Chapter 14: Cherno Alpha
Syndey.
Inside a villa.
Businessmen, celebrities, politicians, and scholars are laughing and chatting at the reception. In the center, a small group of seven or eight people drew all the attention. Surrounding them are numerous others, seemingly waiting for an opportunity to join in. The few beautiful women lucky enough to be close by are attentively listening to the conversation of the seven, their faces bright with smiles as they support them.
"It's been almost an hour, and the Kaiju is still blocked outside. This fully illustrates the role of the Anti-Kaiju Wall. If we had adopted this method ten years ago, instead of launching the Jaeger Program, we might have had several years of peace. Fortunately, mistakes can always be corrected, and truth will eventually come. We will be the saviors of this world!"
One of the middle-aged men in the group, holding a glass of wine, spoke passionately. He is one of the contractors of the Anti-Kaiju Wall project. The wall in Sydney was constructed by his construction company. This has made his life much easier, and he has made a fortune from it.
"I agree, those whose heads are filled with only fighting are too rigid. All we needed was a wall to keep those monsters out. Look at what they've done over the years. The funds invested in the Jaeger Program have almost drained the reserves of the United Nations, even affecting the livelihoods of the people. Many can't even afford to eat, yet they still only think about fighting." A well-dressed socialite with a small mustache spoke in a tone of lamentation.
"Marshal Stacker from PPDC even asked me if they should send their Jaeger pilots to handle the Kaiju. Why should we handle them? Just don't let them in, and that's enough. So I declined his offer. I don't have extra money to pay for his security fees." The speaker, surrounded at the center by the group, was a Senate Chairman, with a balding head and a bulging belly.
"PPDC, an organization that's about to become history. Haven't they already been disbanded by the alliance and turned into an underground organization? In my opinion, they should destroy the remaining Jaegers as well! It's an underground organization that's already lost its official status, so why should they still have a base and dangerous weapons?"
"Marshal Stacker is still worthy of respect. After all, he has made huge contributions to global security."
"Sorry, Senator, the United Nations no longer recognizes his position as Marshal of PPDC. Although everyone still calls him Marshal out of respect."
"That's true."
"Look at the image of this wall, it's so strong! It's almost like another miracle project — the Great Wall!"
Everyone exchanged words with smiles on their faces, and in front of them was a projected virtual screen. Outside the wall, a Kaiju was relentlessly attacking the so-called Anti-Kaiju Wall they had been boasting about.
Those around them were complimenting and echoing the words of the core seven, until suddenly, a monstrous Kaiju head appeared, emerging abruptly from the shattered wall. With a head shaped like a cleaver, its massive body was accompanied by flying rocks and dust. In the terrified gaze of the crowd around, it strode into the city as if it were walking into its own backyard.
Its huge pupils swiveled in their sockets, observing the panicked crowds running in all directions like ants, its expression almost seeming to show a bit of mockery. The massive roar, accompanied by the howling winds, echoed through the city protected by the wall, making the panicked people even more frantic.
Watching the Kaiju break through the Anti-Kaiju Wall, which they had spent the past hour boasting about, the smiles on their faces instantly froze.
"Didn't we tell the people to go to the shelters in advance?" The Senate Chairman, the highest-ranking person present, asked dryly, his gaze fixed on the Kaiju strolling through the breach in the Life Wall, watching the panicked crowd on the screen. People were dying under the Kaiju's foot, and buildings were being destroyed. His voice was devoid of emotion, though his instincts had already sensed something was terribly wrong.
"We thought the Anti-Kaiju Wall was indestructible and that there was no need…" The secretary beside him looked a little embarrassed.
"Is this being live-streamed globally?" The Chairman narrowed his eyes.
"Yes, there are reporters recording the defensive capabilities of the Anti-Kaiju Wall to reassure people worldwide," the secretary wiped sweat from his forehead.
"The Life Wall was supposed to block Category 4 and below Kaiju. Who was it that assured me of that?" The Chairman suddenly asked.
"Mr. Charles," the secretary answered.
The Chairman's stern gaze fell on Mr. Charles, the contractor for the wall, who looked anxious and pale. "Perhaps you need to explain this to me and to the public. You can't cut corners on this kind of project, Mr. Charles." With that, the Chairman threw down his wine glass and began walking toward the exit of the villa, his steps filled with authority.
"Contact Marshal Stacker and have him send Jaegers immediately! Also, has Striker Eureka been evacuated? If not, stop it! Have them block this damn Kaiju!" The Chairman lowered his voice, angrily ordering his secretary. He had already found someone to blame, but now he wanted to create more room for maneuver and minimize the damage.
...
PPDC. Tendo Choi's tone was somewhat urgent as he announced.
"There's another Kaiju life sign, and it's rapidly approaching Sydney."
"Tell me its strength!" Stacker asked, his face grim.
"Category 4!" Cai Tiantong replied.
"What about Striker Eureka?"
"Mr. Hansen and his son have deployed."
"What's Sydney saying?" Stacker's face showed helplessness. In the past, whenever a Kaiju appeared, PPDC had full authority to respond, but now, after losing their official organization status, they saw a Kaiju appear and wanted to offer help, but had to first gain permission. Otherwise, if the other party used the excuse of invading their territory to shoot down their Jaegers as intruders or caused trouble later, Stacker wouldn't have any grounds to argue.
"They've requested Jaegers to deal with the Kaiju," Tendo Choi said, his tone somewhat strange, especially thinking back to an hour ago, when they had adamantly refused to deploy any help, claiming that the Anti-Kaiju Wall would ensure their safety.
"Prepare the Kaidonovsky couple for deployment," Stacker sighed in relief.
...
The massive body of Sriker Eureka slammed heavily into a building, followed closely by a Kaiju, resembling a rat with sharp teeth, leaping onto it.
"This is bad. Did headquarters say when reinforcements will arrive?"
Inside the cockpit of Striker Eureka, Chuck Hansen, who had previously been all defiant, was now working in perfect sync with his father, Herc Hansen, controlling the Jaeger to turn over and dodge. At the same time, they exchanged a look with each other. Thanks to the neural interface, their communication often only required a glance. As a genius pilot, Chuck had no fear of any Kaiju when it came to one-on-one combat.
The powerful Striker Eureka had been through many battles, and since its service, nine Kaiju had already fallen to the hands of the Hansen father-son duo.
However, two Category 4 Kaiju still brought them pressure. Especially because these two Kaiju were intelligent and coordinated well with each other. This made them much harder to deal with. What was more frustrating for Chuck, though, was that he felt these two Kaiju were toying with them.
Yes!
Although this thought seemed abrupt and somewhat absurd, he couldn't shake the feeling, and his father, linked via the neural bridge, agreed with his judgment.
These two Kaiju were indeed toying with them, like cats playing with mice.
"Anytime!" Herc Hansen punched the oncoming Kaiju, causing it to stagger. But the other Kaiju came from behind and slammed into them. Its monstrous jaws clamped down on the Jaeger's arm, biting down hard, pulling out a bunch of parts. The Striker Eureka shook violently, and sparks erupted from the cockpit. Father and son reacted swiftly, adjusting their posture to restore balance to the machine.
The coordinated attacks from the two kaiju forced the Hansens into a difficult position. Withoutreinforcements and with no surprises, they knew that once the Kaiju were done playing, their best-case scenario was to take one down with them. The recent hit that had caused damage to Striker Eureka seemed to indicate that the Kaiju were losing interest in the machine.
A massive roar and a flash of fire streaked across the sky. Then, a very distinctive Jaeger dropped from mid-air and landed heavily in the center of the battlefield, like a dividing line between Striker Eureka and the kaiju.
Cherno Alpha.
"Come on, little cuties! Let's have a little fun!"
A woman's voice came through the PPDC Jaeger communication channel, reaching the ears of Hansen and his son inside Striker Eureka's cockpit.
Sasha Kaidonovsky.
One of the pilots of Cherno Alpha. A strong, decisive woman with a lot of connections. Often, she didn't seem like a woman at all, but more like a queen. However, her excellence and power couldn't be denied. You could see that in her unbroken record of piloting a first-generation Jaeger for years.
At least, seeing Cherno Alpha, a fortress-like machine, now standing between them and the two Kaiju gave them a sense of security.
"I think it's changed a lot." Chuck said as he stood up, muttering to his father. Cherno Alpha, being one of the first-generation Jaegers, was well-known for its design and purpose in the PPDC. Even though it had undergone many repairs and upgrades over the past decade, there had been no major changes.
"Recently, the PPDC has significantly upgraded the active Jaegers. I heard they've added a lot of powerful weapons. We've missed out." Herc Hansen responded, synchronizing his movements with Chuck's as they prepared to engage.
The twin-bladed battle axes on Cherno Alpha's arms flipped 180 degrees, locking into place in her metal hands with a sharp click. The metal blades gradually turned red, then began to glow a golden yellow from the heat.
"Cool! I want to add something like that to Striker Eureka," Chuck whistled. Then, with surprising agility and speed, he darted past the seemingly clumsy Cherno Alpha, directly charging at one of the Kaiju. The damage to their Jaeger didn't stop them from continuing to fight, as long as the battle wasn't over and the machine wasn't out of control.
Like a silent giant, Cherno Alpha charged at the other Kaiju, which had a knife-like head.
The battle axe was raised high, then came crashing down!
The right-hand molten battle axe sliced through the Kaiju's thick, armor-like skin with ease, hotter than lava, evaporating it before any blood could spill. Then, the next strike came from below, creating an X-shaped wound across the Kaiju's body in just a few seconds.
Its' scream was deafening.
But Cherno Alpha was as silent as a ruthless butcher. After making the X-shaped wound, it seized the opportunity and swiftly chopped off both of the Kaju's forelimbs with two more strikes. The wounds were charred black, with no blood spattering out. A foul, burnt smell lingered in the air.
Equipping Jaeger hunters with cold weaponry was a treatment only available with the further development of future Jaeger technology. In the first film, only the protagonist Jaeger had a chain sword.
Cold weapons alone had many limitations when facing kaiju. They occupied space and added weight to the machine. And even if they could pierce the Kaiju's armor, they often didn't do enough damage to justify their use. It was better to have plasma cannons or anti-kaiju missiles.
But by the second film, the new generation of Jaegers was generally equipped with specialized weapons, such as thermal chain swords, electric arc whips, ion blades, M19 Morning Star missiles, and gravity sling. These weapons proved to be crucial in dealing with Category 4 and 5 Kaiju, especially with the larger ones.
At least, the Kaidonovsky couple loved them. Over the past few months, they had even studied cold weapon combat techniques, and they wielded the battle axes like experts. There was no doubt that the thermal battle axes had transformed Cherno Alpha from a heavy-armored puncher to a powerful berserker with incredible killing ability.
Previously, it would take Cherno Alpha a long time to kill a Category 4 Kaiju, but now, with two thermal battle axes in hand, it could easily take down a small Kaiju with a single swing.
One axe swung down, violently chopping off the Kaiju's knife-shaped head, and Cherno Alpha's gaze fell upon the other, more nimble Kaiju, which resembled a rat and relied on its sharp teeth for maximum damage.
The moment the kaiju realized it was being watched, it was startled. Especially after seeing the dismembered remains of its partner, it was greatly shaken. It leapt into the air, using its powerful hind legs to jump nearly 100 meters high, trying to escape over the shattered Anti-Kaiju Wall and return to the sea.
But there was no way Cherno Alpha would let it get away.
Its massive body spun on the ground, and with the force of inertia, it swung its cooling molten battle axe at the fleeing Kaiju. After a scream, the axe embedded itself in the Kaiju's body. The axe was connected to a metal line, and a blinding arc of electricity surged from the axe into the kaiju's wound, causing severe internal damage.
Its escape plan was thwarted, and with the combined attack from both Cherno Alpha and Striker Eureka, the Kaiju fell, going down with its teammate.
Under the setting sun, the two Jaegers stood side by side. Nearby were two lifeless Kaiju and a broken wall. A reporter who hadn't reached the shelter took an excited photo, which quickly spread around the world, appearing in the eyes of everyone watching.
