Chapter 26: Chapter 26 - Minions
The stone door groaned loudly as it opened, the sound reverberating through the chamber like a warning.
A strange sound reached Wang Zi's ears:
"plop, plop" a thick, wet noise, followed by the faint echo of slow, deliberate steps. Wang Zi frowned, his sharp senses on high alert.
"Water dripping?" he muttered, his brows furrowing.
Then it hit him... The stench.
A wave of putrid air flooded the room, thick and rancid, like a mix of rotting flesh and toxic chemicals. Wang Zi's nose crinkled, and he instinctively took a step back.
From the dark tunnel, a figure emerged. It moved with a grotesque fluidity, its four muscular legs pulling it forward.
The lower half of its body resembled a lizard's, its claws digging into the stone floor with each step.
But its upper body was worse... A hulking mass of muscle, with two jaws lined on top of each other, filled with razor-sharp teeth. Its head had a vaguely wolf-like shape, but its warped features gave it an alien, nightmarish look.
Black goo oozed from its body, writhing and shifting as though alive, pooling onto the ground and then crawling back up its form.
The beast let out a low growl, a guttural sound that sent a prickling sensation racing up Wang Zi's spine.
The crowd in the plaza recoiled collectively, their cheers turning to gasps of disgust.
"What... is that thing?!"
"Gross! It's covered in that black gunk!"
Wang Zi stood his ground, his frown deepening as he examined the creature. His instincts screamed at him to be cautious.
"What the actual fuck...?" he muttered, his grip tightening on his blade.
The goo seemed to shift unnaturally, warping around the beast's body like a living entity. Just looking at it sent a strange, almost invasive sensation into his mind, like an itch he couldn't scratch.
"So this is what the actual test is about huh." Wang Zi said, as he observed the creature.
In the observation room, the Awakener Academies and the principals of Earth-27's academies showed no surprise.
"A Putrid Fang Wolf," one of the silhouettes said, their voice cold.
"Interesting. So the competition is incorporating Silent Ones' minions now," another added, their tone contemplative.
Lulu tilted her head slightly. "Although they're not ready for this yet, its better to let them get used to it. They're our real enemies after all..."
The others said nothing, apparently agreeing with her.
In the audience section, Principal Anton's face turned grim. He stroked his beard nervously, his jovial demeanor fading. "A Silent One's minion... They're using those in the competition now?"
Back in the cave, Wang Zi felt that the creature was about to make its move.
And he wasn't wrong.
"SKREEEEEECH!"
The Putrid Fang Wolf snarled, its grotesque, gaping jaw splitting open, revealing two rows of layered, jagged teeth.
Black goo dripped and waved erratically around its hulking green form, pooling on the floor only to rise again, reshaping into claws and tendrils that twitched with menacing intent.
The goo hissed and bubbled where it landed, eating into the stone.
Wang Zi's eyes narrowed. "Acid? Great," he muttered sarcastically.
The beast's four legs tensed, and it charged forward with surprising speed for its size. The ground trembled under its weight, and its four massive claws swung at the air as it closed the distance to Wang Zi.
Wang Zi tightened his grip on his sword, and started the Sun Breathing method, flames immediately covering his figure.
"Great," he muttered, sidestepping cautiously as the wolf's massive legs stomped closer,
"Not only does it spit acid, but it can use that goo for surprise attacks... And it has something that's constantly poking at my head."
Even with his incredible mental defenses, Wang Zi couldn't fully ignore the beast's invasive presence. The prickling sensation clawing at his mind was relentless, like a swarm of invisible insects burrowing into his thoughts.
Without warning, the wolf lunged forward, its four legs propelling its massive frame with terrifying speed.
"CLACK!"
Its layered jaws snapped shut just inches from Wang Zi's head as he ducked low and rolled to the side.
"Too slow," Wang Zi muttered, his reflexes carrying him out of range. But his confidence was short-lived.
"SHRIEEEK!" The goo on the ground surged upward, forming sharp claws that slashed at his blind spot. Wang Zi twisted mid-roll, barely avoiding the attack, but a tendril of black goo caught his sleeve, yeeting him back toward the beast.
"Damn it!" he growled, slashing at the tendril with a flaming arc.
"Sun Breathing, Dance!"
The flames seared through the goo, forcing it to retreat, but the wolf was already on him again, its claws swinging down.
"THWACK! THWACK!" Wang Zi parried the strikes, sparks flying as the beast's strength pushed him back step by step.
"Son of a-! Strong!" Wang Zi's eyebrows shot up in surprise.
Wang Zi then steadied himself, flames surging along his blade as he went on the offensive.
"Sun Breathing, Solar Heat Haze!" he roared, delivering a swift, fiery slash across the wolf's side.
The flames burned brightly, but the wolf's green hide merely hissed and sizzled, the wounds closing almost as soon as they appeared. Black goo poured over the regenerating flesh, reinforcing the beast's defenses.
"What the-?!" Wang Zi muttered, his eyes narrowing. "Regeneration? You've got to be kidding me."
"No wonder it asked how long I could last... Hahaha! Good, good!" Wang Zi was actually starting to enjoy this.
The wolf ignored his laughing, its maw splitting wide again as it spewed a torrent of acid.
"SPLATTER!"
Wang Zi leapt upward, the corrosive liquid narrowly missing him and melting through the stone floor.
"That's annoying as hell," he thought, flipping in midair to avoid another claw swipe.
The wolf's goo shifted, forming multiple spikes and claws that lashed out simultaneously, forcing Wang Zi to twist and dodge in rapid succession.
The wolf growled low, its black goo expanding outward like a wave. Tendrils shot out from the pool, attacking from every direction. Wang Zi spun, flames trailing his sword as he slashed through the incoming strikes.
"Sun Breathing, Clear Blue Sky!"
But the 360 degree slash didn't stop the wolf for long, it was relentless. One tendril feinted high while another struck low, catching Wang Zi off guard.
"WHAM!"
The blow sent him flying backward, slamming into the cave wall with a deafening crack. Smoke and dust exploded outward, obscuring the chamber.
"Gah! Motherfucker!"
Wang Zi groaned, his body aching as he pushed himself up from the rubble.
"SKREEEEE!" The wolf let out a triumphant howl, its form looming through the smoke, waiting for Wang Zi.
The audience outside was stunned into silence, their earlier cheers replaced by murmurs of disbelief.
"He got hit! Did you see that?!"
"Is that fatty done for?!"
"That thing's too strong!"
In the observation room, Alexander leaned forward, his golden eyes locked onto Wang Zi's form hidden in the smoke.
"What now?" he murmured, his voice low.
Ray, seated beside him, crossed his arms and smirked faintly.
Wang Zi emerged from the smoke, his eyes sharp and blazing with fury. His blade was still in hand, flames reigniting along its edge with renewed intensity.
"Alright," he muttered, his voice cold. "I was trying to play nice, but you just had to piss me off."
The wolf growled, its goo shifting and warping as it prepared for another assault.
"You think you're hot shit because you can regenerate huh? We'll see what's faster, you regenerating or me kicking your ass!" Wang Zi was really pissed.
Even back in is last life, he barely ever got hit due to his enhanced reflexes. But this wolf thing had to strike from his blind spots and the goo on the ground, and Wang Zi didn't want to reveal the Rinnegan yet.
Wang Zi tightened his grip on the hilt, his breathing steadying as he tapped deeper into his mana reserves. The flames around him burned hotter, brighter, the very air shimmering with heat.
"Fuuuuu..." He exhaled a tongue of fire, before inhaling an insane amount of fire mana, the flames around him surged and erupted, forming a blazing cloak that seemed almost alive.
The air in the chamber thickened with heat, the stone walls trembling faintly under the sheer pressure of his presence.
"Get ready to dance, you little shit!" Wang Zi roared, his voice echoing through the room.
His massive frame moved like a comet, a blur of fire and fury that left a burning red trail in his wake. The Putrid Fang Wolf stood its ground, its grotesque jaws splitting into a mocking, human-like grin. It seemed utterly unbothered, its goo rippling and warping as if preparing to absorb whatever Wang Zi could throw at it.
But then it saw Wang Zi smile - the grin of someone who had already won.
The wolf's confidence faltered, a flicker of unease crossing its warped features.
"SKREEEEEE-!"
It didn't get to finish its screech. Wang Zi's blade ignited with blinding intensity as he launched himself forward.
"Get ready you stupid beast, and the ones watching outside, witness the pinnacle of power in the Demon Slayer world, the real Sun Breathing!"
Wang Zi raised his sword high, the flames wrapping around it like a divine serpent. His voice was a thunderous roar as he unleashed the ultimate move of Sun Breathing:
"Hinokami Kagura: Thirteenth Form!"
The flames exploded outward, encompassing the entire chamber in a fiery maelstrom. The Putrid Fang Wolf's black goo hissed and bubbled violently as the flames licked at it, unable to regenerate fast enough to keep up with the onslaught.
Wang Zi's movements were relentless, each strike flowing seamlessly into the next. He wove through the chamber like a blazing whirlwind, his blade dancing with precision and power.
"Dance of the Fire God!" he bellowed, slashing upward in a fiery arc that tore through the wolf's front legs.
"Clear Blue Sky!" The next strike came from below, cleaving a huge gash into the wolf, in a single fluid motion.
The wolf howled in agony, its goo desperately trying to reform its limbs, but Wang Zi didn't stop.
"Burning Bones, Summer Sun!" His blade spiraled downward, carving into the wolf's carapace with enough force to shatter its iron-like exterior.
The plaza outside fell silent, the sheer spectacle of the flames and Wang Zi's unrelenting strikes leaving the crowd breathless.
"Holy shit he's going crazy!!"
"How can a fatass move like that!?"
Feifei sat frozen, and suddenly she screamed, her voice trembling with excitement. "Fatty Zi just went full god mode! LOOK AT HIM! Wow if he wasn't so fat he'd be my male god!!!"
In his private room, Alexander shot up from his chair, his wide eyes glued to the screen. His golden gaze followed every one of Wang Zi's movements, disbelief written across his face.
"Impossible..." he muttered, his voice barely audible. "He's molding mana perfectly, breathing a fighting, a perfect breathing method!"
Beside him, Ray smirked faintly, his eyes also never leaving Wang Zi.
In the observation room, the silhouettes of the Awakener Academies leaned forward in unison, their interest palpable.
"That... That's not just combat skill," one voice murmured. "That's mastery."
"He's channeling mana perfectly," another added. "And his stamina - it's not depleting at all. How is he doing that?"
Lulu's voice was sharp with intrigue. "He's combining a breathing method with direct mana absorption. That's unheard of."
One silhouette chuckled softly. "I want that student in my academy. Whatever it takes."
"SKREEEEEE!"
The Putrid Fang Wolf, now reduced to a limping, goo-covered mess, let out a final, desperate howl. Its regeneration slowed, the black goo unable to keep up with the flames consuming its body.
Wang Zi's attacks didn't stop, his flames flaring brighter than ever as he prepared the finishing strike.
"Sun Breathing, Flame Dance! Die!" he roared, his voice cutting through the wolf's screeches.
His blade moved in a fiery spiral, carving through the beast's body and splitting it in two with surgical precision.
Wang Zi exhaled slowly, the flames around him fading as he sheathed his blade.
"Fuuu... First time I actually felt satisfied in this world! I guess fighting really is the only way I feel alive!" Wang Zi was happy he finally had a decent fight. He looked back as the flames erupted one final time, consuming the wolf entirely until there was nothing left but ash.
The audience erupted into chaos, their cheers deafening.
"HE DID IT!"
"HE KILLED THAT THING!"
In the observation room, the Awakener Academies exchanged glances, their earlier skepticism replaced with genuine admiration.
"That boy," one voice said, "the wolf wasn't supposed to be killed..."
Wang Zi wiped the sweat from his brow, his smirk returning as he glanced at the empty chamber.
"It would have been easier if I didn't have this type of body restricting me at the moment... But it won't be for much longer anyways." He looked at the stone gate, but it seemed there were no more challenges.
"Endurance, huh?" he muttered. "Looks like I've got plenty to spare."
As Wang Zi finished muttering to himself, the room around him shimmered and blurred. Before he could even take another breath, the familiar sensation of teleportation took hold, and in the blink of an eye, he found himself back in the plaza.
The deafening roar of the audience hit him like a tidal wave.
"FATTY ZI! FATTY ZI!"
The chant reverberated through the air, shaking the ground beneath him.
Wang Zi's brows twitched in irritation as he looked around, trying to figure out what had triggered the uproar. It didn't take him long to realize that he was the center of attention.
"FATTY ZI FOR THE WIN!"
"THE KING OF FLAMES!"
"BULK AND POWER COMBINED!"
Wang Zi sighed, running a hand down his face. "Why does it have to be 'Fatty Zi?'" he muttered to himself, feeling a mix of amusement and exasperation.
A particularly loud audience member shouted, "HE'S GOT THE SPEED OF A CHEETAH AND THE APPETITE OF A LION!"
Another chimed in, "FATTY ZI IS UNSTOPPABLE! WHO NEEDS ABS WHEN YOU HAVE FLAMES?!"
"These people..." Wang Zi's brows twitched even more, his face darkening slightly.
