Chapter 1399: Clearing Prerequisites (3)
'[Spell Scribe]?' asked Valyr in return after regaining his bearings. 'Are you sure that the subclass is called under that name?'
Although it seemed like the way he asked his question made him look doubtful towards the answer Arcane gave him, the young man had already accepted the answer she gave him as truth from the very start.
After all, if even the personification of magic herself told him that it was the subclass he was looking for, then wouldn't he be the fool for not following her advice?
But then again, it was not as if Valyr's doubts were not without reason.
From what he could recall from his past life, there were a few common subclasses mage players would choose whenever they wanted to bolster their spellcasting capabilities.
To no surprise, the first choice among the various subclasses out there was the Alchemist subclass.
Though it gave minimal benefit towards the overall might of one's spells, the subclass made up for it by giving the player finer control over their mana, as well as reduced cost and cooldown when casting spells.
Of course, with how little the Alchemist subclass affected the might of one's spellcasting capabilities, a good chunk of players sought out a subclass that gave a good balance of greater might and finer control.
Fortunately, those same players were able to discover the Rune Carver subclass.
With one's own mana being the main material needed to carve runes, it went without saying that those who took the subclass found improvements in both their control over mana, as well as the potency of the mana they unleashed.
Adding on the fact that the stats gained from the subclass aligned with the main stats needed to become an exemplary mage, most players recommended it as the go-to subclass that balanced both improvement to one's might and monetary gain.
Sadly, the initial requirement to become a rune carver was significantly higher than the requirement to become an alchemist, needing one to already be slightly skilled at manipulating their mana beforehand.
If not for that, then it would've been a foregone conclusion for most, if not all mage players to choose the Rune Carver subclass first instead of the Alchemist subclass.
Compared to the Alchemist subclass or the Rune Carver subclass, the Spell Scribe subclass wasn't really a subclass mage players would decide as their first choice.
Though it did boost more or less the same stats the Alchemist and Rune Carver subclasses focused on, the Spell Scribe subclass was eventually relegated as a last-resort choice by many because of one simple reason.
The profession itself.
Unlike the Alchemist subclass where one would interact with various materials on their path, or the Rune Carver subclass where one would comprehend various facets of energies, the Spell Scribe subclass was pretty much what the name implied.
All one had to do in that subclass was just write down a spell onto a piece of parchment and give others the ability to use it.
That's all.
In terms of the initial requirements, becoming a spell scribe was considerably easier than becoming an alchemist.
All one needed to get started was a few pieces of parchment, one's own mana, and a few spells under one's belt.
Using one's own mana as ink, one would imbue the power of a spell into the parchment by etching it, which usually took on the form of the spell's own magic circle.
After that, a few extra lines of mana would be connected to the circle as an input, giving others the ability to make use of the spell embedded in the parchment.
If one were to skip over the fact that the process of imprinting spells onto parchment was pretty monotonous, then the Spell Scribe subclass was more or less in the same ballpark as the Rune Carver subclass.
With enough time spent, one would be able to amass a massive number of spells under their belt, giving one the flexibility and adaptability that wouldn't have normally been given to a mage.
Not only that, but one's control over mana would also improve, albeit to a lesser degree compared to a rune carver.
Though Valyr had no problem with the monotonous work of the Spell Scribe subclass, the reason why he had second thoughts towards Arcane's answer was the fact that he hadn't heard of the subclass having a variant that was greater than Rare grade.
In comparison, both the Alchemist and Rune Carver subclasses had multiple variants easily reaching Mythic grade, with Valyr's own Mystic Rune Alchemist subclass being a good example of it.
'…She wouldn't recommend the subclass for no reason,' muttered the young man to himself inwardly, reminding himself once more of the being he was talking to.
With that, he was able to return to his previous calm just as Arcane had responded to his question.
'There's a chance that it might have a different name on your planet, but I'm pretty sure it goes by the name [Spell Scribe].' Arcane's voice echoed in his mind.
'Just to make sure… a subclass called [Spell Scribe] does exist on Veldanyr, right?'
'It does,' responded Valyr with a nod, only to then give her the various characteristics that made the subclass stand out from the others as confirmation.
Hearing Arcane confirm that the subclass he knew was the one she was recommending, the young man decided to probe for a bit more information as to why the subclass had the best synergy with his main class.
However, rather than give him a direct answer, Arcane merely let out a chuckle as she gave him a cryptic response.
'You'll find out the moment you get it.'
Whoosh!
And just like that, the connection between the two had been severed, briefly leaving Valyr speechless as Arcane's last few words continued to linger in his mind.
Naturally, he tried to contact her a few more times after that, considering how she readily accepted his request to converse at the start.
Sadly, no matter how many times he initiated a conversation with her, Arcane rejected all requests, forcing the young man to keep her words in mind as he shifted his attention to the screen he had in front of him.
"…That's a lot of subclasses," said Valyr, slightly taken aback by the sheer number of subclasses Dalton recommended to him.
Looking through the list the old man gave him, the young man wasn't surprised to see the more mainstream subclasses on them, such as the Alchemist and Rune Carver subclass.
In fact, the Spell Scribe subclass was also on Dalton's list, noting down that the subclass was highly recommended if he wanted to keep all his skills purely related to spellcasting.
However, rather than stop there, the old man also recommended some powerful subclasses Valyr had only briefly in the past, causing the latter to be surprised at how much Dalton knew.
Nevertheless, with Arcane's advice and cryptic message still lingering in his mind, the young man settled on the Spell Scribe subclass at the very end, knowing that the choice she gave him was for the sake of his greater improvement.
With a few more messages exchanged here and there, Valyr was able to enlist Dalton's help in obtaining the Spell Scribe subclass as soon as possible, with the latter informing him that he'd be able to get the subclass around a week from now.
Thanking the old man for his help one last time, it was only then did the young man close the screen he brought up, letting out a faint sigh of relief as he thought back to the first question he had when logging into the game.
"Ah, right."
"What should I do next?"
Rubbing his chin for a bit, Valyr thought that it wouldn't be a bad idea for him to focus on pushing his mana to the 9th level of the scripture. After all, he was already halfway to completing it.
Though, as he continued to ponder over his other choices, he recalled once more that he had yet to evolve any of the Growth-type classes in his other identity.
Considering that the exact same thought eventually reminded him of what his player identity sorely lacked, Valyr soon made up his mind to focus on his other identity for the meantime.
'It's also a good opportunity to update myself on various things,' thought the young man to himself, activating his identity-swapping skill without hesitation.
"[Soul Shift]."
Swoosh!
Feeling his original strength return to his body, Valyr felt a smile hang on his lips as he quickly readjusted to his original identity in Greater Beyond.
After that, he brought up the system, wanting to see how much time he had until [Soul Shift] deactivated on its own.
"Almost two days and a half." Confirming that he had a decent amount of time to do what he needed to do, Valyr faintly nodded in satisfaction as he commanded the system to change the screen's contents.
Ding!
Looking through the prerequisite quests needed to evolve his main class, the young man briefly recalled that he had completed one of them in the past, only to then find out that he had unknowingly completed two.
"Ascend one's Intent related to Forging up to 5th Grade…" With his gaze focused on this specific quest, Valyr eventually recalled how he accomplished the quest, letting out a wry chuckle the moment he was done reminiscing.
"In any case, since that quest's done, then that only leaves me with the forging quests," muttered Valyr to himself, smiling by the time he was done.
"…I guess it's time to pay a visit to the Blacksmith Guild, then."
With his mind made up, he went ahead and conjured an azure dragon under his feet before heading straight to the heart of Astella City.
"It's been a while since I've been there, anyway."
Whoosh!
