Chapter 12: Chapter 12: Scout Regimen barracks
After their exploration of the kingdom, King Max turned to Aiden with a gleam in his eyes, his excitement far from over. "Now, my boy," he said, placing a heavy hand on Aiden's shoulder, "there's one more stop I want to make. Something I think you'll enjoy. We're heading to the Scout Regiment barracks."
Aiden blinked. He had heard stories of the Scout Regiment—brave men and women who served as the kingdom's first line of defence. But seeing them up close was something entirely different.
His curiosity piqued, he followed his father through the capital, walking a little faster to keep up with Max's long strides.
As they approached the outskirts of the capital, the atmosphere changed. The barracks were located in a secluded area, surrounded by high, fortified walls and tall watchtowers. It felt more serious here, more focused.
There was a palpable sense of duty that hung in the air, a stark contrast to the bustling, lively streets of the city they had just left.
Aiden's heart began to race. This was the home of the elite forces of Paradis, the men and women who risked their lives to protect the kingdom.
For a boy who had spent most of his life inside the palace, this felt like stepping into a new world.
The gates to the barracks opened with a loud creak, revealing a massive courtyard where several scouts were undergoing drills. They moved with precision, their movements sharp and disciplined as they sparred, trained, and prepared for whatever threat might arise. Aiden's eyes widened at the sight. These weren't just soldiers—they were warriors.
Captain Helena, who had been leading the scout team guarding them, turned to King Max and bowed slightly. "Your Majesty, would you like a tour of the facilities?"
Max grinned and nodded. "Lead the way, Captain. I want Aiden to see everything."
As they entered the main building, Aiden could see rows of equipment—swords, shields, rifles, and even more advanced weapons he couldn't quite identify. There were holographic interfaces on the walls, displaying tactical maps of the kingdom and beyond.
Despite the barracks' medieval exterior, it was clear that this was a high-tech operation. The scouts weren't just trained in physical combat—they were equipped with cutting-edge technology that made them a formidable force.
"We've been integrating new technologies into our forces," Max explained to Aiden, noticing his wide-eyed stare. "This isn't just about brute strength anymore. Our scouts are some of the most advanced soldiers in the world, thanks to our research teams. You'd be amazed at what they can do with the right equipment."
Aiden nodded, feeling both awe and confusion. He had always thought of Paradis as a more traditional kingdom, but the reality was far more complex.
The balance of old and new was everywhere, from the palace to the city, and now, even in the barracks.
Captain Helena led them into the training room, where a group of scouts was engaged in a series of high-intensity drills. Some were practising hand-to-hand combat, while others were engaged in virtual simulations, wearing sleek headsets that transported them to digital battlegrounds.
The combination of physical and virtual training was impressive, and Aiden couldn't help but feel a flicker of excitement.
Max, noticing Aiden's interest, leaned down to whisper, "These simulations allow them to train for any possible scenario. They're as close to real combat as you can get without the actual danger."
Helena gestured towards a large door at the end of the hall. "Your Majesty, the main training ground is this way."
Max nodded, waving Aiden to follow as they entered what looked like a colossal arena, covered by a high dome. It was the heart of the Scout Regiment's operations. The ground was marked with various terrains—rocky outcroppings, desert areas, and dense forests—allowing the scouts to train in all types of environments.
At the far end of the arena, towering mechs stood tall, another testament to the advanced technology the scouts had at their disposal.
Aiden's eyes nearly popped out of his head. "Are those… robots?"
Max laughed heartily. "Not exactly robots, more like exo-suits. They allow the scouts to move faster, hit harder, and survive in the most extreme conditions. Think of them as an extension of their bodies. Only the best of the best are allowed to pilot them."
As they continued their tour, Max stopped to chat with a few of the scouts, all of whom greeted him with the utmost respect.
Aiden watched as his father interacted with them, noting how different Max was with the soldiers.
He wasn't just their king; he was someone they trusted deeply, someone they would follow into battle without hesitation. It was clear that Max's reputation as a fierce and honourable warrior was well-earned.
At one point, they reached a large observation deck, where Aiden could see the entirety of the training arena below. Max turned to him, a serious look in his eyes.
"One day, Aiden, you'll be expected to lead these men and women," Max said, his tone shifting. "The Scout Regiment is the backbone of our kingdom's defences. It's not just about having power or a quirk—it's about earning the trust and respect of your people. That's something no amount of strength can give you."
Aiden swallowed hard, the weight of his father's words sinking in. He had always known he would one day take on responsibilities as a prince, but seeing the scouts in action, understanding the gravity of their mission—it made everything feel more real.
Could he live up to that expectation?
Captain Helena returned with a few more senior scouts, who demonstrated their unique quirks for Aiden's benefit. One had the ability to manipulate the earth beneath their feet, creating obstacles and defensive walls, while another could generate a force field that protected the entire squad from harm.
The diversity and power of their abilities were astonishing.
"Everyone here has a role," Max explained. "Their quirks are like tools—each one valuable in its own way. And together, they form an unstoppable unit."
After the demonstrations, Max suggested they head to the mess hall, where the scouts took their meals. It was a surprisingly jovial atmosphere, despite the regiment's serious mission.
Scouts laughed and shared stories, the camaraderie clear in every interaction. Aiden was struck by how close-knit they were, like a second family.
Max ordered a round of food for everyone, and as they sat at one of the long wooden tables, he turned to Aiden with a grin. "Well, what do you think of the scouts?"
Aiden thought for a moment, his gaze sweeping across the room. "They're… amazing," he admitted. "I didn't realise how important they were, how much they do."
Max smiled, clearly pleased. "It's easy to forget sometimes, being in the palace. But these men and women are the reason our kingdom stands strong. They're the ones who make sure we can sleep soundly at night."
As they finished their meal and prepared to leave, Max pulled Aiden close, his voice soft but firm. "I'm proud of you, Aiden. You've got a good heart, and that's what will make you a great leader one day. Never forget that."
Aiden nodded, feeling a strange sense of pride swelling in his chest. He still had a lot to learn, but today had shown him a side of his kingdom he hadn't known before.
The scouts, with their quirks and their unwavering loyalty, were more than just soldiers—they were the lifeblood of Paradis. And one day, it would be his responsibility to lead them.
As they left the barracks and made their way back to the palace, Aiden couldn't help but glance back at the towering walls of the Scout Regiment.
Something about this day felt like a turning point, a moment where he began to understand the true weight of his destiny.
But for now, he was content to walk beside his father, listening to Max's stories of his own time with the scouts, and feeling a little more connected to the world outside the palace walls.
