Chapter 9: Chapter 9 Nejire Hado
Izuku lost his voice. His dream was accompanied by words like:
"You can do it."
"Come on, hero."
"Forward, for the glory of altruism."
"Every person can be a hero."
Now everything had changed: words of support became like burning coals, which one could not touch, and if you did, you would get burned. In the corners of the young Midoriya's mind, words occasionally flashed that were true but so painful that his heart, like his dream, shattered like fragile crystal into thousands of tiny shards that were impossible to gather.
"Quirkless."
"Unworthy."
"Underdeveloped."
"You can't become a hero without a quirk."
The words echoed in Izuku's head. Unable to bear the migraine, he let out a heavy sigh, drawing the concerned gaze of Nejire, who was curious about why Izuku was crying. Unable to contain her curiosity and lacking vocabulary, Nejire straightforwardly asked why Izuku had lowered his head, not wanting to meet his pitiful eyes with those of his new friend.
- Nejire, I... I... I'm quirkless.
Nejire was surprised by Midoriya's statement, as she had never seen anyone without a quirk. All she knew about quirkless individuals was that they were a discriminated minority in society. Older people in Japan mostly lacked quirks, but again, they were also an exception. Meeting a child without a quirk was like seeing a world celebrity in a remote village. But that didn't matter: Nejire didn't care whether Izuku had a quirk or not; he spoke to her for the first time not as a weirdo but as an equal.
The major problem with communicating with Nejire was that she was overly curious, which sometimes crossed personal boundaries, putting the other person in an awkward position. Here, not only did she burst into the office, but Izuku's behavior seemed to not bother her at all; on the contrary, it made him smile and accept her as a friend, something Nejire had been missing since she started elementary school. After such a strange introduction, Nejire didn't want to abandon a friend just because he didn't have a quirk.
- So what? I believe that what makes a person a hero is not their quirk, but their heart, Izuku, — Nejire said in a cheerful tone, causing Izuku to raise his lowered head. Her words were a ray of hope through the darkness of this truth. Izuku was inspired by Nejire's words and wanted her to continue, but he didn't want to insist; he just wanted to clarify whether it was true or not.
- Is it true that you... really think so... about me?
His body filled with warmth, and Nejire's freckled face turned red, making her giggle.
- I really think so, silly. And I'm ready to be your friend, if not your best friend! — Nejire said loudly, which made Izuku give her his golden smile that brings happiness to everyone who sees it, and Nejire was no exception.
They chatted and communicated, having fun together. Izuku talked about heroes and how cool they were, and Nejire was the listener who eagerly absorbed the stories of the freckled boy. Not wanting to stay on the sidelines, Nejire shared funny stories from her life, which filled Izuku's heart with trust in her. Although she was silly at times, it was fun spending time with her.
Suddenly, a hand touched Izuku's shoulder. He turned his head and saw his mother, who looked disappointed and sad, and her expression did not match the atmosphere between him and Nejire at all.
- Ah, I see you've made a new friend, Nejire, — said a man with azure hair, who radiated a positive smile. He took Nejire by the hand and led her away from the chair, taking her to the doctor's office.
- Yes, Dad, his name is Izuku, and he's really cool, — Nejire said enthusiastically, smiling with all her milk teeth. From behind the door frame, Doctor Akira appeared, calling for the daughter and father to enter the office.
- Mr. Hado, please come in, — he gestured toward the room. Nejire looked at Izuku with pleading eyes, hoping he wouldn't leave. Inko stood holding a folder with test results. She called out to Izuku, but he said something she never expected to hear from him.
- Mom, wait, let's wait for Nejire-san; we should wait for her.
Inko smiled demonstratively, forgetting what had happened five minutes ago, and sat next to him. To cheer up Izuku, Nejire said the following words.
- Thank you, Izuku. I promise that my examination will be quick, and we can play together.
Feeling proud of her friend, Nejire entered the doctor's office with a full heart, and her father closed the door behind her.
Meanwhile, while Izuku sat and waited for Nejire, Inko was discussing her and how nice she was, now a friend for her son. Inko was proud that despite the painful truth about Izuku, he still smiled, even through the pain. The reason for such a smile was her, and now Nejire, who had recently met her son, was added to the mix. Inko knew that quirkless people, due to their uniqueness, often lacked friends, and she was afraid that Izuku wouldn't have friends in the near future due to his strangeness compared to other children. But he found a friend; no, rather, she found him. Friends made in childhood become best friends in adolescence or adulthood, and Inko would do everything possible to preserve their friendship; after all, Izuku needed not only her support but also Nejire's support.
Ten minutes later, Nejire didn't just come out of the office; she burst out. Stepping into the hallway, she looked for Izuku, who was sitting some distance from the office door. Behind her, one could hear her father's disgruntled grumbling about his daughter's behavior, but he understood that there was nothing he could do about her assertive nature.
- Izuku!! Izuku!! — Nejire shouted, quickening her pace toward him. Izuku also got up from the chair and ran to her. Now Izuku was infected by her curiosity, which, like his smile, was contagious. A barrage of questions poured out from Nejire, and she, in turn, couldn't help but smile.
- Nejire, did they tell you what your quirk is? Is it cool? Can you show it to me? What type of quirk do you have?
Such questions left Nejire momentarily stunned, but she decided to simply show her energy wave emanating from her hands.
- Haha, look, Izuku.
Nejire extended her hands forward, and bright, sparkling energy waves danced from her palms. They twirled in the air, creating amazing patterns and colors that mesmerized. Izuku watched in awe, holding his breath.
- This is incredible! — he exclaimed, unable to believe his eyes. — How do you do that?
- I have a special quirk, — Nejire replied proudly. — I can manipulate energy! This allows me to create different waves and even use them in battle if needed.
- Wow, that's really cool! — said Izuku, his eyes shining with excitement. — I would love to learn something like that!
Nejire smiled, her eyes sparkling with happiness. She felt that a true connection had formed between them.
- Maybe one day I can teach you, — she offered, looking at him hopefully. — Although, of course, I don't know how it will be if you don't have a quirk.
- I believe that everyone can become a hero, even without a quirk, — Izuku said, recalling Nejire's words. His confidence strengthened, and he felt that there were many interesting moments ahead for him and Nejire.
At that moment, Inko approached them, clearly concerned that her son was so engrossed in conversation with Nejire.
- Izuku, you haven't forgotten about your studies, have you? — she asked, but her voice was filled with concern, not sternness.
- Mom, I... — Izuku began, but Nejire quickly interrupted.
- Don't worry, Auntie! I was just showing Izuku my quirk! He's so impressed!
Inko looked at Nejire, and her expression softened.
- Oh, I'm glad to hear that, Nejire. But still, Izuku, don't forget about your responsibilities.
- Of course, Mom, — Izuku replied, though deep down, he didn't want to leave Nejire. He felt that a true friendship had formed between them, and he didn't want it to end.
- Maybe we can meet later? — Nejire asked, her voice sounding hopeful.
- Yes, definitely! I really want to see you again, — Izuku replied, blushing and smiling.
Nejire nodded, and her eyes sparkled with joy.
- Great! Let's plan to meet. Maybe in the park?
- Yes, let's do it! — Izuku agreed, confident that this would be the beginning of something wonderful.
When Nejire left with her father, Izuku remained seated, lost in thought. He couldn't wipe the smile off his face and felt his heart fill with hope. New adventures awaited him, and perhaps a new friendship that would help him overcome all difficulties.
A few days passed, and Izuku eagerly awaited his meeting with Nejire. He thought a lot about her and how they could become true friends. On the day they finally met in the park, Izuku was filled with excitement.
- Hi, Izuku! — Nejire greeted him cheerfully as she ran up to him.
- Hi, Nejire! — he replied, feeling his heart race.
They began walking through the park, discussing their dreams and future plans. Nejire talked about her training and how she wanted to become a hero like her idols. Izuku listened to her, admiring her passionate eyes.
- And you? What are your dreams? — Nejire asked, stopping to look at him.
- I want to become a great hero, — Izuku said, his voice filled with determination. — I want to protect people and prove to everyone that you can be strong even without a quirk.
Nejire nodded, impressed by his resolve.
- I believe in you, Izuku! You can do it! — she encouraged him, and her words gave him strength.
They continued to chat and laugh, and at that moment, Izuku realized that his friendship with Nejire was giving him the strength he had been missing. He felt that now he had support, and that gave him confidence.
And so, their friendship was just beginning, and many adventures and challenges awaited them ahead. Izuku was full of hope and ready for new challenges, alongside Nejire, his new best friend.
To be continued.
