Chapter 445: [443] The Invitation
An entire week had passed, and Kojou had not returned to school.
Being defeated by August was one thing, but as the Fourth Primogenitor, to have his newly awakened Familiar defeated by a mere girl? It was a humiliation too great to bear.
The experience had left Kojou deeply shaken. The fact that Yukina Himeragi, a girl not only in the same grade but the same class as his sister, Nagisa, had bested him only made it worse.
And so, the Fourth Primogenitor, Kojou, had locked himself away, wallowing in isolation.
At Saikai Academy, the atmosphere in Natsuki Minamiya's office was anything but quiet. The spacious and well-furnished room, typically a haven of calm, felt crowded today. Natsuki herself, along with August, Yukina Himeragi, Sayaka Kirasaka, and Kanon Kanase, filled the room.
"August, just what are you planning?" Natsuki asked, her tone a mix of exasperation and suspicion.
"Hmm? Planning? Nothing in particular. Just having a bit of fun," August replied with a casual shrug. "The world is far too interesting to let it go to waste."
"Fun? Kojou hasn't left his house because of you. That's your idea of fun?"
"That guy? He's sulking over something like this?" August's smirk deepened, his tone laced with disappointment. "How pathetic."
To August, the immense power of the Fourth Primogenitor being wasted on someone like Kojou was nothing short of a tragedy.
But then again, August mused, Kojou had only ever been an ordinary high schooler before fate thrust the mantle of the Fourth Primogenitor upon him. Perhaps it wasn't surprising that he couldn't bear the weight.
Sometimes, August found himself tempted to claim the power of the Fourth Primogenitor for himself. Such strength didn't belong in the hands of someone so weak. Besides, in any world, hidden quests always existed, and eliminating the protagonist was undoubtedly one of them.
At that moment, a small bird-like shikigami flew in through the open window. It landed gracefully on Natsuki's desk before transforming into an envelope bearing a distinctive crest.
August didn't recognize the emblem, but the others clearly did—especially Natsuki, whose expression turned grave.
"That snake charmer is here on Itogami Island?" she muttered, her voice laced with irritation.
The envelope was an invitation, sent by none other than Dimitrie Vattler, a vampire noble from the Warlord's Empire—an ally of the First Primogenitor.
Dimitrie Vattler, Duke of Ordialu, was infamous for his power and ruthlessness. He was known as the vampire closest to the rank of a Primogenitor, having devoured two elder vampires to further his strength.
Natsuki knew Vattler all too well. Their paths had crossed many times—whether during her missions as an Attack Mage or during the infamous "Blazing Banquet" incident. To her, Vattler was nothing more than a lunatic obsessed with battle for battle's sake.
Most troubling of all, Vattler had an insatiable hunger for power. Like many vampires, he sought to strengthen himself either through long lifespans and consuming blood—or by devouring his kin. Vattler had chosen the latter path, making him even more dangerous.
Opening the envelope, Natsuki scanned the contents with a scowl.
The letter was simple. Vattler had arrived on Itogami Island and was hosting a banquet. He invited Natsuki, the infamous "Witch of the Void," to attend. And, to her dismay, he had also extended the invitation to August—the mysterious newcomer whose presence had already caused ripples across the supernatural world.
Although the Lion King Organization had tried to suppress information about August, it was too late. His name had already reached the ears of powerful figures worldwide, including the three Primogenitors.
August's repeated victories over the current Fourth Primogenitor, Kojou, had only amplified his reputation. For better or worse, the world now knew of him—and the attention of someone like Dimitrie Vattler was a dangerous consequence.
"Are you planning to attend the banquet, Natsuki-chan?"
"Do you want to go?" Natsuki asked, narrowing her eyes at August.
"Dimitrie Vattler, huh? He's strong. He might make for a decent punching bag," August replied with a mischievous grin.
"Fine. If you're interested, I'll accompany you," Natsuki said, her lips curling into a small smirk.
She couldn't help but feel a spark of anticipation at the thought of August confronting Vattler. For years, she'd harbored the desire to take that snake down herself. But Vattler's status, power, and her own position had always kept her from acting on it.
"By the way, Natsuki-chan, do you think Kojou will receive an invitation as well?" August asked, his tone casual.
"Of course. No matter how inexperienced or reluctant he might be, Kojou is still the Fourth Primogenitor. Certain formalities can't be ignored," Natsuki replied, folding her arms.
"Perfect. It'll be interesting to meet him again at the banquet," August said, his tone laced with amusement.
"What are you plotting this time?" Natsuki asked, her sharp gaze fixed on him.
"My Familiar. Ever since I forged the contract, I haven't had the chance to use it," August said with a playful grin.
"Don't even mention Familiars! You're not even a vampire, yet you can control them. What kind of monster are you, really?" Natsuki muttered, shaking her head.
The more she interacted with August, the more his secrets seemed to deepen. He wasn't a vampire, yet his abilities rivaled—or perhaps even surpassed—those of immortal creatures. Every attempt to unravel his mysteries only left her with more questions.
"August-niisan, can I come to the banquet too?" Kanon Kanase asked hesitantly, her wide eyes filled with curiosity.
"Of course. If I bring anyone, it'll be my Kanon," August said with a warm smile.
"Thank you, August-niisan!" Kanon beamed, her innocent joy lighting up the room.
Natsuki, watching the scene, clicked her tongue in annoyance. "What a shameless guy," she muttered under her breath.
Kanon was only fourteen, yet August's easy charm had already captivated her completely. To Natsuki, this was just another example of how brazenly audacious August could be.
Meanwhile, Yukina Himeragi and Sayaka Kirasaka had remained silent throughout the conversation. Among those present, their status was the lowest—they were, effectively, no more than servants.
Yukina, as August's chosen enforcer, was somewhat exempt from this dynamic, though. Her position as the wielder of August's artifact elevated her standing slightly.
Sayaka, on the other hand, had a harder time. Her personality, combined with her loyalty to the Lion King Organization, often put her at odds with August. She always found herself on the losing end, whether it was in arguments or outright confrontations.
Every day, Sayaka swore to get revenge on him. August's infuriating smugness and teasing demeanor only fueled her determination. Yet, without realizing it, she'd started to feel less antagonistic toward him.
Little by little, she found herself no longer fully resisting August's overwhelming presence.
