Chapter 18: Eleanor's Obsession
Zephyrine stared at Richard attentively. Speaking with him had been on her mind, but Kendrick's constant presence discouraged her.
As Richard approached, Kendrick's gaze narrowed, his eyes flashing with disdain for the man. It was not a new thing to Richard, but now it seems like the hatred Kendrich has for him has skyrocketed. He gave Richard a cold, dismissive look before turning to Zephyrine.
"I'll be outside," he said curtly, his voice dripping with authority.
Outside the ward, Kendrick spotted the person who was looking for him easily. She wasn't someone he particularly cared about, but her connection to Zephyrine made her tolerable.
Eleanor's eyes sparkled with admiration as she approached Kendrick. "I've brought your favorite dish," she said, holding out a food flask. "I spent hours cooking it just for you."
Kendrick raised the corner of his lip in a cold snicker. His favorite? How come? There is no way, a nobody like Eleanor would know his favorite. Those who are close to him barely know anything about him talking of someone he doesn't know exists.
Kendrick could read the expression on her face without thinking much. Her gaze lingered on Kendrick's face, filled with a mix of love and adoration. Kendrick's expression remained impassive, but he accepted the flask.
"Thank you, Ms. Cloutier," he said shortly, his voice devoid of emotion. Eleanor couldn't get a hint of what was going on in his brain. But she was happy that he accepted the food flask, and thanked her for it. It seems like her plan was going the way she planned it.
"Zephyrine will appreciate it."
Eleanor's face fell slightly, and her expression turned awfully intolerable. "I made it for you and I want you to be the one to eat it…not Zephyrine." She muttered the last part to herself, but she was sincere. She ordered the food with love.
Kendrick's eyes flickered with annoyance, but he struggled to maintain his composure. His anger is not what Eleanor would wish to see now.. He said nothing and turned around to leave, but on turning, he saw Nathaniel trying to sneak into the ward. Nathanielust take him for a fool.
Ever since Kendrick had been speaking with Eleanor, his mind has been on alert. He stared at him with nothing in mind to do. He felt like throwing him off the fifteenth floor of the hospital, but he didn't want anyone to portray as a murder, though he wouldn't care what anyone thinks about him.
Nathaniel stopped, biting his lip as he realized he'd been caught. The air in the corridor was so cold and awkward. After standing for seconds without saying anything, Nathaniel began to wonder why he was scared of Kendrick. He came to the hospital on the request of Zephyrine, so why should he be afraid? He straightened his back and walked confidently into the room.
Eleanor took advantage of the moment and feigned a fall. She fell straight in the direction of Kendrick, as a result, the flask fell from her hand and dripped on the floor. The food spilled everywhere, while Eleanor was only alive due to the fact that she was able to hold the tip of Kendrick's shirt in time. She didn't expect the situation to turn bad like that.
Inspired by the romance novels she'd read, Eleanor decided to try her hand at manipulation. But then she realized that she was not so smart, like the female leads in those stories that she'd read.
Kendrick's brow creased with anger as he removed her hand from his clothes with his handkerchief. Though the food spilled on the floor, it splashed on his clothes.
Kendrick's face darkened, his eyes blazing with fury. His jaw clenched, and a vein pulsed in his temple. The air around him seemed to vibrate with tension.
"Get your hands off me," he growled, his voice low and menacing.
As he removed Eleanor's grip from his shirt, his handkerchief absorbed the spill, but his gaze remained fixed on Nathaniel, who had just entered the room.
Eleanor's staged fall only added fuel to Kendrick's anger.
"Pathetic," he spat, turning back to Eleanor. "You think this childish trick would work on me?"
His words cut through the air like a knife, leaving Eleanor's face pale and stricken.
"Your games are beneath me," Kendrick continued, his tone dripping with disdain. "Don't waste my time."
With that, he stormed off, leaving Eleanor wailing in pain, clutching her ankle.
The sound of Kendrick's footsteps echoed down the corridor, growing fainter with each passing moment. Eleanor's cries faded into the background as Kendrick disappeared from view.
Eleanor's wails turned to sobs, her face streaked with tears. She had miscalculated, and now her plan lay shattered.
"Why?" she whispered, her voice barely audible. "Why doesn't he care?"
As she rocked back and forth, cradling her ankle, her eyes welled up with tears reflecting the anguish and desperation within.. What charm does Zephyrine possess that she doesn't have? Undeterred, Eleanor promised to persist in her pursuit. Kendrick was the cream of the country and she can't lose to her step sister.
Despite the scrutinizing pain she felt in her ankle, she stood up and left the messy place. The nurses looked at her with disgust, no wonder the man was disdained with her touch.
Eleanor knew she had to brief her mother on the debacle, and together, they'd devise a more sinister plan.. Eleanor came to the hospital with thought in mind to console Kendrick. So she decided to bring a food flask so that they wouldn't discover her plan.
She met Nathaniel at the hospital and she got to know that Zephyrine was totally fine. She was abfered but she moved to plan B which didn't turn out like she wanted either. Now that her plan didn't work, she was still disabled. She wished to see Zephyrine and tell her how much she hated and wanted whatever was hers, but better late than never. She would show her response with her big plan that would be coming up next.
It would have been better if Eleanor stayed in the hospital as a patient, but she was blinded by her love for Kendrick.
