Chapter 25: Timebreaker
It was a simple story
And it involved Cherry, Ella's sister.
But unlike the story told by Ella from her point of view and mostly revolved around her Sister's obsession with their missing brother and the resulting obsession over the current now dead head of the bronze guard, this one was a different story.
One that occurred before the malaise.
"As you should know by now, this place is strange."
'You can say that again.'
"Every single month with no end in sight and with no variance between the times of the revolution, time consistently winds back to a month later where all of the damages done to this poor kingdom revert back in on themself."
"But again, just because time rewinds doesn't mean that the damage hadn't already been dealt." The lizard let out a long sigh.
"The kingdom still is in shambles, the Malaise infection is still running rampant and even all of the undead return from the grave from whence they came as we carry the memories of this back in time with us."
"Wait if that's the case-"
"Yes" The blacksmith confirmed my guess. "Even if you somehow miraculously lay the Captain of the Bronze guard to rest, he still would eventually return when the month ends remembering nothing of the past."
I furrowed my brows at that remark. "Then isn't what Cherry is trying to do impossible? Even if you were to kill that zombie, he would just return back in a month."
"Have you noticed that despite being one of the only blacksmiths currently active in the ramparts no one likes being near me?"
"Yes, I have noticed that, kinda hard not to when everyone you can see is staring at your back." Gesturing at the doorway, even now people didn't dare pass by to glance at what was happening inside.
"That is because I am a timebreaker, not just me, the little lady beside you is additionally a timebreaker as well"
"Enlighten me."
"What should be a good example... ah." Snapping their fingers, their grip on the hammer loosened as they brought the head of the weapon closer to the ground.
And despite the size of the head that was even bigger than the entire length of the lizard man's body, he wielded it effortlessly, bringing the still hot head of the hammer to the ground.
Dragging it against it, lines were carved on the hewn stone ground.
"View this piece of stone as the island and this as us."
Drawing rough stick figures he continued. "Everytime we do something a line is drawn against the stone, view this as our actions, everytime time rewinds on this island, these lines are erased."
He skillfully moved the flat side of the hammer across the stone melting it slowly and filling in the lines he had drawn.
"A timebreaker however makes it so that the island can't erase our lines."
Removing the hammer, the lines above one of the stick figures heads remained while only rough remains of the other two stick figures had melted away back into the stone.
"Because of this, whatever actions we take, if we make it so, can possibly become permanent."
Drawing a few more lines, the lizard man continued to erase them all, leaving only the lines drawn above the stick figures head above as if to drive home the point that no matter if the island rewound time for everyone once more, they would still linger.
"We are two of these timebreakers."
Turning their gaze to me, I wasn't so dull as to not understand what he was trying to say.
"...You're saying that if given the chance you can permanently kill someone in place where even death isn't permanent."
"It's why everyone is afraid of us." Ella nodded her head before pointing at the door.
"Even if the Blacksmith in front of us is one of the best blacksmiths out there that is able to permanently upgrade their equipment in a time where all temporary changes disappear, everyone fears incurring his wrath and permanently dying as a result."
Ella turned to stare at me. "So I have to ask you Slade, are you still going to follow me in my endeavor to kill that man? Permanently."
"Yes." I unhesitatingly replied.
Tilting her head she stared at me. "Are you not afraid of me permanently erasing you from this plane of existence?"
Hearing her words I wryly smiled. "To be honest, the concept of death is still terrifying to me, as it's an end to everything that I am, everything that I could be and it's just the end."
"Then why...?"
"But in the end, even if I know how death feels like and know what could happen if I die, it might actually be a better alternative than the direction that this world is heading."
"What?"
"Nothing." I waved off Ella's puzzled question before snapping my fingers and gesturing at her.
"Besides, even if you were to leave permanent fatal wounds on my body with your timebreaker magic or something, are you completely confident of being able to do it without dangerously wounded? I'm still pretty sure that death is a traumatic experience that not many could easily recover from."
"...I can backstab in a situation you can't avoid."
"Are you trying to get me to not trust you? Don't forget I have several explosives that could harm both me and you, and besides, if it was a situation that I can't avoid then isn't it twice as likely that you won't escape unharmed?"
"..."
"Hah! I like you manling!" Slapping his raised knee, the lizard perched atop a rock like some sort of old hermit laughed loudly, the hammer in their hands still glowing with extreme heat.
"Why thank you...?"
"Just call me the Blacksmith." Rubbing their chin, the characteristic blue eyes that seemed to be adorning the faces of all the lizards I have seen he chuckled.
"It's been such a long time in this place where time rewinds that I've forgotten the name I was called, so just call me the blacksmith."
"...Just out of curiousity, how many times has this island rewound itself back to the start of the month again?"
"A good question." Pondering for a moment, the Blacksmith stared at the sky searching through their memories as Ella stood besides the wall in silent contemplation.
"...It's been so long so the number probably isn't correct, but I think it's been..."
*SCREAM!
A sudden scream filled the air interrupting the Blacksmith's words pulling all three of their eyes to the front of the store where the scream had come from.
Tilting their heads in confusion, the sudden toll of bells filled the air of the underground in the Ramparts and almost as if hit by a spell they froze in their place.
But in that instant that they froze in place they just as swiftly burst into action.
The blacksmith returned into the depths of their forge swiftly gathering something back there as Ella Eisengard just as swiftly took out their bow, grabbing a handful of arrows from her quiver and separating them into her fingers.
Carrying three of them at a time I hurriedly stopped her from leaving the store.
"Hey Ella! What's happening!?"
Turning to me with a serious gaze that I hadn't seen before she softly spoke to me.
"That bell is the sound of an undead incursion."
"Ah." Widening my eyes it didn't take long for the dots to connect as I watched Ella rush out of the store, bow in hand as she pulled the string back and just as swiftly loosed the arrow nocked onto it.
"Manling! Take this!" The blacksmith shouted before tossing me something with incredibly speed.
"Huh?"
Belatedly reacting, I snatched the thing that the Blacksmith had tossed at me from the air, observing its black surface in extreme surprise.
"What is this?!"
"It's a commission I received a while back from some guy! I've finished it but I can make a new one later!"
Gathering several things within a brown piece of cloth he carried the bag much larger than himself while still carrying the radiator and hammer that were both bigger than himself The Blacksmith continued.
"You can take all of the weapons here if you want, I doubt I'll be returning! Just give me the feedback on how they work if you do take them."
Hurriedly adjusting the sack of things on their back they swiftly ran into a wall.
And unlike what I had expected a scene straight out of the train station in Harry Potter's book appeared before me as the Blacksmith instantly was swallowed up by the wall like he was sinking into a lake.
'...Well that just happened.'
Observing the item I had taken from the Blacksmith I then turned to my surroundings filled with weapons of all shapes, sizes and colors.
'...He gave me his permission so it just seems rude not to right?'
Feeling the hoarding instincts ingrained into my very being from my times I played video games activate, it seemed that despite being in another world I was still me.
Or that just might be the Greed inherent in every human being.
Not that I was going to complain about it.
Swiftly taking most of the weapons that weren't duplicates of each other, if there was additional space I grabbed the racks that they were on, turning them into materials that could be stacked.
And just like that, five minutes swiftly passed by with my body becoming just a little bit more tired and I was carrying a coalition of weapons inside my inventory.
It was easier than I had thought as I just needed to pick it up and bring its entire body into the inventory.
'It's regrettable that there's not more space'
Feeling a slight regret over the fact that I could possibly take everything here if I wanted I nevertheless threw away most of the trash and duplicates so that there was still some usable slots in my inventory.
'It's weird that there's no armor-'
*Crack! Boom!
The sound of a wall collapsing echoed into my ears as I belatedly realized that I was in a zombie apocalypse filled with a lot more than just zombies.
'But I guess I'll just have to make do.'
Adjusting the three hotbars within my vision, after some deliberation I got rid of the sinew slicer and replaced it with the grenade.
Hand still holding the black item in my hand I briefly wondered why it was commissioned to be made here in a place that was distinctly western in architecture and armaments before having to shove it to the back of my mind.
Instantly reacting to the numerous flying red beans carrying scythes within their bodies, zombies, skeletons and many more undead poured out from the cracks in the walls.
Hand flashing I threw out the item connected to a string.
Shaped like a diamond with a ring like pommel at the end, a string ran through the pommel and connected to the band on my hands.
Extending for a few meters ahead of me, the black diamond shaped weapon instantly flew into the skull of a zombie caught unawares.
Whipping my hand back, I instantly caught the Japanese Kunai in my hands, drawing a trail of corrupted black blood in the air.
