Chapter 7: What it takes to change
It had been two weeks since Shinji first took a step in the life of a vigilante.
Every day was filled with action, especially at night.
There had been many close calls because of his inexperience.
This past two weeks he hadn't fought himself, and only used his quirk to do so while he hid in the shadows.
Knowing that he would eventually need to fight, and perhaps kill people himself made him opposed to the idea.
This night was going to be different, he would step up and take personal action.
If he relied too much on his quirk it would bite him in the ass later when he was left alone with a powerful villain without any type of combat experience.
Shinji had survived stealing after being incapable of getting food on his first day out in the street.
He was caught doing so many times, but he also succeeded a lot.
When people found out that he'd stolen from them, they would try chasing after him only to be left behind by Shinji's incredible speed.
Today he hadn't eaten anything, the life of a thief was hard.
He wanted to stop villains but acted like one out of necessity. Hypocrisy is inside every human being.
'I will definitely stop stealing after I'm well off,' he thought.
He was currently hiding inside a dumpster looking out at the criminals tormenting a boy that seemed to be about his age.
He'd noticed the boy's peculiar traits of having white hair, and a multitude of glowing tattoos spread out across his body.
Shinji had wanted to start small, maybe only take on one villain as his first personal battle.
In front of him were three villains, one seemed to have a hardening quirk, another an extra head, and the last one blades for knees.
Doubt started filling his mind, he asked himself if he could truly do this.
When one of the men hit the boy and started taking him away, he knew that he had to act.
The monster started fusing with him. His appearance changed grotesquely before he was fully transformed.
The lid to the dumpster was opened slowly and out of it came a deadly creature.
Shinji's heart was beating fast in his chest, and his mind was filled with tons of what ifs.
Despite all this, his body didn't stop moving forward.
Shinji approached the men when they had their back turned away from him.
Walking on all fours, he arrived behind the men who were walking away with the boy over hardening quirk's shoulder.
He seemed to be unconscious, but this wasn't the case.
Pretending to be unconscious, the boy opened his eyes slowly.
Looking at the creature that was closely following after them, he screamed.
"Ahhh!!" The men were annoyed at the kid, thinking he was screaming to ask for help.
That was, however, until they saw the creature behind them about to slice the man with a knee for blade.
Shinji cursed in his mind as his attack had failed, the guy had a quick reaction time.
His body during the transformation was way better than his normal one, but he had half the power and speed of the monster.
The villains cursed as they knew that they were dealing with the monster everyone had been talking about these past few days.
After the guy had evaded his attack, a knee strike was directed at Shinji's head.
Shinji panicked and couldn't dodge in time.
This didn't matter however, as the blade broke effortlessly without causing any cuts.
He had been effectively kneed in the face.
Not expecting his attack to fail against the creature, he was unprepared to guard against the claws heading his way.
His abdomen was cut and his organs started spilling out.
He desperately tried to pick them up and return them to their place but it was useless.
He fell down and died shortly after.
"Arata!!" One of the men screamed in anger.
The man with the hardening quirk took the boy off his shoulder before kicking him with all his strength into a wall.
Now that he didn't have to worry about the boy, the man joined his comrade who had let out a yellow mist from one of his heads towards the creature.
This mist took away Shinji's vision and was now aimlessly swiping at nothing.
"It's your chance, take care of him." Mist guy said.
Not wasting the opportunity, he hardened his body and attacked Shinji. He started taking blow after blow.
This was the first time he'd felt pain since he started working as a vigilante.
Though Shinji thought that this wasn't anywhere near as painful as his dad's abuse.
Knowing that he needed to change his tactic, he stopped moving completely.
Shinji focused on his hearing to know where the man was coming from.
Footsteps were heard behind him before he clawed at the sound. Blood spilled out of the man with a hardening quirk.
Not expecting this turn of events, Shinji didn't miss the opportunity to hold him in place with one hand and with the other cutting his head off.
"Arghh!" The remaining member screamed in anger before throwing more smoke at Shinji's direction.
His skin started to burn from the smoke, but he didn't care.
Now that he'd heard the man screaming, he knew exactly where he was.
Pouncing in that direction, Shinji landed on top of him and effortlessly took his life.
Adrenaline started leaving his body after a few seconds. His vision returned to him shortly after.
This was the time where he realized he had forgotten the boy.
Because he'd been too focused on dealing with his enemies, the original purpose which was to protect the boy had escaped his thoughts.
This was something that would've never happened if he wasn't fighting himself.
Looking at the monster fighting from a distance, he had full view of the situation, here he didn't.
'Where is he?'
Shinji looked around and found him in a nearby wall, his condition was impossible to determine where he was standing.
He got close to the boy and looked at him with horror.
The boy had a metal bar piercing his stomach, he was barely conscious.
Shinji returned to his original form and took the boy in his arms.
"Please don't die, I'll take you to a hospital, think about your family."
The boy looked at Shinji, life was leaving his eyes.
"I don't have one... please, save me," he pleaded softly before passing away.
"Noo!!" Shinji screamed at the top of his lungs.
This was his first real failure since he started working as a vigilante, and it completely destroyed him.
Shinji was desperate, the death of this kid was his fault. In an act of desperation he said, "I wish you hadn't died."
A familiar arm came out of Shinji's chest before taking the boy.
The head of the monster came out soon after and started eating him.
"Stop! Return where you came from."
Shinji desperately tried to deactivate his quirk but it was impossible.
The boy was devoured in a few seconds, leaving nothing behind.
Tears started spilling from his eyes, the weight of failure falling heavily on his shoulders.
Shinji then noticed something strange on his arms, there were glowing tattoos.
He ran without rest until he found a puddle and saw his face.
The same face he'd seen without life a few seconds ago.
"What is happening to me?"
—----------
Shinji was walking through the streets without fearing the police would catch him for the first time.
He thought about the events from yesterday and about his failure a multitude of times.
He would have to be more careful next time.
He'd almost given up on being a vigilante, but he knew that this tragic experience should only motivate him to be better.
There was a park in front of him, he'd reached it after walking around aimlessly for a few hours.
It was nice to walk in the sun, though his tattoos were reacting to it in a way that made him feel uncomfortable.
Shinji approached the park and sat on a swing.
He hadn't noticed because he was distracted, but there was a boy crying in the swing beside him.
"Wanna talk about it?" Shinji asked.
The boy looked up at Shinji from where he was sitting with surprise.
He quickly wiped away his tears before saying, "I-it's nothing r-really."
"What's your name?" Shinji curiously asked.
The boy looked startled at the question but quickly answered.
"M-my name is Izuku M-Midoriya."
