike being cuckolded by their spouses. It’s not about jealousy, but rather their primal instinct as males to protect their territory and females.
Before Lu Weixi could finish her train of thought, Qin Zhiyou returned. This time, he pulled back the shower curtain, wearing just a pair of pants.
Lu Weixi looked at what he was holding and finally understood why he had left the bathroom earlier and then returned: he had gone to get a small ‘barrier’!
