Chapter 81: The contract
[ The End ]
The TV screen faded to black, the credits rolling, displaying the names of the author, director, and the many others involved.
Tanjiro stood abruptly, his motions stiff, as if his body were moving without his conscious control. He approached the screen slowly, his emotions churning like a storm within him.
Just as his legs began to buckle, on the verge of collapse, I moved swiftly. Before his knees could touch the ground, I gently caught him, guiding him back onto the worn sofa. His breathing was shallow, and his tears, though abundant moments ago, were now drying on his cheeks.
"I know what you've just seen is hard to accept," I said softly, offering him a kind smile. "But let me tell you this—you win. Humanity triumphs against the demons. You all built your miracle."
Tanjiro's expression softened slightly. "That's right," he said, a glimmer of hope in his voice. "Thank you for showing me that. And my sister...she will become human again. My efforts weren't in vain."
I paused, letting his relief settle briefly, before speaking again. "However," I added, my tone now sad, "that ending may no longer come to pass. In fact, without you, things could take a much darker turn. If worse comes to worst, your sister might be killed—either by Muzan or even by the demon-hunting corps."
"Why?!" Tanjiro exclaimed, his voice heavy with disbelief and desperation.
"Because you," I began, walking toward the bar in the corner to brew my drink, "are the key to humanity's victory. What you saw on that screen is history as it was meant to be. Without you in your world, the future becomes uncertain. Without you, humanity's chances shrink to almost nothing."
Tanjiro's gaze dropped to the floor, his face reflecting a mix of disbelief and dread. "You mean...without me, the demons win?"
"It's possible," I replied while stirring the vibrant rainbow liquid in my cup. "The odds for human victory? Less than 0.1%, by my estimation."
Tanjiro's expression hardened. "How can you say that with such certainty?"
"You may not understand the full extent of Muzan's strength or his cunning," I replied, pouring the drink into two cups. I walked back toward him, extending one of the cups. "Here, drink this. It'll help."
He hesitated but took the cup. The moment he sipped the liquid, he recoiled, turning to the side to vomit.
"It's disgusting!" he exclaimed.
"Understandable," I said with a knowing nod. "It's your first time. But trust me, you'll grow to love it."
Before he could protest further, a peculiar sensation overtook him. He watched in awe as his wounds closed and healed before his eyes. The exhaustion that weighed heavily on him moments ago seemed to dissipate entirely.
He touched his body, marveling at the transformation.
"See? It works," I said, downing my cup in one gulp without hesitation. I let out a satisfied sigh and set my cup down.
"Muzan may be the strongest being in your world," I continued, "but he's also a coward."
Tanjiro looked up, surprised by the remark.
"After his defeat by Yoriichi Tsugikuni, the creator of Sun Breathing, Muzan went into hiding for years, waiting for Yoriichi to die of old age," I explained. "He's careful, cunning, and patient. But that patience is what makes him so dangerous."
Tanjiro clenched his fists. "So, if someone can defeat Muzan, he'll just hide again and wait them out?"
"Exactly," I said. "Humans have limited lifespans. Demons like Muzan can afford to wait for their enemies to grow old and weak. That's why defeating him is so difficult."
The room fell silent for a moment as Tanjiro processed my words.
"Alright," I said, breaking the silence. "That's enough for today."
I walked over to the desk, pulled out a piece of paper from my clothes, and placed it beside Tanjiro.
"This is a contract," I said. "If you sign it, I'll take care of everything—your identity, a place to live, food. You won't have to worry about a thing."
Tanjiro didn't hesitate. Taking the pen, he signed his name with determination.
I picked up the paper, inspecting the signature with a satisfied smile. "Welcome aboard. You're officially my employee now."
From my bag, I pulled out a small book and handed it to him.
"Take this guide," I said. "It'll teach you how to interact with the system. Say 'Status.' so that I can teach you further."
"Status?" Tanjiro muttered, confused.
In an instant, a glowing screen appeared before him, its words and numbers shimmering in the air. His eyes widened in astonishment as he stared at it, speechless.
"Good," I said, watching his reaction with amusement. "That's the first step."
And then, I taught him how to use all the functions in the interface.
"Well done, you are doing great for a beginner. Like I say, to protect our secret. From now on, we will communicate through this channel. As for your job, you will detain anomalies that are harmful to humans." As I spoke, the TV light flickered strangely. As if there was an invisible force tampering with it.
Suddenly, a blue light appeared on the TV sucking the surrounding air into it.
It attracted Tanjiro and me. I was stunned a little bit since it appeared right in front of me. The low frequency affected my physical body. Many micro-circuits were slightly burned by it.
On the other hand, Tanjiro wanted to reach that light.
Tanjiro instinctively reached for it but stopped when I reminded him of the unknown dangers it might hold.
"Stop, Tanjiro. You don't know what world is on the other side."
The light twisted and spiraled, forming a portal. From its center, a figure dropped into our world—a woman, wounded and disheveled.
"Quick, Tanjiro! She is the anomaly that I said before. Catch her before she attacks you" I urged.
Tanjiro hesitated, his brow furrowed. His nose sniffed her scent. She didn't have a smell of demons.
Not only that, she also had a unique scent that he hadn't smelt before.
He simply thought that was because she came from a world different from him.
"But she is just a lady. And she is wounded" Tanjiro said.
"I don't know what you think but she's not human," I corrected him firmly. "She's a ghoul."
"A Ghoul." he echoed, confusion clouding his expression. Slowly, he unsheathed his sword, maintaining a cautious distance from the woman. His hands trembled slightly as he held his weapon. There was no scent of the demon on her, leaving him uncertain of his resolve.
The woman's feral gaze locked onto Tanjiro, and as if to eliminate his doubts, a crimson tentacle burst out from her back, lashing toward him at a deadly speed.
It happened fast and quick which caught Tanjiro off guard.
However, Tanjiro wasn't a third-rate character. Facing death moment, time seemed to move slowly in his eyes.
Gritting his teeth, Tanjiro mustered all his strength and jumped backward. His jump was powerful enough to leave a dent mark where he stood.
The crimson tentacle struck the ground where he'd been standing moments before, leaving a hole in the ground.
"What is she?" Tanjiro was surprised by her monstrous strength. If it wasn't for his quick reaction, the one lying down there would be him.
And the way she attacked.
She was no different from the demon in his world.
"Watch out, Tanjiro. Below the floor," I warned him.
Feeling something moving below, he jumped backward to avoid the incoming attack. The tentacle sprouted and broke the ground from below.
The woman rose to her feet, supported by the writhing tentacle. Her eyes burned with a savage hunger, her posture that of a predator poised to strike.
As a predator, she exerted an invisible pressure that made any prey tremble when standing in front of her. Any weak prey will be overwhelmed by this oppressive aura.
However.
Thanks to her demon-like pressure. It gave Tanjiro a reason to fight.
He inhaled deeply, closing his eyes to steady his racing thoughts. Patience and resolve washed over him like a tranquil tide. The deadly silence spread the air.
Losing the patient, her tentacle stretched out and made its way towards Tanjiro. A sharp sound pierced the air.
The tentacle pierced Tanjiro's body and Rize Kamishiro opened her mouth widely.
However.
That scene didn't happen as that woman expected.
Instead of piercing Tanjiro's body, it pierced his after-image and broke the brick wall behind instead. Sunlight poured through the broken bricks, illuminating her enraged face.
*Clank*
Her chest spurted out blood like a fountain. Her tentacle slowly retrieved back into her body. With empty eyes and a wide open mouth, she collapsed to the ground like a puppet without string.
I clapped my hands, breaking the silence. "Splendid performance, Tanjiro. You grow stronger, sharper. This is just the beginning."
Tanjiro stared at the faint woman lying on the ground, confusion clouding his face. The sunlight clearly illuminated her body, yet she didn't burn.
However, that didn't stop him from killing her.
He murmured something, gripping his sword tighter. His thoughts raced back to the demons from his world. His sword rose, ready to deliver the final strike.
His blade slammed down with determination aiming for her head.
Suddenly, a pitch-black sword entered his view and blocked his sword.
The sound of a metal collision rang out. Tanjiro's eyes traced the owner of the sword.
His eyes widened and reflected the image of a dark knight.
"Calm down, Tanjiro." I lightly said.
Before he could move, I stepped forward, gently grabbing his arms.
"She's a sinner. A demon in your eyes," I said firmly, meeting his gaze. "Who deserves to be killed a hundred times over."
Tanjiro's brow furrowed as he looked at me, seeking clarity. I paused, letting my words sink in.
"But death isn't her destination," I continued.
I explained, my voice steady, "She killed humans - not out of necessity, but for entertainment. She let her victims experience utter despair before ending their lives. Not for food, Tanjiro. Just for fun."
Rize Kamishiro wasn't a gentle person to the core. Even if she was born as a normal human, she still harmed humans in another way.
Tanjiro's grip on his sword tightened, his expression darkening. To him, she was a vile and detestable creature.
But I added calmly, "Yet, she didn't choose this life. Her kind doesn't have a choice in what they eat. Humans are their only sustenance. If you judge something, be objective."
I shifted his confusion to the wider picture.
She may be evil. But. That doesn't mean all ghouls are evil.
Tanjiro's eyes widened, his thoughts visibly clashing.
For me, she was simply... natural. She was born as a ghoul then she must behave like one of them.
"It's like a wolf and a rabbit," I said softly. "Is a wolf wrong for eating a rabbit? Wolf wants to fill his hungry stomach and rabbit wants to live"
He hesitated, his sword wavering. This question made him reconsider the fate of this ghoul.
The image of his sister resurfaced in his mind. She became a demon. Not by choice.
And she was a ghoul, also not by choice.
Looking at the faint ghoul on the floor again, his gaze softened.
Now, he felt sympathy for her life.
Slowly, I reached out and guided his hands down, lowering his weapon.
"You'll understand very soon. Things like this can't be accepted easily in one or two days." I said gently, offering a reassuring smile.
With deliberate care, I retrieved a black bag and placed the unconscious woman inside. Tanjiro watched silently, his expression a mix of uncertainty and acceptance.
"You will face far more dangerous beings in the future. She is just an insignificant threat." I said as I sealed the bag.
For a moment, the room was quiet. Then Tanjiro sheathed his sword, his resolve firm but tempered by newfound understanding.
However, this silence was broken by my next sentence.
"Also. I see your reaction when you see that portal again. I have a half bad and half good news for you." I asked.
"Heh. What is it?"
"As an employer, I will do everything to fulfill your wish. So this is an important news that I need to inform you." I stopped in the middle which stressed the importance of this matter.
"It's likely that the final battle will happen in this world."
"Final battle. You mean we will fight Muzan in this world." Tanjiro realized the seriousness of the matter.
Tanjiro held his head with both of his arms.
"Wait a minute. If you say the final battle will happen in this world, does that mean my comrades and my sister will come to this world? Not only that, demons also come to this world" Tanjiro said, a sense of guilt mixed in his voice.
"Not so sure but I'm sure that people in your world will come to this world." I gave a subtle answer.
'Come or not. It depended on you, Tanjiro. You are the anchor that connected this world and your world.' I thought in my mind.
"Then am I a sinner who brings disaster to this world?"
"Be positive, Tanjiro. You didn't bring any disaster to this world at all. Things escalated to this situation all thank to the dick move that was made by a certain dick head. You are innocent."
"But we will face many disadvantages if we fight Muzan in this world. We didn't have any helper in this world." Tanjiro mumbled.
Tanjiro remember the scene where Muzan got blown into pieces and hundreds of demon hunters besieged Muzan in the final battle.
Even so, they still had a narrow win.
In this strange land, they naturally don't have any helper supporting them in defeating Muzan.
"Helper" I walked to the window and looked at the reflection on the mirror.
I could see a smile forming on my face.
"You are completely wrong, Tanjiro." I gave him a smile of assurance.
"You still have me here. Besides, this world is my playfield."
