Chapter 3: Chapter 3: The Shadow of Wealth
Ethan's life became increasingly complicated after meeting Olivia's family.
Olivia took him to a family gathering held at a private estate. Every detail of the place exuded understated yet exquisite luxury, as if it were a microcosm of another world. The garden lights were soft, the sound of the fountain trickled gently, and the guests, dressed in elegant attire, moved with impeccable grace.
Although Ethan had prepared himself, stepping into this world still made him feel out of place. He noticed how effortlessly Olivia navigated the scene, seamlessly engaging with everyone present, her words always perfectly measured. She was no longer just a project manager at an ordinary company—she was a natural socialite, someone who truly belonged at the heart of high society.
"Miss Olivia, it's been a long time."
A middle-aged man in a well-tailored suit approached, holding a glass of wine, his expression polite and reserved. Ethan recognized him as a director of an international investment fund—his name frequently appeared in the news.
"Mr. Zhao, it has been a while," Olivia responded with a slight smile, clinking her glass against his.
Ethan stood quietly beside her, observing. The guests showed little interest in him, the "ordinary man." Their conversations revolved around business, investments, and global markets—fields he had never deeply engaged in.
As he worked to adapt to the atmosphere, a man dressed in a white suit slowly approached.
"Olivia, long time no see." His voice carried a lazy hint of amusement.
Ethan looked up at him. The man appeared to be in his early thirties, with strikingly handsome features and an aristocratic elegance in his demeanor. However, there was a trace of contempt in his gaze.
"Miss Olivia, you look more stunning than ever tonight," the man said, lifting his glass slightly, his eyes lingering on her with a meaningful expression.
Ethan frowned slightly. Olivia?
Olivia smiled faintly, her expression unchanged. "Mr. Loren, it really has been a while. It seems you've been doing quite well in Europe lately?"
Loren chuckled softly and then turned his gaze to Ethan, the corners of his lips curling with subtle mockery. "And this is…?"
"My husband, Ethan," Olivia introduced him calmly.
Loren raised an eyebrow and let out a quiet "Oh," before offering a knowing smile. "I see. I've heard a lot about you, Mr. Ethan."
Ethan could detect the sarcasm in his tone but merely nodded indifferently. "Nice to meet you."
Loren took a sip of his wine, his smirk unwavering. "Olivia, I must say, your taste is quite unexpected."
Ethan was about to speak, but Olivia had already replied coolly, "Mr. Loren, taste isn't measured by wealth. Otherwise, by your standards, I wouldn't even spare you a glance."
Loren's expression flickered slightly before he chuckled. "Still as sharp as ever, Olivia."
"I simply don't like listening to nonsense," Olivia remarked, lifting her glass to lightly clink against his. "Besides, my husband doesn't need anyone else's judgment."
A shadow passed through Loren's eyes, but he quickly regained his composed demeanor. "Of course. Miss Olivia's choices are beyond question."
Ethan listened from the side, and a warmth spread through his heart. He never cared about others' opinions of him, but Olivia's unwavering stance reassured him—no matter what, she was always on his side.
After the gathering, they were invited to an exclusive business dinner. The event was held at a top-tier private club, where every dish served was of world-class quality, and the wine selection featured rare, premium vintages.
Ethan sat beside Olivia, watching her engage in effortless conversations with the guests, while he quietly adapted to his surroundings. Throughout the evening, he could feel many eyes on them.
"Olivia, your husband looks a little uncomfortable," a voice suddenly remarked.
Ethan glanced up at the speaker—a middle-aged man in a tailored suit, his tone carrying a hint of amusement.
Olivia smiled faintly. "It takes time to adapt to different environments."
The man chuckled and continued, "After all, this circle is quite different from an ordinary workplace. Mr. Ethan, do you feel a little out of place here?"
Ethan frowned slightly, about to respond, but Olivia spoke first, her smile unwavering. "Mr. Li, the project you invested in last month doesn't seem to be going too smoothly, does it?"
Mr. Li's expression shifted, and his playful tone disappeared instantly.
Olivia continued, "In this circle, adapting to the environment is important, but even more important is… knowing what you're talking about."
Ethan watched Olivia, a complex emotion stirring in his heart.
She never used aggressive words, yet she could always make others back down with ease. Her ability to control the situation made Ethan realize—she was far stronger than he had ever imagined.
After the dinner, Ethan took Olivia's hand.
"Olivia…" he murmured.
"What is it?" she turned to him.
Looking at her, all the hesitation and uncertainty he had felt before completely disappeared in that moment.
"I just wanted to say… No matter what happens in the future, you are the woman I will love for the rest of my life."
Olivia was momentarily stunned, then smiled gently.
"You fool." She tightened her grip on his hand, her gaze filled with warmth and determination.
However, neither of them knew that after this seemingly peaceful evening, the real storm was only just beginning.
Ethan gradually realized that Olivia's family was far from as peaceful as it appeared.
A hidden enemy, an impending business war, and an unexpected mysterious rival—everything was about to change their fate forever…
