Chapter 18: The Ramparts (4)
Staring at the idyllic scenery, the strangely peaceful atmosphere complete with a village girl looking woman sat atop the remains of a ruined kingdom frowned.
"Hello? Anyone home in that head of yours?"
"Hm? Oh, I guess I was just a bit tired."
Rubbing the back of my head, I chuckled to myself as the woman whom I had met in the prisoner's quarters got back to cleaning the wood on their bow.
"That is fair, living in this hellhole of a kingdom is bound to leave a lasting mark on the sane, even more so when good company is hard to come by nowadays."
Waving at the ruined surroundings I couldn't help but nod my head since last I recalled the only people I had seen were the Collector, Guillian and this Dame Knight right here.
'Was I using that term correctly?'
"So then, if you don't mind, who are you stranger?" Testing the tension of the string, she eyed one of the many corpses in the distance and nocked an arrow on to the bowstring.
"You don't need to tell me if you aren't comfortable, but it would be nice to know some other survivors on this island."
Releasing the arrow, despite the seated position that didn't really do well for draw strength, the arrow whistled through the air before causing one of the many wandering figures on the wall to collapse onto the ground.
The wandering figures around it bursting into a flurry of action, I couldn't help but think that they're like ants as they panicked at the sudden collapse of one of their undead comrades.
Joining her in her seating arrangement, I hopped atop one of the many overturned stone blocks and rested my hand against my cheek while staring at the numerous undead appearing like ants from a distance, replying to the woman's previously asked question.
"The name is Slade, Slade Bridge but haven't we met before Dame...?"
"Cherry Eisengrad is my name... I do not think we have met before Sir Bridge." She shrugged her shoulders while holstering her bow. "But then again Sir Bridge, ever since the Kingdom of Sevallia had fallen I have forgotten many things."
'The Kingdom of Sevallia eh?' Noting down that little tidbit of information I let out an exaggerated sigh while staring at the flaming sun lighting up the sea in the distance.
'But it seems she doesn't remember me... Oh who am I kidding, of course she doesn't remember this devilishly handsome rogue with a head'
Recalling the fact that I had initially met Cherry without any head to speak of, although I personally would've straight up began swinging, she instead chose to talk with the headless me at the time.
And due to that, she probably couldn't connect the headless black flaming head of a figure with the me now.
But in all honesty, who could?
It's not like you could see a man without a head and a man with one, compare them side by side whilst they wore the same clothes and suddenly come to the conclusion that they are the same person.
'Can you?'
Falling into a mild doubt as I recalled the numerous look a like bodies I had seen beneath Guillian, it was genuinely doubtful that Cherry could make a connection between me and ironically, me
We definitely didn't have the best first encounter as a headless figure since... Oh my death, I looked like an undead.
Realising belatedly that my headless form was one that could be seen as an intelligent undead Cherry snapped their fingers.
"Hello? Planet Aria to Slade? Are the lamps on?"
"Oh sorry, I was just thinking"
Giving me a doubtful stare, she took out an oiled cloth and began to clean the grime off of their blade, every stroke of the rag leaving it much cleaner than before.
"Well if you say so Sir Bridge, do you mind if I call you Slade?"
"If you don't mind me calling you Cherry Dame Eisengrad?"
"It's fine with me" she shrugged her shoulders "Besides, I would be disappointed in you if you're still clinging to those meaningless pleasantries Slade"
"In this apocalyptic scenario it truly is foolish to cling to those fancy mannerisms, but sometimes habits rise over instincts" I recalled my past life on earth.
"I should know Knight Eisengrad, I've seen more than a few people clinging to past glories despite the fist being closer than the law"
"Former Knight, and it's Cherry to you Slade, unless you want me to resort to those meaningless pleasantries again"
"It was mostly for the sake of exaggeration"
"I only wish that the copper Knight order being disbanded wasn't an exaggeration" letting out a long sigh, I fell silent as a tingling sensation tickled the back of my brain.
Staring wistfully into the sunlit distance even as the sands of time blew relentlessly, the golden hour continued to shine down onto this earth as Cherry nostalgically spoke, her hands idly wiping the surface of the blade
"Did you know that I was once a part of the Bronze Order?"
"You have said that"
"Well the Bronze Order isn't as beautified as the bards make it seem"
"As the guards of the city, we have to deal with many things, ranging from dangerous things like the rare but feared city defense from annual monster waves and the periodic gang war that occurs as a result of our city being a major trading hub between continents"
"Of course since this doesn't happen that often you may think that I'm bitching, and I am, don't get me wrong, but what I find most annoying is the mundane problems"
"And why is that?"
"Hah..." Letting out a tired sigh, the nostalgic gleam in her eyes darkened.
"Most people don't think about it much since it happens on a rare basis, but when you expand the range of this rare basis to a city with tens of thousands of people it becomes so much of a problem that it's annoying"
"And since most of these problems are mundane ones, unless we want to paint the Bronze Order in a bad light we have to excersize excessive restraint when dealing with these small time criminals"
"And it doesn't help that those silver honey sucking leeches look down on us all day!" Grinding her teeth she co tinued to gripe.
"I understand the Golden Order looking down on us as they are granted the honourable duty of protecting the king, but those silver tongues bastards are nothing but a fancier version of us!"
Raising her broadsword the bronze colored blade pointed to the sky. "Ugh! The only thing they do that's different from us is deal with super powered I dividuals, things that us Bronze Order folk can do just as well!"
"If only that damned older sister of mine didn't join that guard we would've-!"
Continuing on she rambled on and on about the numerous problems the bronze guard faced when managing the order of the Cody, more than once complaining about the Silver and gold guard.
But even as complaints unceasingly tumbled out of her mouth like water from a damn, not once could I see the glow of nostalgia in her eyes disappear
"...I'm sorry that you had to listen to the story of someone you just met Slade"
"No no no, it was fine, if anything, it looked like you needed to get it off of your chest, and I learned something new from my new friend"
"...Do you already consider me a friend?"
"Well... Maybe something like acquaintances in a bar then?"
"Heh, you're funny Slade." Sheathing her broadsword on her back with a specially made hook for such large items, she leapt off of the large stone block.
Kicking up a small cloud of dust she playfully flicked my chest before winking at me.
"Well then, it was nice knowing you Slade"
Waving me goodbye she paused at the base of the steps before turning around and throwing me something.
Catching it instinctively as I sensed no malintent I looked curiously at the item only to see a brown colored insignia of a helmet embedded onto a shield
Curiously looking at her, she smiled. "If anyone bothers you Slade, show this insignia and tell them that you know the captain of the Bronze Order, if they know what's good for them, they'll stop bothering you"
"..."
"Bye!" Cheerfully waving me goodbye, I smiled and waved back in response.
