My hero academia:Am I worthy?

Chapter 20: Chapter 20. The beginning of the search

After getting out of bed, All Might headed to another office in the corridor. He barely managed to stand upright, leaning on the wall to avoid falling. The pain in his body and side was severe, to the point where his brain perceived the injury as the loss of vital organs. Nighteye supported All Might's left arm to help him reach the necessary office.

"All Might, stop; you're making it worse," Mirio said, supporting him. But All Might was reckless and never thought about himself, preferring to help others over his own well-being.

To somehow reach his idol, Nighteye said something All Might did not expect:

"All Might, your lung, liver, and part of your stomach were destroyed. You can no longer be a hero."

"I... I... Take me to Gran Torino, Mirio," All Might said. Each step was a pain accompanied by his assistant's displeasure, but this did not concern him. What mattered most was the condition of his mentor.

The door opened to a white office bathed in sunlight. In the room, Sorahiko lay wrapped in bandages under the care of Recovery Girl. Seeing the unexpected visitors, she sighed heavily, looking at Toshinori who was eager to reach his mentor.

"What are you doing, reckless young man? You shouldn't be moving around. Why didn't you stop him, Nighteye?" All Might started coughing up blood, staining the white floor with a crimson liquid, ruining the impression of a clean office. Unable to bear his self-destructive behavior, Recovery Girl brought a stool so he could finally sit in front of his mentor.

Gran Torino lay in a hospital gown, wrapped in bandages and without arms after the battle; a mechanical crutch replaced his broken ankle. His breathing was irregular and heavy; each breath was accompanied by a wheezing sound indicating that his body was at its limit. Recovery Girl had done everything she could, and even more, but the fact that he was still alive was a significant miracle.

"I'll leave you for five minutes and return later. You, young man, need to return to your bed; otherwise, you won't survive until the next heroic event," she said, leaving the office. She nudged Nighteye's leg with her cane as he stood by the door. Complying with her, he agreed and left the office.

"Toshinori... what happened?" Gran Torino found it difficult to speak; his lungs were weak, and his breathing was accompanied by spasms that caused pain in his heart. Despite this, he opened his eyes and saw All Might resting his forehead on the edge of the bed.

"I couldn't do it, sensei. I couldn't finish him off. When Todoroki and I made the final blow, I broke his head, but after the attack, I couldn't move, and he escaped," All Might said without lifting his head, despairing. But Gran Torino quickly brought him back to his senses.

"Lift your head, Toshi. I understand your bitterness from defeat, but this is not the time to cry," Gran Torino said. All Might lifted his head and looked into Gran Torino's tired eyes.

"Yes, you didn't finish him off, but he was too strong, and even with all our strength, it was practically impossible to defeat him. What comforts me is that you gave the world a peaceful time free from him," All Might understood that his mentor was trying to comfort him.

While he was recovering, All Might would never leave his post; he was, as they said, the Symbol of Peace who would dispel darkness no matter how dark it was.

"I understand that it hurts you that you couldn't do it, but we are all human, and each of us has a limit we strive to surpass. Our miscalculations give us more than results; they give us experience. Compared to me, you are young, and I have given you everything I know, just like Nana did," Gran Torino said.

It was painful for All Might to admit that he was not capable, but his mentor was right, and he did not dare interrupt him in any way.

"You are currently the strongest of all heroes, and you have no reason to lament your defeat. With great power comes a duty to all the people who made you All Might. People respect and honor you because you give them what no other hero can: 'hope'," Gran Torino said, trying not to cough.

The mentor's words were accepted by the student as wisdom for life, and becoming a pillar of peace for him was now not just a duty but also a debt to the people who had accompanied him throughout his journey.

"I, I... Thank you, sensei," All Might said, tears streaming down his cheeks. He could no longer hold back; the once-strongest man on earth now cried when he had promised everyone that his spirit would never be broken.

"Wipe away your tears, Toshinori. The burden of One For All you must not bear alone. As long as there are those who hate you, there will be those who will stand by your side no matter what. Do not blame yourself for not being able to do it; the feeling of guilt will haunt you as long as you pay attention to it," Gran Torino said.

Toshinori's heart now burned with a determined fire; he now had a goal to defeat the Symbol of Evil and bring light to young people whom the hands of One For All could never reach. His mentor was right; he had no right to slack off, for if he did not overcome this, he would be the last successor of One For All, the one who would end the two-century-long darkness once and for all.

"I am not an expert in Quirks, Toshinori, and I learned from Nana that she passed her Quirk to you. I want you to find a successor as soon as possible," Gran Torino said.

The mention of a successor caused a dissonance in Toshinori's mind; he himself was Quirkless and did not want to pass the Quirk to anyone, for it meant being an outcast among Quirkless society. Would his achievements remain or would society forget about his deeds in favor of new trends? The downside was that although he was a hero, he was far from his mentor, and he himself needed his mentor's help, for he too was imperfect with his own complexes.

Removing all doubts, All Might clenched his fist and resolutely looked out the window where the open blue sky shone, marking a clean slate for achieving peace.

"Do not let us down; we have given you everything we have. Be brave, Toshinori. Do not take too much upon yourself; let others show themselves. You are not the only pillar of this world," Gran Torino said.

The mentor's words ended, and now Gran Torino awaited an answer from All Might, who looked out the window and pondered what to say. Finally, overcoming the grief of defeat, he made his smile despite the pain in his cheeks.

"Sensei, I promise not to let you down. I will defeat All For One and create a new generation of heroes who will become the new pillars of peace and prosperity," All Might said.

Gran Torino was satisfied with these words to the extent that he relaxed and trusted him, leaning his head back into the pillow. After his words, All Might began to feel unwell, and medical robots burst into the room, grabbing All Might and forcing him to lie on a floating bed.

The robots took All Might back to his room and made him lie down and rest. Recovery Girl told him that he had recklessly ruined his health and that what disturbed his mind even more were the words that he could no longer be a hero without harming his health.

Hearing this information, Nighteye carefully wanted to choose his words to dissuade someone who never compromised with him.

"Can we be left alone for a moment? We have a very serious conversation, Recovery Girl," he said in a respectful manner so she would understand. She grudgingly snorted and left the infirmary, warning them that if they needed her help.

"Mirai, I know what you want," Nighteye said, showing him his palm to silence him and give him a word. Giving him the word, All Might regretted giving him such an opportunity.

After thinking it through, Nighteye decided to slowly but surely get to the heart of the conversation.

"You heard what she said, All Might: you are not destined to be a hero for the time being. I understand your responsibility as the Symbol of Peace, but understand that no matter how strong you are in spirit, you are just a human being," Nighteye's words struck All Might harder than any other blow after his conversation with Gran Torino.

While All Might was recovering, Nighteye realized that his rational arguments would not affect him.

"You still don't know much, Nighteye, and I will tell you everything, but first, I want to hear what you have to say. And what did you mean by saying I'm just a human being?" All Might sighed heavily with a gloomy expression, and Nighteye began to shake his mind by pressing on the levers of his confidence.

"You need to retire from being a hero. As painful as it is to admit, the fact remains. When I looked into your future before the battle, I was horrified by your death and did everything to prevent it. You would have died if I hadn't called Nezu in time," Nighteye said, wondering who Nezuko was and whether he was such a powerful person that he could summon all the heroes of Japan for a bloody battle against All For One.

The mention of Nezu was enough for someone to politely knock on the door. Turning his head towards the door, All Might looked at Nighteye, who simply nodded that the mentioned creature had arrived like death knocking on doors.

"Enter," said Nighteye.

"Hello, heroes," said Chimera, an embodiment of several animals combined, dressed in a stylish outfit and disproportionately large boots for his feet.

"Hello, I'm All Might."

"No need to introduce yourself, Toshinori; I know everything about you thanks to Nighteye's help," he said without wanting to talk further and cast a stern glance at his partner, who silently listened.

"So, I know what happened near Mount Fuji, and I was the one who mobilized most of Japan's forces. I am also aware of All For One," Nezu said, commanding with his tail, though small, but his intellect stood head and shoulders above most people. His appearance always radiated friendliness despite his dark past shrouded in mystery.

"No one knows about this except for the heroes and a few high-ranking officials. I want to know what happened after the monstrous energy burst; satellites could not capture any images of All For One," Nezu asked.

"He escaped. When Todoroki and I made the final blow, I broke his head, but after the attack, I was exhausted and couldn't move, and he escaped," All Might said, unsure if he was alive or dead but knowing that until his body was found, confirming his death was impossible.

"As long as it's not proven, it doesn't matter what is said," Nezu said with a smile but understood the situation with All Might, hiding his sympathy. Most people considered this chimera to be ruthless and immoral, but in reality, he had more humanity than most people. His colleagues noted his calmness and pragmatism, but he always thought about the consequences of his choices. Humanity is defined not by skin color but by actions and thoughts expressed. Although he was a director, he never let political connections hinder him. Seeing politicians then, he realized that people in politics had plans that made ordinary people feel ill thinking about what government officials were capable of. The person lying before him was a pawn thanks to whom heroes became stars, overshadowing other areas related to Quirks. Thanks to politicians' ambitions, they had pushed out all.Quirkless individuals, making them outcasts and unnecessary for society. According to their logic, a person who was unlucky with evolution had to suffer all his life for his survival, while others lived in abundance and prosperity, forgetting all this. They did not understand what a time bomb they had created.

My injuries are my business. My duty remains to stop All For One and his empire so that future generations can live in peace, not fearing for the next day, - All Might said lazily, as the sedative from the IV was acting. Partly, he understood that he wouldn't last long but refused to accept it.

Understand that if you leave now, you'll have more chances to find All For One and prepare, - Nighteye said, but Nezu decided to contribute to their conversation.

No, Nighteye, All Might cannot retire now. His departure would be a significant blow to society. The crime rate will increase, and as you know, many top heroes died in that battle. Creating a new top hero is a matter of time, which we are short on, - Nezu said, rubbing her chin. Nighteye felt uncomfortable with Nezu's statements; he could do little with her decision, and the fact that she stood by All Might meant that the Symbol of Peace would gradually diminish himself while the hero society was recovering.

What will the public say about the fallen heroes? - Nighteye asked, looking at Nezu. She returned to her friendly demeanor once again.

Don't worry; in the era of developing Quirks, replacements will be found for them. Those who died will be entered into the register of heroes as having died preventing serious criminal activity. We should not worry about this; what is more important is how to proceed with All Might? - said the cunning chimera, casting a questioning glance at All Might, who lay in calm contemplation but did not have time to open his mouth as Nezu interrupted with an even more uncomfortable question.

Hmm, tell me, All Might, how does your Quirk work? It is extremely intriguing, for if we look at your lineage, all the points do not match, - Nezu paused, jumped off the couch, and headed towards the exit. The two heroes did not understand what had happened and cast an uncomprehending glance at Nezuko.

Mr. Nezu, where are you going? We need to discuss this more thoroughly. All Might needs advice from the wisest being, - said Mirai.

Don't worry, Mr. Mirai; I'm just going to get my tea, - the door opened, and a medical robot entered the room with a tray of a teapot and cups.

Sir, your tea is ready, - replied the robot.

Thank you; you can go, - said Nezu, taking the tray. Mirai sighed heavily, rolling his eyes.

What's the point of talking if we follow the schedule for tea? Nighteye, would you like some tea? - Nezu politely offered, but he refused. Accepting this, Nezuko poured herself a cup of tea and began to drink. From her clever and calculating mind, it was hard to hide more than from All For One. Rubbing her tired mind, she decided to tell not only him but also her partner.

My Quirk is called One For All. It is the oldest Quirk, dating back to the time of the appearance of Quirks. When the Quirk of One For All appeared, so did All For One. As the eighth holder of this Quirk, I must use it to counter All For One, - Nezu found it so interesting that she decided to leave her cup of tea and listen to All Might, who told her that the government would have locked him up and interrogated him about his entire history. However, in response to the question about his Quirk, several questions arose in the mind of the cunning chimera. Nighteye was impressed by All Might's courage to tell him such a truth, which meant that despite their differences, he trusted him.

Interesting. So, the previous owner of this Quirk passed it to you. Do you know the other holders? And does this mean that it can be passed to someone else? - sipping his tea, All Might sighed heavily but decided to answer his questions. This Quirk can be passed through DNA, and the next successor will be the last owner of One For All. Choosing a successor will be the most responsible decision of my life, - All Might said, causing an unpleasant thought in the two heroes that people would fight over All Might's Quirk if they found out. But before asking a question, Mirio pondered, and his storm of thoughts was interrupted by Nezu, who asked a question that he least expected from the wisest being.

If you die without passing on this torch to your successor, does it mean that the Quirk will disappear forever? And what will happen if your main enemy acquires it? - The questions poured out like a burst dam, but All Might understood his concern and did not evade the questions, which provoked anger in Nighteye, who looked at him with a deadly gaze, since he had always worked with him and decided to reveal the truth when a major figure from the higher table of influential people arrived. This exposed him to the fact that his idol had secrets before his most devoted fan, but he accepted this fact with a heavy heart.

-The power will disappear forever if I die, and if the enemy acquires my Quirk, he will become so powerful that no one can oppose him, - Nezu finished her tea, her face expressing thoughtfulness and determination simultaneously.

-Our situation is not rosy, but before I make my decision, I would like to ask Mr. Nighteye about his Quirk, Precognition, - Nezuko now looked at Nighteye with a fierce smile. Nighteye, however, did not notice Nezuko's expression and answered his question dryly.

-My Quirk allows me to see the future of anyone I touch, and it will be unchanging. As for the limitation, my Quirk can be activated once every 24 hours, - Nighteye replied.

Have you used your Quirk today? - asked Nezuko.

No, - Nighteye answered, knowing that Nezuko would ask him to use his Quirk, and the result of the next actions slightly frightened Mirio.

So, I... - But Nezu interrupted All Might, surprising both of them.

-I Want You, Mirio, to Use Your Quirk on Me...

-I want you, Mirio, to use your Quirk on me and see what my future will be like, - Nighteye adjusted his glasses and placed his hand on All Might's still muscular arm. The result of the vision he saw was horrifying. There was no sign of what All Might had promised; the city was in ruins, buildings were burning, and heroes had fallen along with an emaciated, skeletal man with All Might's hair. It was terrifying to see that he was being held by the throat by a person with a unique Quirk, but there was no All For One there. The heroes lay on the ground, defeated, headless. At the forefront stood a person, or rather, someone who resembled a teenager in build but had somehow managed to defeat all the heroes single-handedly.

-You created me; I admired you. You became the figure I took as a father and mentor. But when I said I intended to change society, what did you do, All Might? - said the teenager, holding the frail All Might by the throat. His costume was black, with power armor inside, and on his chest was a white pattern with white lines and veins resembling a pulsating nervous system.

I'm sorry, young Midori, - but he was interrupted by aggressive white pupils that radiated anger and disappointment at All Might.

-You mocked me. All my aspirations, all my achievements, you considered the ravings of a fanatic. The dream I actively fought for, trying to prove to you that I was worth something, was destroyed by the one I believed in since childhood, - said the black mask with large white eyes that were not human, burning with a gaze that All Might could no longer resist.

- I wanted to protect you from all this, but I was wrong. Forgive me, young one.

- Don't call me that.

- I was too egotistical and didn't pay attention to you. I wanted more than anything for no one to repeat my mistakes. I was so blinded by others that I didn't notice who you had become and what I had created, - All Might said, gasping for breath due to the lack of air. But the young man was relentless; he wanted to express everything he felt towards his idol who had abandoned him like an unwanted doll, not considering him a person, mocking him in front of everyone, and because of whom the people he cared about most had died thanks to All Might. He was angry at his childhood idol and wanted only one thing: justice.

Crying every day due to his helplessness, he felt betrayed by all his friends who considered him a strong person but had all abandoned him, leaving him alone. Due to the anger in his heart, he could no longer bear all this and expressed everything he thought and wanted to know from his former idol.

- I WAS INSPIRED BY YOU FOR 15 YEARS, THINKING ANYONE COULD BE A HERO. TELL ME, DID YOU BELIEVE IN ME? I DID EVERYTHING TO BE A HERO FROM MY EARLIEST YEARS. I TRAINED UNTIL I BROKE EVERY BONE IN MY BODY. I BELIEVED LIKE A FOOL WHEN EVERYONE TOLD ME I WAS CRAZY!!!! - Pouring out all his emotions, he saw how the symbol of peace was slowly dying before his eyes. Before he died, he wanted to say the biggest mistake of his life.

- And what did you say then? - Overcoming his anger, he whispered softly. The unknown figure in the black costume began to acquire a terrifying appearance, gaining muscle mass and making All Might tremble even more than before.

- Unworthy.

- That's what you said to us, All Might, - The black tendrils began to wrap around All Might's body, ready to tear him into pieces. Seeing his terrifying face, which could be described as a horrific mask radiating primal horror, All Might felt immense fear.

The black skin, like an abyss, seemed to absorb light, creating a sense of emptiness. The giant mouth stretched into a menacingly wide smile, revealing sharp teeth arranged in a chaotic order. They gleamed in contrast to the darkness, as if ready to tear their target apart at any moment.

These two large white spots, slightly elongated and resembling drops, stretched out in rage. There were no pupils or soul in them, only boundless rage and hunger. They seemed to watch you, even if you tried to look away.

The long and flexible tongue with a sharp tip writhed out of the mouth like a living creature, adding to the image of a being from nightmares. Combined with the constant saliva dripping from the mouth, his face seemed even more beastly and wild.

This appearance left no doubt - before you was something inhuman, a product of chaos and power.

- I'm very sorry, - This was all All Might could say, lowering his gaze to avoid meeting the two white pupils.

The tendrils began to wrap around All Might's body, causing him excruciating pain until they tore his legs from his torso, leaving his intestines hanging. Satisfied with the silent pain of All Might, he momentarily removed his mask, revealing the face of the wearer, which radiated sadness and sorrow. Once an active child who wished for peace and kindness, he had become the one who brought grief to everyone and his idol, who felt sorry for the young man.

His smile turned to pain, and his heroism turned to anger. The green eyes that once showed care were now empty and dark, and this horrifying scene was added by the slowly disappearing face covered by rational flesh. Fully covering his face, he said the last sentence that Toshinori would hear.

- There is no reason to fear. Why?

Because I am here, - said the young man with a menacing voice, biting off All Might's head with a crunch, tearing it off and screaming at the sky with blood-stained teeth.

***

Nighteye, seeing this, was drenched in cold sweat after witnessing All Might's fate. Seeing the frightened expression on his partner's face, All Might also felt fear that he had lost the decisive battle. Nezuko observed the entire scene with sinister interest.

- I can't believe this is possible, - Nighteye said, trembling with lips and tears streaming from his eyes. Looking at his partner, he stood up with pain and hugged his partner, who did not calm down despite the strong arms embracing him.

- What happened, Nighteye? Answer us, -

- I don't believe this can be true, -

To be continued
