Chapter 19: Chapter 19: Go, Little Wolf Girl!
"Not good!"
Realizing what was happening, Donald quickly retreated. He recognized the serum immediately—it was the experimental drug developed by their lab, designed to temporarily enhance a mutant's abilities. Once injected, Wolverine's powers could return to their peak, at least until the serum wore off.
At his peak, Wolverine was the deadliest killer imaginable.
"Sniper! Target Wolverine!"
The response through the radio was unexpected:
"X-23 and Subject 757 spotted—they're attacking my position!"
"Release X-24 to deal with them. Keep targeting Wolverine!" Donald commanded.
He had no idea how X-23 and Subject 757 managed to sneak past their tight encirclement, but it didn't matter. Once X-24 was unleashed, the two of them wouldn't stand a chance. According to their data, X-23 was no match for X-24, and Subject 757's sharpshooting wouldn't harm him either—X-24 completely countered that.
The primary concern now was Wolverine, who, in the short time it took for this exchange, had already taken down ten of Donald's elite men amidst heavy gunfire and a tight perimeter.
If they didn't suppress him with the sniper rifle, everyone here could be slaughtered.
No wonder the boss had such a fixation on Wolverine.
"Understood!"
The sniper fired, and Wolverine was knocked down by the shot, preventing him from getting back up as the surrounding men poured bullets his way, keeping him pinned.
Meanwhile, George and Laura were racing toward the armored bus. They hadn't escaped the encirclement but had positioned themselves earlier, hiding behind nearby obstacles before the factory was surrounded.
As the enemy focused entirely on Wolverine, they stealthily approached the bus, which clearly housed X-24.
If they could eliminate X-24 first, most of the battle would be won.
What George hadn't anticipated, though, was how prepared the enemy was—they even brought a sniper, a detail absent from the movie.
Fortunately, he had brought the capable Little Wolf Girl just in case.
If the sniper turned his sights on him, well, he'd just have to use Laura as a human shield.
With her healing factor, even a sniper's bullet wouldn't kill her.
Though cruel, it was a necessary contingency.
This wasn't just about his own survival—if they failed, everyone, including over thirty mutant children, would perish.
Laura was small and couldn't fully shield his body, but she could protect his upper torso, where the most vital organs were. His legs, still running full speed, were harder targets.
As for himself, with his wizard's bloodline and exceptional vitality, even a non-lethal hit wouldn't be fatal unless it struck a vital area.
Once close enough, he could interfere with the sniper. While he couldn't yet alter a sniper's bullet trajectory, he could disrupt the rifle itself, causing it to wobble and lose aim.
The situation unfolded better than expected. The sniper kept his focus on the factory, drawn to Wolverine's havoc. George and Laura had attracted attention but not enough to warrant a direct threat.
Instead, the bus doors opened, and out came X-24, snarling and charging straight at them.
"Perfect!" George smirked.
Their move had worked as planned. Alongside X-24, four elite soldiers disembarked but stayed back, setting up a camera—clearly intending to record X-24's combat performance.
This group had no faith in George or Laura defeating X-24. Filming the fight was the boss's order to document the field test for later analysis.
As X-24 neared, George grabbed Laura and opened fire with an assault rifle.
He didn't immediately use the adamantium bullet—killing X-24 too soon would draw the sniper's attention, and the remaining troops would focus all their efforts on him.
That would be disastrous.
"Bang! Bang!"
Two bullets curved toward X-24's eyes. Though the bullets couldn't kill him, injuring his eyes would slow him down.
X-24 instinctively raised his arm to block the shots, but George's bullets didn't fly straight. They arced around the defense and struck their target dead-on.
X-24 howled in pain, stopping momentarily as his eyeballs regenerated.
"Alright, it's your turn, Little Wolf Girl!" George declared, hurling Laura toward the sniper.
"Take out that sniper!"
Laura soared over X-24's head, landed gracefully with a roll, and dashed toward the bus and the sniper's perch.
Meanwhile, X-24's eyes had fully healed, and he lunged at George with claws extended.
"Brutal," George muttered, dodging backward. He unleashed his magnetic powers, concentrating on X-24's arm.
While he wasn't Magneto and couldn't manipulate the adamantium in Wolverine's body easily, his pull of several dozen pounds of force was enough to disrupt X-24's movements.
Indeed, X-24's arm faltered mid-swing, allowing George to dodge again.
Not lingering for a direct fight, George maneuvered around X-24 and bolted toward the bus.
Furious at being toyed with, X-24 roared and chased after him.
George refused to engage head-on. Instead, he kept using his magnetism to interfere with X-24's limbs, narrowly avoiding attacks while inching closer to the bus.
'My abilities are still too limited,' George lamented inwardly. He had only recently awakened his powers, and though enhanced by his wizard's bloodline, they were far from their potential.
Fully developed, his magnetism could exert hundreds of pounds of force. At that level, he could easily lift X-24 into the air and pummel him.
Or, with enough training in magic, a single stunning spell could incapacitate X-24 entirely.
The future looks bright, George thought, but for now, this is the best I've got.
