Chapter 12: Chapter 12: Lines We Cross
---
Skipping Chores & Forbidden Attachments
Clark had never been one for hard labor, but lately, he wasn't even pretending to care. Farm work was Kara's thing. Let her enjoy it.
Martha, however, wasn't as amused.
"You know, there's still a whole list of chores you haven't done," she said, watching him lace up his shoes.
Clark smirked, barely looking up. "And there's a whole world out there I haven't seen."
Martha crossed her arms. "I'll take that as a 'no.'"
Clark grinned, standing up and stretching. "Come on, Mom. I'm just going into town."
Martha sighed, rubbing her temples. "Just don't stay out too late."
Clark paused. That wasn't a warning.
That was her way of letting him go.
She still hated what they did in secret. But she never stopped him.
Clark leaned in, pressing a slow, deep kiss to her lips. Martha tensed, but didn't pull away.
By the time he stepped back, her breath was unsteady.
"You're a dangerous boy," she muttered.
Clark grinned wider. "You love it."
Then, with a wink, he was gone.
Off to see Gwen.

Kara's Suspicions
Kara was no fool.
She had seen the way Clark kept sneaking off. How he'd stopped caring about anything outside of school.
It pissed her off.
So she confronted him.
"You think I don't notice?" she demanded, slamming his bedroom door open.
Clark groaned, rolling onto his back. "Ever heard of knocking?"
Kara ignored him, stepping closer. "You're getting too close to that human."
Clark arched a brow. "Gwen?"
Kara scoffed. "Don't say her name like she matters."
Clark sat up, stretching lazily. "Why do you care?"
"Because you're being reckless," she snapped. "She's weak. She's human. You can't waste time on things that don't matter."
Clark smirked. "And what about Natasha?"
Kara froze.
Clark's grin widened. "Oh, don't act innocent. I see the way you look at her. Always defending her. Protecting her. You're already attached, aren't you?"
Kara's eyes darkened. "Not the same thing."
Clark stood, closing the distance between them. "It's exactly the same."
For a moment, she didn't move.
Then, she huffed and turned away.
"You're an idiot," she muttered, heading for the door.
Clark grinned. "And you're a hypocrite."
She slammed the door behind her.

Clark & Gwen's First 'Date'
Clark met up with Gwen that evening.
It wasn't exactly a date.
But it felt like one.
They walked along the streets of Smallville, taking their time. Gwen talked about her dreams—how she wanted to get out of this town someday.
Clark just listened.
Eventually, they stopped by a small diner.
"I don't get you," Gwen said suddenly.
Clark smirked. "That's what all the girls say."
She rolled her eyes. "I mean it. You're weird. One minute, you're completely detached, and the next… you're—" She hesitated, eyes searching his. "Like this."
Clark tilted his head. "Like what?"
Gwen shrugged. "I don't know. More committed??"
Clark stared at her for a long moment.
Then he smiled.
"I guess you just bring it out of me."
Gwen flushed, looking away. "Shut up."
Clark just chuckled.
She was cute when she was flustered.
They stayed out late, talking about nothing and everything.
And for the first time in a long time, Clark almost felt normal.

A Line He Shouldn't Cross
By the time Clark got home, it was past midnight.
Martha was waiting for him in the living room.
She didn't say anything—just watched him.
Clark sighed, rubbing the back of his neck. "I know, I know. I was out too late."
Martha still didn't respond.
She just stood up.
Walked over.
And pulled him into a deep, lingering kiss.
Clark froze.
Then, slowly, he melted into it.
By the time they pulled away, Martha's breathing was unsteady.
"I hate it!"
Clark grinned. "No,You love it."
Martha's lips parted slightly, as if to argue—then she just sighed, turning away.
"Go to bed," she muttered.
Clark watched her go.
Then he smirked.
She could lie to herself all she wanted.
But in the end, she was already his.
