Chapter 2: Exposed
The lunch bell rang, and Alex found herself making her way to the cafeteria, grateful for the distraction. She walked in and scanned the room until she spotted her best friend, Alice, sitting at a table near the window, already digging into her lunch.
As Alex slid into the seat across from her, Alice looked up with a mischievous grin.
"I heard Lorenzo Valenrian talk to you today," she said, her voice teasing. "You should really listen to the rumors about him. You won't believe half of what they say."
Alex raised an eyebrow, curious. "What kind of rumors?"
Alice leaned in, lowering her voice as if she were about to reveal a deep, dark secret. "Apparently, he eats caviar for breakfast. Like, every day. And get this—he bathes in champagne. Like, actually bathes in it." She paused dramatically, watching Alex's reaction.
"Champagne? What is he, a walking billboard for luxury?" Alex scoffed, but she couldn't help the amused smile tugging at her lips.
"Oh, there's more." Alice's grin grew wider, and she leaned in even closer. "They say he's so good in bed—wait for it—he once broke a waterbed during sex."
Alex almost choked on her juice. "What?!"
"Yup," Alice confirmed, not missing a beat. "And apparently, it wasn't even his fault. The bed just couldn't handle his... skills." She threw Alex a knowing wink.
Alex's cheeks flushed with embarrassment at the sudden mental image, but she quickly pushed it aside. "I'm sure it's just exaggerated, Alice. You know how rumors get around here."
Alice shrugged. "Maybe. But, honestly, the guy's reputation is legendary. People talk about him like he's some kind of untouchable god. So if you've already gotten his attention, well... just be careful. He's trouble."
Alex glanced across the cafeteria, her eyes landing on Lorenzo, who was seated at a table surrounded by a group of laughing students. He seemed completely at ease, like the center of attention.
"Trust me, I'm not interested in whatever drama he's got going on," Alex said, turning back to Alice. "I'm just here to survive the rest of the year."
Alice raised an eyebrow. "Yeah, I wouldn't be so sure about that. You're already on his radar. And from what I hear, once you're in his sights, there's no getting out."
Alex let out a frustrated sigh. "I'm not getting involved in any of that," she muttered, but part of her knew Alice was right. Lorenzo Valenrian was trouble.
Alice's teasing tone didn't let up as she leaned back in her chair, twirling a strand of her hair around her finger with an exaggerated sigh. "Talk for you, but I could really use a handsome playboy sending me to heaven."
Alex shot her a sideways glance, half amused, half exasperated. "Alice, seriously?"
Alice bit her lip playfully, her eyes shining with mischievous amusement. "I mean, I've heard some really interesting things about Lorenzo. Rumor has it, he's got a lot of... skill." She leaned in closer, lowering her voice, as if sharing a secret. "Like, he's so good in bed, he exhausted four women at the same time."
Alex blinked, her face flushing as her mind raced to process the words. "What? Four women?"
Alice nodded, an exaggerated grin spreading across her face. "Yeah, apparently he wore them out so much they couldn't even walk straight the next day. Four at once, Alex. He's got skills." She twirled her hair again, her expression far too entertained for Alex's comfort.
Alex let out a small groan, her face heating up even more. "I don't need to know all this, Alice. It's... it's just gross."
Alice laughed, clearly enjoying Alex's discomfort. "Hey, I'm just saying, if you're looking for a little fun, he's the guy to go to. He's practically a legend around here. Not everyone gets that kind of reputation without having a little something extra, right?"
Alex shook her head, trying to change the subject. "I don't want any part of whatever he's selling, okay? I've got enough to worry about without getting involved in that."
But Alice didn't let up, her eyes dancing with teasing excitement. "You never know, Alex. A little excitement might not be such a bad thing. Imagine what it'd be like to get caught in his web."
Alex rolled her eyes, trying to ignore the embarrassing mental images now swirling in her head. "Please, Alice. I'm not going to fall for any of that."
Alice's grin widened. "We'll see. I think you're already hooked."
Alex groaned, burying her face in her hands. Alex couldn't shake the thought of Lorenzo Valenrian—the golden boy with the perfect smile, the rumored heartbreaker. It seemed like the rumors about him were endless, and she was starting to wonder just how much of it was true.
Alex crossed her arms and shot Alice a pointed look. "If he comes over here, you can have him. All I don't need right now is some arrogant rich boy trying to conquer me like I'm some kind of trophy in my senior year."
Alice smirked, tapping a manicured finger against her chin. "Oh, honey, I'd gladly take him off your hands." She sighed dramatically, twirling her hair again. "But let's be real, Lorenzo Valenrian doesn't chase—he chooses. And from what I've h today, he's already set his sights on you."
Alex scoffed, stabbing at her salad with unnecessary force. "Well, he's wasting his time. I'm not some lovestruck girl who's going to fall for his stupid charm just because he flashes a smile."
Alice hummed, unconvinced. "Mmhmm. You say that now, but let's see how long you last before he's got you wrapped around his finger like the rest."
Alex rolled her eyes, refusing to entertain the thought. "Not happening."
But just as the words left her mouth, a hush fell over the cafeteria. The shift was subtle, but undeniable. A ripple of whispers spread through the students as someone entered.
Alex didn't have to turn around to know who it was.
Alice's grin stretched even wider. "Speak of the devil."
Alex refused to look. She was not going to give Alice the satisfaction. But the murmurs around them grew louder, the energy in the cafeteria shifting, and she knew exactly who had just walked in.
Alice, of course, wasted no time. "Well, well, well," she said, her voice dripping with amusement. "Look who just graced us with his presence."
Against her better judgment, Alex finally glanced up—and there he was.
Lorenzo Valenrian strode into the cafeteria like he owned the place, exuding effortless confidence. His crisp white shirt was still unbuttoned at the top, his navy blazer now slung casually over his shoulder. His dirty blonde hair was perfectly tousled, like he had just stepped out of some high-end magazine shoot.
People moved out of his way without him having to ask, and the ones who didn't were already trying to catch his attention—whispering, giggling, throwing him flirtatious glances. It was ridiculous how effortlessly he commanded a room.
And then, to Alex's growing irritation, his sharp blue eyes landed directly on her.
Alice leaned in, whispering with barely contained excitement. "Oh, this is so good."
Alex straightened in her seat, pretending to be completely uninterested. But Lorenzo had already started moving, weaving through the cafeteria with a lazy sort of grace until he reached their table.
"Alex Dunphy," he said smoothly, a knowing smirk playing on his lips. "Didn't take you for the type to steal someone's seat."
Alex blinked, momentarily thrown. "Excuse me?"
Lorenzo pulled out a chair, not even asking for permission before sitting down beside her. The scent of expensive cologne and something undeniably him invaded her space.
He leaned in slightly, lowering his voice as if sharing a secret. "Biology. My seat."
Alex scoffed, crossing her arms. "Oh, that? Maybe if you actually showed up to class on time, people wouldn't take it."
Lorenzo chuckled, the sound low and amused. "Fair point." He tilted his head, studying her with an intensity that made her uncomfortable. "So, tell me, Alex, what else do you steal?"
Alice choked on her drink. "Oh my God."
Alex's cheeks burned. "Are you seriously implying—"
He leaned back, a satisfied smirk still in place. "Relax, I'm just messing with you."
Alex rolled her eyes. "Great. Another arrogant rich boy who thinks he's funny. Just what I needed."
Lorenzo only grinned wider. "Oh, trust me, I'm hilarious."
Alice, meanwhile, was absolutely loving this. She wiggled her eyebrows at Alex, then turned to Lorenzo with a sly smile. "You know, Alex was just saying she has no interest in guys like you."
Lorenzo didn't even flinch. If anything, his smirk deepened. "Is that so?" He turned his gaze back to Alex, eyes twinkling with amusement. "That's too bad."
Alex lifted a brow. "Why?"
He leaned in again, voice low and teasing. "Because I love a challenge."
Alex's jaw clenched as she shot him a glare. "Sleep with you? Not in a million years. For me, you're the devil, and I'll stay far away."
Lorenzo's grin didn't falter. If anything, it widened, a spark of amusement flickering in his icy blue eyes.
Without hesitation, he leaned in, closing the space between them. His hand reached up, fingertips grazing her cheek in a slow, deliberate touch. Alex tensed, every nerve in her body on high alert.
His voice was a low murmur, smooth and teasing. "Are you scared, Alex?" His thumb traced the edge of her jaw. "Scared that if you dance with the devil…" He paused, his lips just inches from hers. "You might actually love it?"
Alex's breath hitched for just a second—just long enough for his smirk to turn victorious.
That snapped her out of it.
She slapped his hand away, her glare sharp enough to cut. "You wish," she snapped, grabbing her tray and standing up. "Stay in your lane, Valenrian."
Without another word, she stormed off, leaving Alice gaping at her in shock.
Lorenzo, however, simply chuckled, watching her retreating figure with an infuriatingly amused expression.
"Oh, sweetheart," he murmured to himself. "This is going to be fun."
