Chapter 1 – Lena
...
<United States / New York / 19:37>
It was a rainy night in New York, the city lights illuminated the whole area but there was still the veil of the night that haunted people....
A person was coming out of a hamburger restaurant, this person was Winston Oxton, a renowned scientist for his great advances in medical and technological science, using several revolutionary technologies created thanks to his great intellect.
Winston was a tall (183cm) and handsome man with black hair, electric green eyes and with a beard of the same color as his hair, he wore a pair of glasses which gave him a touch of intellectuality, he dressed casually with a white sweater with green decorations, a black shirt, a black jeans and a pair of white shoes.
He had just left his favorite restaurant as he was celebrating his new invention in conjunction with David Shield, which had been a resounding success, managing to create a machine capable of identifying people's Quirks with an accuracy of 89.2% which was quite a large percentage compared to the old machine that only reached 56.7%.
Uff... nothing like a couple of burgers from Fenix Dinner to celebrate haha... too bad the rain had to ruin everything... but what can you do. Winston thought with a slight smile on his face.
He was heading home to get some rest, although he was a bit cautious as it was a bit late and villains are usually more active at this hour... but he wasn't particularly worried, after all it was New York City, which was guarded by many big hero agencies, even if something happened it would be solved very soon.
Walking down the street and admiring the city lights for the thousandth time, he hailed a cab and asked to be taken near his home.
Once he was close, he simply decided to walk there...
... until...
"Uwa u-u waaaa!"
He heard a baby crying in an alley.
Winston quickly went to the alley and approached the place of the crying which came from a trash can. Upon opening the trash can, he found a box containing a baby in a small bed improvised with only a few pieces of cloth.
The baby didn't seem to be more than a few months old...
'WHO IN THEIR SANE JUDGMENT WOULD LEAVE A BABY HERE?!...uff...calm down Winston this is not the time to look for who's responsible...it doesn't look like they left him a long time ago...but with the rain and the place where they left him it was only a matter of time before the baby would get sick or in a few days die of hunger'. Winston thought, picking up the baby and taking him to his chest to give him some warmth making the baby calm down a little bit.
Looking briefly at the baby as he lay on his chest, the baby had brown eyes and a little hair on his little head. He was clinging tightly to Winston's arms as he cried in the cold rain.
Winston ran home as fast as he could, completely ignoring how his body was chilled by the rain or how some passersby shouted at him.
He had finally made it home.
His house was big but not big enough to call it a mansion, Winston didn't like having such a big house as it was a waste of money since he lived alone.
Once inside, he left the baby on the couch in the living room and went to get some towels to dry the baby and himself.
After that, he checked the baby's condition but found nothing out of the ordinary which made him sigh with relief, anyway he snuggled the baby inside some towels to keep him warm.
After securing the baby's condition Winston called David using the emergency phone.
"Something went wrong with the machine--?!" Asked in bursts one of the greatest scientists of the time, David Shield.
David looked at his friend's condition in bewilderment, although a little drier than before, Winston was still soaked from the rain.
Seeing David's puzzled and confused look, Winston quickly explained. "Wow, calm down it's nothing like that, the machine is working as planned, don't worry, I'm calling you for another reason..."
David sighed in relief knowing it wasn't the machine but was curious as to why his friend would be calling him at this late hour. "Oh, I see, then why are you calling me, you're not the type to use the emergency call for anything..."
"The thing is... well... I found a baby in the street but I have no idea how to take care of a baby, your daughter should be around 1 or 2 years old by now right, so you must have some experience taking care of babies right?... can you help me?" Winston asked a little uncomfortable with the conversation.
"..."
"Hi, are you there?"
"Y-yes, I'm here I'm just puzzled that's the reason you called me... I'll pass you a file with everything I know... I'll also pass you some recipes on their feeding and other assorted things" Said David regaining his composure from the sudden question.
"Thank you David you are a lifesaver..." Winston sighed in relief as he sincerely thanked David.
"No problem... but, uhh, I have a question..."
Winston smiled. "Shoot, I'm all ears"
"Will you keep the baby or give them to an orphanage?" David asked curious of his scientist friend's choice.
"I...mnnnn..." Winston began to think seriously about this question.
Winston had no plans to get married, the only partner he had had was during high school and the relationship didn't last long. But he has been getting tired of everything about science and its advancement.
It just doesn't give him the satisfaction he had before, creating something new or improving something already existing, was something he enjoyed very much and gave him a sense of accomplishment that made him proud.
But he no longer got that sense of accomplishment, he felt it was... just another run-of-the-mill invention, even if to other people it was very novel....
Turning his gaze back to the little creature sleeping peacefully on his couch Winston made a decision as he smiled a little.
"Well I was planning to leave the scientific community to live peaceful life with the money from my inventions, so... I might as well do it with some company, I'll adopt the baby and take care of them with everything I have..." Winston said with determination in his voice.
David smiled at Winston's determination, almost reminding him of a certain super-strong blond. "In that case, congratulations Winston... now I have to go I'm a bit busy, the file should be here in a few minutes..."
Once David cut the call short, the house was silent again, interrupted only by the heavy rain.
It didn't take long for a lot of recipes, advice and baby stuff to arrive on Winston's phone.
Now... what name should I give you? Winston thought as he gazed at the baby.
He walked over to the baby to see if....
...So, a girl....
After thinking for a few minutes with the full capacity of his brain, he finally decided on a name.
"Your name will be Lena, Lena Oxton!"
