Marvel: Starting from Constructor Luke

Chapter 17: Satellite Beam

The sky was pouring down rain.

The dome of the base slowly opened towards the sky. Over forty heavy transport helicopters lifted the Jaegers from their bays and slowly ascended. They were headed towards the coastline.

Time passed, second by second. Before the Kaiju arrived, the Jaegers were successfully deployed.

"The Striker Eureka is in position." Herc Hansen and his son reported after the Striker Eureka steadied itself in the water.

"Stay one mile off the continental shelf. Do not engage unless necessary." In the PPDC base, Stacker's voice came through the communication device, reaching the ears of the Hansens.

"Cherno Alpha has reached the designated area and is detaching from the transport." Aleksis and Sasha Kaidonovsky said as the heavy Cherno Alpha crashed into the sea, with its balance and stabilizing systems kicking in to help it stand.

"Crimson Typhoon is in position." The three Wei brothers also reported their status.

"Gypsy Danger is deployed successfully." Raleigh Becket made a fist with the Jaeger's mechanical arm, drawing the attention of the Cherno Alpha pilots.

"Kurtulo has secured the coastline, lighting systems activated." Mako Mori reported from Kurtulo's cockpit. Despite this being her first combat mission, her mind remained calm. After clearing unnecessary distractions and memories, Kurtulo's somewhat hunched backup compartment opened. A brilliant white light shot upwards, expanding in the air and becoming a radiant sun-like beacon, illuminating the dark surroundings.

"Good job." Raleigh Becket complimented.

"Listen, this Kaiju is no simple matter! There are two massive fourth-grade Kaiju and one fifth-grade, which so far is completely unknown except for its enormous size and weight. Be cautious when engaging. Do not underestimate them!" Stacker's serious voice echoed through the communication system.

Five Jaegers—excluding the Striker Eureka, stationed one mile offshore as the last line of defense—began to spread out, occupying their assigned sectors.

Blinding spotlights swept through the darkness, patrolling the area while the pilots also had to keep an eye on the changing sea waves.

Suddenly, a wave appeared to the left of Crimson Typhoon . Hidden beneath the wave, something enormous moved quickly beneath the surface. Crimson Typhoon immediately sensed the disturbance, but before it could react, a tail shot out of the water and struck the Jaeger's midsection, sending it flying.

A monstrous roar filled the air as a Kaiju resembling a giant gorilla mixed with a crocodile burst from the ocean. Its muscular arms slammed into the water, and when it stood upright, its clenched fists looked like massive iron hammers.

The Wei brothers piloted Crimson Typhoon, stabilizing it with the mechanical arms as it rose from the seabed. They readied their stance. Three high-speed, hardened rotating blades on the arms whistled through the air, cutting it into sharp strands. When Raiju attacked again, they swiftly swung the blades, aiming for its neck.

Sparks flew as the blades struck the Kaiju's tough hide, and even the seasoned Wei brothers were taken aback.

It was too tough!

Even the upgraded blades weren't causing the expected damage. If it had been the old Crimson Typhoon without the upgraded blades, the strikes would have barely left superficial wounds.

The closest Jaeger, Cherno Alpha, began to move forward, splitting the waves to assist. However, another Kaiju, the Category 4 Scunner, appeared, blocking its path.

Gypsy Danger and Kurtulo were about to move in when the sea ahead of them surged again. From the water, a Kaiju resembling a hammerhead shark with three spear-like tails burst forth.

The moment anyone laid eyes on it, whether it was Raleigh, Mako, the Hansens, or Stacker back at the base, they couldn't help but suck in a breath. A sense of impending danger filled the air.

The 80-meter-tall Jaegers appeared to be metal giants, but in front of this Category 5 Kaiju—codenamed Slattern—they seemed as small as children compared to adults.

Mako stared at the virtual screen, which projected the Slattern and its accompanying information. It was suffocating.

Height: 90-182 meters (Crawling and Standing Form)

Length: 274+ meters

Weight: 6700+ tons

Danger Level: Extremely Dangerous

After years of combat with the Kaiju, the PPDC had gathered some data. The higher the Kaiju's level, the stronger they were. The larger the Kaiju, the more destructive and lethal they became. This first fifth-grade Kaiju, the Slattern, was the most dangerous one encountered so far.

Slattern didn't attack immediately. Its four blue eyes scanned the battlefield, and then it lowered its stance to crawl, with its three long tails swaying like willow branches in the wind. Its gaze locked on Mako and Raleigh.

"I'll go first, to test its strength." Raleigh Becket said over the communication channel.

"Be careful!" Mako nodded. As one of Gypsy Dangers mechanics, she knew the Jaeger's capabilities well, and with her support, Raleigh could probe the Kaiju.

The massive Gypsy Danger began to stride forward, charging towards Slattern. Every step caused a huge splash in the water.

Slattern roared and charged headlong into Gypsy Danger. The two titans collided, and as expected, Gypsy Danger was sent tumbling through the water, while Slattern, seemingly unharmed by the attack, stood unshaken.

Slattern attempted to pounce again, but a massive beam shot from the side, hitting it squarely and causing it to stagger. The skin on its body darkened from the impact. It turned its hammerhead-like head towards the source of the beam, where another Three-Eyed Jaeger stood. It transformed its arm into a mechanical palm after the cannon barrel shifted.

Roar!

Slattern roared angrily, and the huge sound waves set off a surging wave. Approaching, the huge body twisted in the sea water. With a dexterity that did not match its huge body, it turned around and ran to Kurtulo that was piloted by Mako Mori.

"One!"

"Two!"

"Three!"

"Explode!"

Mako Mori meditated on the countdown. When the approaching Slattern wanted to jump up and press Kurtulo under its body, Mako Mori moved Kurtulo back two steps. Then, just as it lunged, the water beneath it exploded, and numerous golden light columns shot up, hitting it squarely in the chest.

Energy bolts!

High-density energy beams were released in a ball of light, and their explosions created extremely powerful light columns capable of destroying anything within their range.

Before Gypsy Danger charged, Mako Mori switched to hand cannon mode. However, she first released a dozen or so more energy lightning bolts around her before using the ion beam cannon to support Gypsy Danger.

"Did you hurt it?"

Stacker, who had been monitoring the battlefield, looked at the Slattern, who had been hit by several energy bolts and was screaming in pain, and nervously asked Tendo Choi.

"It's injured." Tendo Choi's words made Stake's face brighten. However, the next second, Cai Tiantong, with a grim expression, added somewhat hopelessly: "Its life signs fluctuated and weakened, but it wasn't severely injured. With the vitality of a Kaiju, these injuries will only make it more enraged. Preliminary evaluation shows that Slattern's skin is thick, highly elastic, and energy-resistant. Neither Gypsy Danger's physical attacks nor Kurtulo's energy attacks have caused any fatal injuries!

If we rely solely on brute force, I think it will be very difficult for us to defeat it."

"Damn it!"

"Unless something unexpected happens, this should be the most perfect Kaiju we've ever encountered. It almost has no weaknesses. High lethality, high agility, high defense. And based on the combat data sent by Mako and the others, the opponent even seems to possess some intelligence," Tendo Choi gritted his teeth. "It's probably the kind of nightmare we never want to face—our most troublesome opponent."

"Striker Eureka requesting to engage. Let us help Crimson Typhoon and the others. Let's first deal with those two Category 4 Kaiju, and then focus on taking down Slattern." Herc Hansen suddenly spoke up over the communication channel. The battle had already been going on for over ten or twenty minutes. While their comrades were fighting fiercely ahead, narrowly escaping danger, they could only watch from afar, which made him quite frustrated.

"Herc, you need to understand that we must have a high-performance Jaeger to execute the final plan. We don't have the time or resources to build new ones," Stacker Pentecost said gravely.

"I know, but if we fail to intercept this time, I'm afraid it will be very hard to carry out the plan. This attack is unlike anything we've seen before. Whether it's Slattern or the two level-four Kaiju, they are not ordinary. They're stronger! Faster! They even understand tactical cooperation! Clearly, the neural link plan has made the enemy precursors desperate," Herc Hansen replied.

"Are you disobeying orders?" Stacker asked.

"You know how quickly opportunities slip away," Herc Hansen exchanged a look with his son, Chuck Hansen, and activated Striker Eureka, racing toward the battlefield where Cherno Alpha was fighting.

...

"Where's Dr. Luke?" Stacker Pentecost slammed his hand on the desk and asked.

"He's probably in the mech repair base," Tendo Choi replied.

"Bring him here! As the designer and manufacturer of the sixth-generation mech, Kurtulo, I want to ask him if it has a chance of defeating the level-five Kaiju, the Slattern," Stacker said seriously. "If it, with the help of Gypsy Danger and the others, can defeat Slattern, then we won't need to resort to the final step."

"What if it can't?" Tendo Choi asked, and immediately realized it was a foolish question.

"If it can't, then we'll figure out how to lure them away. I'll make sure it gets a taste of the big one in the base," Stake said fiercely.

"A nuclear bomb won't solve this thing."

Luke Field, who had been called over, responded softly upon hearing Stacker's plan. He looked at the projection screen showing Slattern, who was picking on Gypsy Danger, seizing any opportunity to dismantle its components, nearly dismembering it multiple times. This was a Category 5 Kaiju, which could withstand a nuclear bomb just by relying on defense.

"Can Kurtulo handle Slattern?" Stacker asked Luke.

"If the pilot is good enough," Luke Field replied, shrugging. "Don't worry, as the designer and manufacturer of Kurtulo, this is not its limit. Moreover, I requested some better equipment before coming."

"Better equipment?" Stacker repeated, chewing over the words.

"Some sensitive items that require prior approval. But I went through the expedited process. They should already be aware of the situation here. The approval should be coming through soon," Luke Field said with satisfaction.

Though the past few years had been busy, Luke had felt fulfilled. The consumption of dimensional energy was faster than he had anticipated, and soon he would have to leave this world. For a moment, Luke felt reluctant, for in this world, he could do his research using other people's funds, level up, and at least two great nations supported him wholeheartedly, always helping when the right projects came along. If he needed manpower, money, or support, it was all provided.

In this world, Luke could research whatever he wanted, and validate whatever technology he wished, as long as it didn't exceed the technological limits of this world. There were no superheroes, supervillains, dimensional demons, or magical beings to disrupt his plans, unlike in his homeworld. The only obstacles here were Kaiju.

In these past years, the returns were likely to be greater than the five years spent leveling up in his homeworld.

Of course, the countries in this world wouldn't lose out either. Although Luke Field had wasted a lot of resources on his research and upgrades, he had also left behind many technological products and reserves for the world.

A communication connected to the PPDC liaison channel. A cold-faced man appeared on the projection.

"Dr. Luke, your application has been approved," the man said.

"Thank you, I thought I'd have to wait another hour," Luke Field shrugged.

"What exactly is it?" Stake asked, frowning after the communication was disconnected.

"Just an orbital particle cannon. But I prefer to call it a satellite beam," Luke Field began working on the PPDC system.
