Chapter 9: Bad Idea
"Alright, I just wanted to hear your strategy, and integrating vampires into human society won't be easy!"
Hearing Maverick's words, Carter nodded and sat down beside him. Mercury glanced at Blade, indicating he should leave, but Blade was indifferent.
"The first step is establishing the Vampire Police Department. This must be implemented, and we need to recruit a strong team to join it!"
Maverick said, "In addition, to ensure that vampires abide by the law, the police department must register all vampires' information."
"That's not realistic!" Mercury immediately objected. "Vampires have always valued freedom. No one will want to register, and once they do, S.H.I.E.L.D. will have all their information!"
As he said this, Mercury glanced at Carter, who smiled lightly, pretending not to notice.
"I know many won't want to register, so we'll implement a ten-billion-dollar subsidy plan!" Maverick explained. "All registered vampires can get a 10% or even 20% discount when buying blood bags!"
"Ten-billion-dollar subsidy plan?" Everyone was stunned. Carter thought about it and said, "If you do this, you can indeed increase the registration rate, but the cost isn't small. It might really require tens of billions in subsidies!"
"It doesn't matter; I can't spend all my money anyway! And the price of blood bags is inflated. The purebloods have always profited in this area, so now they just won't make any money," Maverick said indifferently.
Mercury gritted his teeth secretly. Of course Maverick didn't care—that was all the purebloods' money!
Blade agreed. "This method is good. Not only can we register vampires, but if there's enough blood, vampire crimes will definitely be reduced a lot!"
"Exactly, that's what I mean!" Maverick nodded and continued, "Additionally, we'll build several factories to employ vampires who can't find jobs. The location will be in Hell's Kitchen, near Midtown—easy to manage. We'll put the headquarters of the Blood God Group there too!"
Mercury said, "The problem is, Hell's Kitchen is chaotic, with gunfights every day."
Maverick sneered, "We vampires afraid of chaos? If they dare trouble us, we'll just contribute to the security."
"Hell's Kitchen is good. The land prices there aren't high, and it's on Manhattan Island!" Carter glanced at Maverick. He chose this place, probably to make humans think twice—no one would launch missiles at Manhattan Island!
Maverick ignored Carter's gaze. He thought of something and said, "By the way, remember to buy insurance: alien invasion insurance and monster attack insurance!"
The three of them looked at Maverick in astonishment. What's the use of buying that kind of insurance? Could there be an alien invasion?
"Just buy it!" Maverick shrugged, didn't say more, and directly changed the subject. "Ms. Carter, next, the group must establish a blood research department as quickly as possible to develop artificial blood. This is the top priority!"
Carter nodded first, then asked, "No problem, I'll set up a blood research department as soon as possible. But, why do vampires have to drink human blood and not animal blood?"
"How should I know? I've only been a vampire for over two months!" Maverick spread his hands, then turned to Mercury. Mercury shook his head and said, "I don't know. Animal blood doesn't work for us; we can only drink human blood to satisfy our hunger."
"Then let's research it together. Artificial blood must be developed; otherwise, it's impossible for vampires to integrate into human society!" Maverick said. "That's the general framework. Once we've integrated the vampires' resources, we'll start filling in the details step by step."
"Well, we need to integrate the resources first. The Speaker and the Twelve Elders are all dead, leaving too many scattered resources. It'll take time to gather them all!" Carter nodded. Seeing that Maverick had covered everything, she gestured with her eyes.
Maverick said to Mercury, "Mercury, go tell the other vampires that we've stopped the war with S.H.I.E.L.D. Also, leak some of our plans, but don't go into too much detail."
Mercury asked, "If it leaks ahead of time, aren't you afraid some will escape?"
Maverick replied, "If someone wants to escape, let them. It doesn't matter. For those who leave, others will come. I believe many vampires are willing to abide by the law. However, if anyone wants to resist, they must be eliminated!"
"Got it!" Mercury nodded, stood up, and left. As Maverick's assistant and captain of the guard, she was very important—after all, she represented the purebloods' interests.
Maverick turned to Blade and said, "Blade, you should also discuss things with Whistler. Whether you stay or leave is up to you. I look forward to you joining us!"
"I'll think about it!" Blade nodded, got up, and left. Seeing that he had taken the badge with him, Maverick couldn't help but smile. It seemed the director was on board!
After everyone left, Carter couldn't wait to ask, "You once said you'd give me evidence. Where is it?"
"Which one are you talking about? The one where Captain America reappeared and kissed your niece after your funeral?" Maverick knew he'd mentioned this to Carter jokingly to test if the Captain had returned. From the current point of view, the future might have changed.
That's a good thing. If someone travels through time and doesn't change the future, what's the point?
"I said I don't like people making fun of Steve, and he's not the kind of person you described!" Carter was a bit unhappy. She thought of something and sighed, "If he really could come back, even if he did something with Sharon, I wouldn't care!"
"You're so understanding." Maverick laughed secretly. When the Captain returned, there would be a lot of excitement. He got up, took out a document from the cabinet, and placed it on the table. "This is the evidence you wanted!"
Carter couldn't wait to open it. Inside was a personal file—the file of Daniel Whitehall!
Seeing the photo, Carter couldn't help but be surprised. She asked, "Who is this person, and why does he seem so familiar?"
Maverick asked, "You don't recognize the name? What about Werner Reinhardt?"
"Werner Reinhardt? That's impossible! He's dead, and even if he weren't, he couldn't be this young!" Carter said in shock. Werner Reinhardt was a Hydra scientist. Before she left S.H.I.E.L.D., he had been imprisoned. Later, someone informed her that he had died!
"But this person is Werner Reinhardt. As for why he's still alive and so young, you can investigate it yourself. He's the chairman of a company, so it shouldn't be hard to find out!" Maverick said. "I'm telling you again, S.H.I.E.L.D. is no longer trustworthy. Speaking of which, you agreed to help me so easily; I suspect you've already noticed something?"
Carter was silent. She had indeed noticed that the deaths of Howard Stark and his wife were suspicious. Just as she wanted to investigate, she was forced into retirement.
But Carter never thought all this was because of Hydra, until Maverick approached her and used this as a condition to make her the president of the Blood God Group!
Carter didn't care about her own life, but she couldn't accept that Hydra wasn't destroyed and was still lurking inside S.H.I.E.L.D. Her greatest achievement was defeating Hydra, and now she was being told Hydra wasn't dead? How could she accept that?
Carter put away the document and said, "I will investigate, but I want to know, how did you learn all this? Fury investigated you; before becoming a vampire, you were just an ordinary person!"
"I'm the Blood God. When I consume blood, I can get certain memories from the person!" Maverick explained. "Some elders of the vampire clan once cooperated with Whitehall. In fact, some organizations have long known about Hydra's existence. Only S.H.I.E.L.D. has been kept in the dark!"
Carter's eyes narrowed. If this was true, then the problem was serious—it meant Hydra already held high positions within S.H.I.E.L.D.
Carter said, "I hope you're not lying to me, or even if you're the Blood God, I'll make you pay!"
Maverick smiled and said, "Don't worry, I never lie. And even if I did, no one would know."
Carter retorted, "Can you be trusted?"
Maverick smiled. He remembered something and warned, "Be careful when you investigate; don't let Hydra find out."
"I know. I won't alert them!" Carter left with the documents, worried. Maverick watched her leave with a glint in his eye. Before Hydra was dealt with, Carter could still be useful.
Also, making Carter the president didn't mean she had all the power. She was just a pawn to seize power from the purebloods and influence Captain America!
After thinking, Maverick asked a maid to notify James to come in.
"While you have the vampires' money and power, you're also bound by them. But with so much money, being bound is acceptable. The most important thing is to live an exciting life! If you really can't stand it in the future, you can abandon the vampires and go your own way—I won't die anyway." Maverick held his wine and smiled slightly. If not for the excitement, why would he root himself in Manhattan? The first alien invasion would happen here.
James arrived soon and asked respectfully, "Blood God, what do you need from me?"
Maverick said, "I need you to help me with something. This must be kept secret; don't let anyone know, including Blade, Carter, and Mercury!"
"No problem; my lips are sealed!" James said happily. He was indeed a trusted aide; such confidential matters weren't given to others but only to him.
"That's good!" Maverick nodded, raised his hand, and blood formed the image of a man in purple. "Find this man for me!"
"Find someone?" James was a bit disappointed—it was such a small task. Of course, he didn't dare refuse and asked, "Blood God, where is he? Any other information?"
Maverick said, "His name is Kilgrave. He should be in the city; search for him first. If you can't find him, keep an eye on Jessica Jones; he has a lot of connections with her!"
James muttered, "Kilgrave? Who has a name like that?"
"Only a freak!" Maverick sketched images of Kilgrave and Jessica Jones on a sheet of paper. Then he said solemnly, "James, listen carefully to what I say next; don't miss a word."
James straightened up. "Blood God, please go ahead!"
"After you find him, don't do anything—don't contact him. Let me know as soon as possible," Maverick instructed. "Remember, inform me immediately. If I find out you've done anything unnecessary, your blood will no longer belong to you. Understand?"
Maverick spoke very seriously, his eyes turning blood red, making James feel he could die at any moment. He hurriedly said, "I understand, Blood God. I'll inform you as soon as possible."
"Very well. I'll write you a check for three million dollars as funds for finding Kilgrave!" Maverick's eyes gradually returned to normal. "Also, you can use the vampires' resources and select people to help, but you must prevent any leaks. Don't let anyone disclose this!"
James nodded. "Understood. I'll choose controllable half-bloods to assist. If they dare leak secrets, their relatives will pay."
"Handle it as you see fit; I just want results!" Maverick patted James on the shoulder, and a drop of blood seeped into his skin, staying in his bloodstream.
"Understood. Leave it to me!" James took the check from Maverick and left excitedly.
Maverick closed his eyes for a moment, then shook his head. "My power is still a bit lacking. If they're too far away, I can't sense the blood. Fortunately, the police station we'll establish will bring me plenty of blood!"
Blade was right; a big reason Maverick wanted to set up the police station was to obtain blood!
It's too troublesome to kill vampires one by one, and they'd resist. Now, someone else would do it for him, so he could sit back and enjoy the benefits—how wonderful!
James's information was correct. Blade and Whistler were indeed arguing. Whistler cursed, "Are you crazy? Believing what a vampire says? That kid is just fooling you! How can a vampire not drink human blood? That's a bigger lie than me saying I don't like drinking!"
"Whistler, I believe Maverick. Even if he has other motives, it's still about killing vampires!" Blade said stubbornly. "Whistler, the situation with vampires has changed. I need to know more—the vampires' information and Maverick's information!
If Maverick isn't lying, then I'd be a good director. Although his idea is a bit unrealistic, it's very beneficial to humans.
If Maverick is lying, then I can get close to him as the director and then kill him!"
"I'll never stay in a vampire's place; it's disgusting!" Whistler's tone softened a bit, but he had too much hatred for vampires and would never work for them.
"I didn't plan for you to stay. I need you to back me up and investigate things I can't easily look into!" Blade smiled, then said awkwardly, "Also, you have to help me take care of Vanessa!"
Whistler was puzzled. "Who's Vanessa? That woman you're after?"
"It's my mother!"
"Isn't she dead?"
"She's not dead!" Blade said with a headache. "She's a bit of a problem. Keep an eye on her; don't let her go out drinking human blood. I don't want the first vampire I kill after becoming director to be my own mother."
"Blade, you're soft-hearted." Whistler glanced at him, then said, "Leave it to me. I'll pull her teeth out; let's see how she drinks blood then!"
Blade was speechless. He had a feeling this was a pretty bad idea!
