Kenji peered out the jet carrier window as they flew over the desolate remains of the bastion.
"A lot happened after you disappeared," Uraraka replied to Kenji's unasked question as she sat across him and Toga who was in Kenji's lap sleeping peacefully.
"H-how long…how long have I been away?" Kenji asked hesitantly, afraid to hear Uraraka's response.
Uraraka stared at Kenji for a moment before responding, "Just over six months, but it feels like it's been an eternity."
Kenji couldn't help but glance down at Toga who even in her sleep was holding onto him desperately as if afraid to let him go, "How did she handle it."
"She almost destroyed herself at first" Uraraka replied as she got a far away look in her eyes, clearly recalling the past, "Sometimes I just wanted to scream at her to give up and stop living in denial. But she never gave up hope that you would come back, and now here you are back from the dead."
Kenji was silent for a second before looking Uraraka in the eyes, "Thank you for sticking by her. I don't think she would have done nearly as well without you."
A faint blush spread across Uraraka's cheeks as she glanced away, "We were friends, of course I wasn't going to leave her alone."
They then fell into a comfortable silence both having a lot to reflect on and think about. But eventually a chime echoed through the jet carrier and Uraraka perked up, "We're here."
"Where's here?" Kenji asked as he leaned to look out the window and saw a black speck on the horizon which was growing larger and larger with each passing second.
"The Academy," Uraraka replied and Kenji's eyes widened as the black speck became a massive armored fortress with sloped defensive walls and semi translucent dome acting as a roof. Kenji could also spot countless automated turrets some larger than the jet carrier slowly panning back and forth across the airspacing scanning for threats.
And while the structure was impressive Kenji couldn't help but lament at how small the entire base was, 'How many people could possibly live inside those walls. Not even a fraction of the city would be able to fit.'
"Don't worry, there's a series of underground tunnels and caverns where the civilian population lives," Uraraka informed as if reading Kenji's mind, "Only military and hero personnel live on the surface anymore. It's too risky for anyone else."
"Why? So far I've only seen rubble and dust," Kenji asked as the jet started to decelerate as they approached the fortress.
"That's because we just completed a clear," Uraraka answered, "We get daily beast hordes pouring in from the wilds, luck you showed up when you did. Three hours earlier and you would have been between a rock and a hard place."
Before their conversation could continue the jet came to a stop hovering before the Academy and a second later an automated voice rang through the hangar.
"Vessel you have sixty seconds to Identify yourself, or you will be considered a hostile aircraft and be met with potentially lethal force."
"This is Pro Hero Nebula, returning from patrol of sector Alpha-167. We have one suspect in our possession charged with being outside city limits and resisting arrest. In addition to myself, Pro Hero Monarch and civilian Kenji Aotoma are onboard."
"Records show that Kenji Aotoma has been reported missing and assumed dead for six months and thirteen days. Do you still believe Kenji Aotoma is on board?"
Uraraka let out a sigh, "Yes, during our patrol Monarch and myself found Kenji Aotoma and after confirming his identity decided to return from our patrol."
"Very well, your vessel will land where you will be greeted by a boarding party and inspected. Any signs of resistance or suspicious acts will be considered an act of aggression."
The voice then fell silent as a section of the armored dome opened and the jet started to descend.
"Sorry about that, but most days dread beasts are the least of our worries." Uraraka replied as she sank back in her seat, "The villainy rate exploded after the wall collapsed, and sometimes I don't blame them. Times are desperate right now."
"What exactly happened to cause…all of this," Kenji asked tentatively.
Uraraka got a far away look in her eyes, "After the earthquake and beast horde we thought the worst was over. Yes the damage had been done and countless lives were lost, but there was still hope to rebuild. That hope vanished when the first rift was discovered.
"Rifts?
Uraraka nodded and pointed at the shining pillar of purple light still visible on the horizon like a second sun, "No one knows exactly what they are or how they appeared, only that they're natural sources of concentrated alpha particles. Not only does it attract Dread Beasts like flies, but it makes them stronger."
"How much stronger?" Kenji asked but his eyes never left the rift.
"It depends, some get a little boost…but for the outliers the Guild had to make a new name for them…the first official sighting of one destroyed nearly a third of the city and took the five top rankers to take it down. They make Dread Kings look like child's play."
"So what are they called?" Kenji asked as Uraraka fell silent for a split second as a dark look passed over her eyes, "They're called…Paragons."
---
Toga yawned as she rubbed her eyes and stretched, "Why did you guys wake me up?"
"Because they think we've been compromised." Uraraka replied as they stood in back of the jet and the bay door started to open letting sunlight spill in from the outside, "You know how the Guild and Council are with security measures."
"Man those guys suck, you'd think I get a little slack after everything I've done for them." Toga muttered grumply as she leaned against Kenji, "You've done a lot for the council?"
Kenji asked skeptically only for Toga to grin slyly, "Don't worry I'll tell you all about my escapades later."
Kenji sighed and looked to Uraraka for help who shrugged before answering, "Toga is the tenth ranked pro-hero as of last month, and is third in regards to most Dread King kills and one of the only heroes in our generation that has fought a Paragon and survived"
Before Kenji could react to what Uraraka had said the bay doors finished opening and a ramp telescoped out forming a path for them to walk down.
"Come on sooner we get this done the better," Toga sang out as she practically skipped down the ramp with Uraraka and Kenji close behind her.
Stepping off the ramp Kenji looked around and saw that they were in the middle of a popper military base complete with squadrons of heavily armored guards walking around and hangars full of transport and combat vehicles.
But soon Kenji found his attention drawn to the group waiting for them at the end of the helipad, three rows of helmeted soldiers five deep with a familiar face in gleaming uniform waiting for them.
"Nebula, Monarch I'm glad to see you both," Ida greeted but his face remained an emotionless mask as his eyes locked onto Kenji and narrowed, "Your reentry was flagged, and after reading the report I have to agree. You there in the cloak, Identify yourself!"
