Marvel System In The Boys

Chapter 11: Chapter Five

The door creaked as Derek pushed it open, the rusty hinges protesting against years of neglect. Dust motes danced in the dim light filtering through the grimy windows, casting an eerie glow on the sparse interior. The safe house smelled of mildew and stale air, an aroma that spoke of countless desperate moments. As they stepped inside, a shiver of apprehension ran down Derek's spine. He turned to Valerie, whose expression was a mixture of relief and lingering anxiety.

"We're safe for now," she assured him, her voice low and steady, but the tension in her shoulders belied her words.

Derek nodded, scanning the shadows that clung to the corners of the room. "Let's check for any signs of life," he suggested, gripping the handle of the knife tucked into his waistband. The brief but brutal fight against the agents of Vought had left him wired, adrenaline still coursing through his veins like a high-voltage current.

"Right," Valerie replied, her eyes narrowing as she moved with the stealth of a cat, every muscle in her body coiled with purpose. They split up, each taking a different room, the air thick with unsaid fears.

The first room was a small kitchen, remnants of old takeout containers littering the counters. Derek rifled through the drawers, finding a dull knife and a couple of forks, their metallic surfaces dulled by years of neglect. He tossed them aside; they wouldn't be much help if the situation turned dire again. The second room revealed a tiny bathroom, a cracked mirror hanging limply above a chipped sink. He could barely recognize the reflection staring back at him—scruffed, bruised, and wearied by the night's chaos.

"Clear!" Valerie called from the bedroom.

Derek rushed to her side, his heart hammering in his chest as he stepped over the threshold. The bedroom was dim, a single bed against the wall covered with a faded quilt, its colors muted by time. Valerie stood by the window, peering through the filth-coated glass as if she could see through the walls of the world outside.

"Do you think they followed us?" she asked, her voice barely a whisper.

"I don't know," Derek replied, moving to stand beside her. "But I'd rather not find out."

They stood in silence for a moment, the weight of their predicament settling heavily around them. Derek could feel the heat radiating from Valerie, and for a brief second, he was acutely aware of her presence—how strong she was, how fierce. A rush of admiration washed over him. But that feeling was chased away by the reality of their situation.

Valerie casually asks Derek, "Huh... I have been with you these days, but I never asked your name?"

Derek replies, "Derek. Derek Storm."

"Okay, we need to set up watch shifts," he said, forcing his mind to focus. "I'll take the first one."

Valerie turned to him, her brow furrowing slightly. "You've just been in a fight, Derek. You should rest."

"And give you the chance to get ambushed? Not a chance," he replied, his voice firm. "We stick together."

Valerie sighed, a soft smile tugging at her lips, but it didn't quite reach her eyes. "Fine. We'll take shifts, but we both need to be alert."

"Deal." He moved away from the window, heading to the small kitchen area to check for any supplies. He opened the fridge to find it empty except for a few leftover pizza boxes, their contents long gone. Derek felt his stomach rumble, a reminder that they had been on the run for too long.

"Nothing here," he called out, turning back to see Valerie studying him intently.

"What?" he asked, a hint of defensiveness creeping into his tone.

"Just… you look tired," she replied, crossing her arms over her chest.

"Nothing a little sleep can't fix."

"Or food," she interjected, her tone lightening.

"Point taken," Derek admitted. "But for now, we need to figure out our next move. They won't stop coming for us."

Valerie nodded, her expression sobering once again. "Agreed. But we need a plan, Derek. We can't just keep running."

"Then let's think," he suggested, gesturing for her to sit at the small, rickety table.

They settled in, the quiet of the safe house enveloping them like a cocoon. With the danger momentarily held at bay, they could afford to strategize. Valerie leaned forward, elbows resting on the table, her brow furrowed in concentration.

"I think we need to get intel on Vought," she began, her voice steady. "There must be a way to find out what they're planning. If they want us dead, it's because we're a threat to something they're working on."

"Yeah, but we can't just waltz into Vought's headquarters," Derek replied, rubbing his temples. "They have security that would make Fort Knox look like a playground."

"We'll need a distraction," Valerie suggested, her eyes lighting up with the spark of an idea. "Something big enough to draw their attention away from us."

"Like a raid?" Derek pondered.

"Or maybe we can expose one of their secrets," Valerie said, her excitement palpable. "There's bound to be something out there—something the public deserves to know."

Derek couldn't help but smile at her enthusiasm. "You're full of ideas."

"Yeah, well, it's better than just sitting here and waiting for them to come knocking," she replied, her lips curving into a smirk.

"True enough. So, what's the plan?"

Before Valerie could respond, her phone buzzed on the table, the screen lighting up with a message. She picked it up, her expression instantly shifting to concern as she read it. "It's from my contact," she said, her voice tight. "They have intel on Vought's next move."

Derek's pulse quickened. "What does it say?"

Valerie's fingers trembled slightly as she scrolled through the message. "They're planning something major—a public event. If we can get in there, we might be able to uncover what they're really up to."

"Can we trust your contact?" he asked, skepticism creeping into his mind.

"I trust them," Valerie replied firmly. "They've helped me before. We have to take this chance."

Derek weighed the options. The thought of going after Vought again sent a wave of trepidation through him, but he knew that staying put would only lead to their downfall. "Okay, let's do it. But we need to be smart about this. We can't go in guns blazing."

"Agreed," Valerie said, her eyes flashing with determination. "We need to gather supplies, lay low, and then make our move."

Derek felt a surge of adrenaline at the prospect of action. "I'll check the rest of the house for anything useful. You stay here and keep an eye on the message."

She nodded, and Derek stepped out of the room, the excitement building in him. Maybe this was the break they needed. Maybe they could finally turn the tide against Vought.

---

Derek moved through the safe house, searching for anything that might help them in their mission. He checked the living room, where old furniture sat covered in dust, forgotten by time. An ancient TV sat in the corner, the screen cracked, yet somehow it felt like a relic of a bygone era. He ran his fingers over its surface, lost in thought.

"Derek…" he whispered to himself, savoring the name that had just become a part of this new chapter of his life. He could hardly remember the last time he introduced himself to anyone.

Back in the bedroom, he heard Valerie's voice, slightly raised. "Derek! You have to see this!"

He rushed back to find her holding her phone, her eyes wide with urgency. "It's the coordinates for the event. It's happening day after tomorrow at the Vought Tower!"

"That's quick," Derek said, a knot tightening in his stomach. "Are we ready for this?"

"We will be," Valerie replied, determination etched into her features. "But first, we need to focus on you. We've been through hell, and I realize I don't even know your name until now. It's about time we get to know each other, don't you think?"

"Yeah, I suppose so," he said, feeling a mix of vulnerability and intrigue.

Valerie sat down on the edge of the bed, patting the spot next to her. "Come on, sit. Tell me about yourself, Derek Storm."

He hesitated for a moment, unsure of where to begin. But something in Valerie's gaze urged him on. "Well, I grew up in a small town, nothing special. My life changed when I got my powers. At first, it was exhilarating. I felt invincible, like I could do anything."

"Sounds amazing," Valerie said, leaning in closer. "But it must have come with its own set of challenges."

"Definitely," he replied, the memories flooding back. "I didn't know how to control them at first. I hurt people—people I cared about. It took a long time to learn how to use my abilities responsibly."

"And now?" she prompted.

"Now, it feels like I'm just running away from the consequences of my past. Vought… they're a constant reminder of that." Derek ran a hand through his hair, frustration boiling beneath the surface.

Here's the continuation of Chapter 5, focusing on Scenes 3 and 4, delving deeper into the relationship between Derek and Valerie while building anticipation for their next move against Vought.

Derek glanced away, his heart heavy with the weight of memories. The room was thick with silence, save for the distant sounds of the city outside—a world that felt so far removed from their reality in the safe house. Valerie studied him closely, her expression softening.

"Derek, you're not alone in this," she said, her voice soothing. "I know what it's like to feel trapped by your past. I've been running from Vought for years, trying to survive. They've taken so much from me."

He met her gaze, finding solace in her understanding. "What do you mean?" he asked, genuinely curious.

She sighed, her eyes clouding with memories. "I used to work for them. I believed in their mission. I thought I was making a difference, but… it was all a lie. They used me to further their agenda, and when I tried to leave, they came after me."

Derek felt a surge of anger on her behalf. "That's awful. You didn't deserve that."

Valerie shrugged, a bitter smile crossing her lips. "It's a hard lesson, but I learned how to fight back. I've seen what they're capable of, and I refuse to be a pawn in their game any longer."

"Then we're on the same page," Derek said, feeling a sense of camaraderie. "We're not just fighting for ourselves. We have to expose them for what they really are."

"Exactly," she replied, her eyes brightening. "But we need to stay focused. We can't let our emotions cloud our judgment. If we're going to do this, we have to be strategic."

"Right," he agreed, taking a deep breath. "So what's our next move?"

Valerie leaned back, her eyes narrowing in thought. "We need to gather intel before the event tomorrow. If your contact can get us inside the Vought Tower, we'll have a chance to find out what they're really planning."

"Do you think they can be trusted?" Derek asked, a hint of skepticism lacing his tone.

"I've known them for years. They're in the same fight we are," she assured him. "But we can't go in blindly. We need to prepare for anything."

Derek felt a wave of gratitude wash over him. "I don't think I could do this without you."

Valerie smiled, a genuine warmth radiating from her. "You're stronger than you realize, Derek. We make a good team."

As they locked eyes, the air between them seemed to shimmer with unspoken tension. For a moment, the chaos outside faded away, and all that mattered was the connection building between them.

"What about you?" he asked, breaking the spell. "What's your story? What do you want out of all this?"

Her expression turned serious as she shifted her gaze to the floor. "I want to take them down, for all the lives they've ruined. I want to expose their corruption and make them pay for what they've done. But more than that, I want to find a way to reclaim my life."

Derek nodded, understanding the weight of her words. "I get it. We all have our demons to face."

"Then let's face them together," Valerie replied, her voice firm with resolve.

Derek felt a rush of determination, the promise of their shared mission igniting a fire within him. "Together," he echoed, feeling a newfound sense of purpose.

---

As the night deepened, they settled back into their respective roles. Valerie pulled out her phone again, her fingers dancing across the screen as she reached out to her contact for more information. Derek paced the room, his mind racing with strategies and contingencies.

The atmosphere felt charged, the tension palpable. Every glance exchanged seemed to hold a deeper meaning, and Derek found himself stealing furtive looks at Valerie, admiring her resilience. The way she carried herself, the fire in her eyes—it drew him in, igniting feelings he hadn't anticipated.

"Got it!" Valerie exclaimed, breaking the silence.

He turned, intrigued. "What did they say?"

"They've arranged for us to meet at a diner near Vought Tower. They'll give us the intel we need," she replied, excitement lighting up her features.

"That's great! When?" Derek asked, feeling a surge of adrenaline at the prospect of action.

"Tomorrow morning. We need to be there early, and it's not far from here," she explained, her tone shifting to serious. "But we need to be careful. Vought's eyes are everywhere."

"Understood," he replied, his mind racing with the implications. "What if they try to set us up?"

"I've considered that. We need to go in prepared. We can't just walk in without a plan," she said, determination resonating in her voice. "If things go south, we need an exit strategy."

"Agreed," Derek said, pacing again. "I'll create a distraction if things get hairy. You grab whatever intel you can."

"Good. But let's hope it doesn't come to that," Valerie replied, her expression turning serious.

They fell into a comfortable rhythm, strategizing for the morning ahead. As they spoke, Derek noticed the small things—the way Valerie's eyes sparkled when she was passionate, the subtle inflection of her voice as she outlined their plan, and the determination that radiated from her. He felt drawn to her in a way he hadn't expected, a connection forming between them amidst the chaos.

"Derek," Valerie said, breaking him from his thoughts. "We should probably get some rest before the big day."

"Yeah, you're right," he agreed reluctantly.

They settled into a tense quiet, Derek taking the first watch while Valerie attempted to get some sleep. He couldn't shake the feeling that something monumental was about to happen, and the adrenaline kept him on edge.

As he stood by the window, scanning the darkened streets, he felt a presence beside him. Valerie had joined him, her eyes wide with uncertainty.

"Can't sleep?" he asked gently, concern creeping into his voice.

"Just thinking," she replied, her gaze distant. "About everything we're facing."

Derek turned to her, feeling the gravity of the moment. "I know it's scary, but we're in this together. Whatever happens tomorrow, we'll face it side by side."

Valerie's lips curled into a soft smile, and Derek felt his heart skip a beat. "You really mean that, don't you?"

"Of course. You're not just some partner to me, Valerie. You're…" he hesitated, searching for the right words. "You matter to me."

"Derek…" she began, her voice trailing off.

Before he could say more, she stepped closer, the distance between them closing. Derek felt a surge of warmth as her presence enveloped him. He could see the vulnerability in her eyes, the unguarded emotions that mirrored his own.

In that moment, everything else faded away—their mission, the threat of Vought, the chaos of their lives. It was just the two of them, standing together, caught in the gravity of their connection.

"I care about you too, Derek," Valerie admitted softly, her voice barely above a whisper.

His heart raced at her words, a thrilling rush of emotions crashing over him. In the silence that followed, he reached out, hesitating only for a moment before brushing his fingers against her arm, a simple yet intimate gesture.

As their eyes locked, he felt an undeniable pull—a magnetic force drawing them together. It was both terrifying and exhilarating, the promise of something deeper burgeoning between them.

"Whatever happens tomorrow, I promise to protect you," he said, his voice steady.

"I know," Valerie replied, her gaze unwavering. "And I'll do the same for you."

The moment lingered, charged with unspoken words, anticipation thick in the air. Derek could feel the walls they had built around themselves beginning to crumble, revealing the raw humanity beneath.

"Let's get some rest," he finally suggested, breaking the tension. "We'll need our strength for what's coming."

"Yeah," she agreed, though her voice was soft, almost reluctant.

As they settled back into their respective spaces, Derek couldn't shake the feeling that everything was about to change. Tomorrow would be a turning point—not just in their fight against Vought, but in the relationship that had begun to blossom amidst the chaos.

He closed his eyes, knowing that whatever awaited them at the diner, they would face it together, united in purpose and newfound connection.

patreon.com/MrFlashXO

There are 3 tiers set up in patreon.

The lowest tier is Watcher and it costs around 3$ a month. What would be the perks? U would get to read the chapters in patreon ahead of the webnovel. And not one or two chapters. But around 10-12 chapters ahead.

The mid tier is Warper and it costs around 7$ a month. What would be the perks? U would get advanced chapters as the watcher would get, plus Fan requests could be made, which would be fulfilled in the novels.

The highest tier as of now is the Legendary ARCHITECT and it costs around 15$ a month. This has the most perks. U would not only get advanced chapters. Not only fan requests. U can play a great role in the novel itself. U would also get a special side story. That won't be available for the other two tiers. And there would be other benefits added later as the number of patreons and readers increase.
