My Hero Academia: Tropic Thunder

Chapter 5: Quirk Apprehension Test.

...

-Kaminari POV-

All the students of 1-A are unique, for the first time each person has it's own thing going, there's not one who can go unnoticed, even the silent ones have some very noticeable quirks such as Shoji Mezo with arms for days and Tokoyami Fumikage with a literal bird head, really do wonder if his quirk is of an avian variety. Last but definitely not least is Todoroki Shoto, red-and-white haired with a abrupt burn scar on his face, I start to wonder if he has rough dad, cool uncle routine and if he hates bald people.

Teacher Aizawa -or should be Aizawa sensei?- organizes us to tests, not before threaten to expel the student with the worst results, very convincing. My first is 50 meter dash.

Ilda was first, his quirk is just as impressive as it was in Entrance exam as he cleared the test at 3.6 seconds. Froggy girl whose name is actually Asui Tsuyu and Uraraka went next, both did wonders as well. Aoyama did alright although his quirk apparentlly failed mid way, others went by and now it's my turn. Oh God...

Ever since I came here it's the first time I'm actually nervous, it's one thing to wreck robots in the middle of a mayhem, other is doing it while others are looking. My mind is going all places with every embarassing scenario coming in hard like a 18-wheeler. Taking a deep breath and focusing on the timer helped but Kirishima, Mina and Mashirao cheering gave me tranquility, I hope we can be a friend group.

One second before the timer sounds the electricity is already at my feet, for the first time in a long time I'm not scared to emmit my quirk, after years of training under Dad's tutelage now it's the time to see if it paid off or not. My hair, short dreadlocks with shaved sides, goes upwards, the dread's tips turn bright yellow until sparks are flying into the air and ground from my body turning small points of gravel into heated glass creating small fulgurites, all the collar allows me to emmit with all these restraints.

Timer goes off, what it felt like a mere step onwards abruptly sliding beyond the lane limits was but me finishing the dash in an instant. Breaking the speed to a full stop takes quite an effort, usually I break slowly.

"0.5 seconds" Too much, perhaps.

After loudly announcing, all eyes on me were a given. Even the cheering group were shocked at the result, a confident smile was all I could muster at this point. Making small talk as I go I briefly exchange looks with Todoroki, he turns away once I notice him.

Grip strength I can't rely on my quirk, using it to enhance strength on a whim ain't something I can just pull out my sleeve on the spot. Still managed to score 96kgs, above average I suppose. Repeated Side Steps I once again managed to get first place just above the sex offender Willow, Mineta Minoru. Also passed the Standing Long Jump by building enough electrical vibrations into momentum resulting in great jumping distance.

Kirishima and Mashirao were impressed at my results, I'm not used to people talking in a positive way about my quirk usage so I can't do anything but smile and be grateful for the comments. Cheerful comments coming from girls are even worse.

Going to the next course I accidentaly bumped into... floating clothes? What was me thinking I was having an insolation was me bumping to Hagakure Toru, a classmate with an invisible quirk. I deeply apologized and she happily accepted, we went on the next test making small talk together with Mina.

As we waited, Asui asked me "Kaminari, why did you come all the way to Japan to become a hero? Your quirk is unnusual for Hero jobs." Her direct and possibly intrusive question had a very good point.

Wanting to be a hero is accepting that you will be a subject of critics for any slip up you make, wages on average could barely cover a good health insurance and the threat of getting severely injured or even killed was high, that and the fact that your secret identity leaking out meant villains coming after your loved ones, we've all heard about the American Aracnid-Boy case. Some quirks are highly valued for the job market, mine was one of them, electricity based quirks are always sought and the pay is good, more than enough for a tranquil, stablished life.

"Family tradition, I'm following my father's steps like he did with his father before him." I said and it's no lie, my father became a hero because of my grandfather, but that's not the real reason. My family is well known in the energy business, my mother went back to her high end corporate position after the incident, I could just follow her steps and be filthy rich supplying the electric needs of an entire town by myself. Asui seemed to silently accept the answer.

...

-Narrator POV-

Aizawa called foward Kaminari Raio, his results are above average and his quirk is good so far in terms of versatility. He looked worried but confident whilst observing the ball. "He looks like he already knows what he's going to do, if he does what I'm expecting, he will be in the podium with no doubts." Aizawa thought to himself.

Kaminari grabbed the cold metal ball with his two hands, crossing his fingers, extended his arms and angled them at an almost perfect 45º angle, his right arm had sparks flying, his left one following next, soon all his body was emmiting electric discharges. "More." Kaminari thought as he amped the current, readying himself for the worst by hopelessly putting one foot behind the other.

"Just a littl-"

*BOOM*

The almost thunderous, near deafening sound blast that looked like artillery fire startled every person in the vicinity, not even Aizawa couldn't help but tremble at the instant loud bang. He looked at Kaminari but he was not inside the circle, but about three meters behind on the ground.

"This brat really did it, he made a railgun out of himself" Aizawa was thinking trying his best not to grin at such feat while walking towards Kaminari.

"Are you alright?"

"Yes, teacher, I overdid a bit." Kaminari answered also trying to his best to hide the feeling of pain. The backblast was too much to bear, his fingers were stinging, arms were stiff, shoulders sending pain signals, it's a wonder his shoulders are still in place.

They went back to the rest of the class, the feeling of awe conquered them all, louder than Bakugou's, stronger than Midoriya's, his performance served as a reminder that he's a cut above the rest. Not only is his quirk is versatile, his mastery over it made him one hell of a prominent student with a powerful quirk, one that may get him into the hall of the best heroes.

"What about my result, Sir?" Kaminari rebuked.

Aizawa looked at the distance marker.

"The ball's still in the air?" Aizawa muttered, a few more moments of waiting made not just Kaminari, but everyone anxious.

"108.2 km".

"Woooooah" loudly roared from class 1-A. The wide smile from ear to ear couldn't be held, Kaminari was proud of the result. "Thank you, Sir!"

The next tests weren't quirk required but more endurance based, good thing his body is up to date with physical so he did okay on them as well, pain and all.

The tests were over and results were in shortly. "Second place, huh?" Kaminari is satisfied given how much effort he put on. "Yaoyorozu Momo got first, makes sense." He follows up as he looks at Yaoyorozu Momo talking about Aizawa's bluff of expeling students, much to Midoriya's dismay, her creativity to create so many inventions through her quirk denounces her wits and knowledge.

"How long will you two wait until you go to the infirmary?" Aizawa loudly said refering to Midoriya and Kaminari, both made their way together with no rebukes.

...

-Kaminari POV-

"Kinda embarassing to be the only ones injured, not gonna lie" I had to say something, Midoriya's silence was unbeareable to withstand while we waited for the nurse.

"Y-yeah... Yours is worse than mine" Midoriya giggled a little as he spoke. "Hahaha indeed" and he was right. His finger was very bruised but I had fingers, as in plural, in bad shape. The stiffness was less painful than on the field but my shoulders were still bad. "You used a Railgun concept to lauch the ball, didn't you?" His direct follow up was not shy or timid, he spoke with enthusiasm.

"Y-yeah, I did, I'm kinda of a fan of the whole idea."

"So you used an electric current to create a electromagnetic field to accelerate the ball along your arms..." He started to mutter like he wasn't talking to me but to himself, while also mimicing writing on a book.

"Yes! I use the Right-hand rule and Lorentz force to propel the ball onwards, the amount of force depends on how much current I generate." I continued.

This follow up looked like it snapped him out of the murmuring trance. He looked at me vividly.

"The downside is that I'm not Newton's third law immune, so the recoil is too much to handle."

"The backblast was indeed strong, but you still held back a considerable amount of force." Midoriya presumed.

"You know a lot about the electrics field, Midoriya, I'm impressed. Yours is pretty curious too, how does yours work? Kinectic based?" I'm very curious about his quirk indeed, the amount of force generated to propel him meters in the air, destroy the giant robot with one punch and hurl a ball almost a kilometer away with a finger was no small feat.

He got nervous all the sudden and spoke what I assume was gibberish, either he doesn't know how to behave when he's on the spotlight or he doesn't want me to know about it.

...

"You're good, love, no need for medical attention." The wonderful granny said, Recovery Girl is a very gentle lady in charge of the medical bay, she dismissed me and went to look after Midoriya. "Thank you, Recovery Girl, I will be on my way then. Bye Midoriya" I waved to both as go back to the lockeroom to change clothes and go home, I just can't wait to tell Ana about today.

Back home my head is spinning about all I did, people now have taken notice of me, I have to keep it leveled, can't underperform now. Not even the unnanswered calls from Dad and Mom could make me sad, we celebrated by eating pizza.

"Maybe I could train to use this as a power move..." Nah, there's no way I can do it without catching a murder case, too much power. "Railgun would be a good name. Midoriya's knowledge about quirk usage is outstanding, perhaps I can think about something to help him with his once I get to know how it works."
