Chapter 265: Announcing the League to the World
"Justice League? You mean the organization that appeared out of nowhere during the Battle of New York, protected the city, and repelled the alien invasion?"
Stephen Strange was visibly shocked and incredulous as he asked Li Yue.
"Has the Justice League become so famous in just over a month? Even Doctor Strange, who has been secluded in Kamar-Taj focusing on his magical studies, knows about it?"
Li Yue was surprised as well. The Battle of New York had only been over for a little more than a month, and it had been less than twenty days since Tony Stark and the others had publicly announced their affiliation with the Justice League. It was astonishing how quickly the organisation had gained worldwide recognition.
...
Yes, about ten days after the Battle of New York, when the world was still buzzing with curiosity about the identities of the superheroes who fought alongside Iron Man, Starlight, and Black Panther, a sensational piece of news broke from a little-known media outlet, The Daily Planet.
"Shocking! Five men, one woman, and a monster did something that will make your blood boil in broad daylight. Their identities are..."
Ahem, the above headline was a joking suggestion Li Yue made during a meeting with Tony and the others.
Of course, Tony, the others, and his girlfriend, the Daily Planet's owner, Lois Lane, immediately and vehemently rejected this suggestion.
Here's what happened:
"Exclusive Report: The Daily Planet Partners with Superheroes to Announce the Formation of the World's First Superhero Team: The Justice League!"
The announcement was quietly published on May 20, 2012, but it initially went unnoticed due to the paper's low profile. However, the same announcement on the Stark Industries website caused an immediate uproar.
"Stark Industries' largest shareholder, the renowned Iron Man Tony Stark, will hold a press conference today to announce the official formation of the Justice League, a team comprised of eight superheroes... For more details, visit our exclusive partner, The Daily Planet!"
The announcement included a convenient link to The Daily Planet's website.
...
Stark Industries' influence was unmatched compared to the fledgling Daily Planet. With countless fans and media outlets constantly monitoring Stark Industries for updates, the announcement generated a massive buzz. Reporters were electrified, their fatigue forgotten, as they realised the implications: The Daily Planet was poised to become a leading news outlet with Stark Industries' backing and exclusive coverage rights.
Reporters immediately called their editors, even in the early hours, to report the groundbreaking news.
...
The press conference took place at 10 AM as scheduled. To the world's delight, not only was Tony Stark present, but all the other heroes from the Battle of New York were there, except one. Everyone was curious about the eighth member, whose absence was a mystery.
Iron Man, Thor, Hellfire (Captain America), Hulk, Starlight, Black Panther, and Iron Fist formally announced the establishment of the Justice League.
Tony Stark outlined the League's mission and principles:
"The Justice League's mission is to protect Earth's safety. We fight only to defend the planet, without answering to any nation or organization, and without establishing any other institutions."
"The League will not engage in any form of profit-making, members will not take on advertisements or private contracts. All expenses will be covered by Tony Stark personally."
Essentially, the League was autonomous, dedicated solely to Earth's defence.
...
Returning to the present conversation between Li Yue and Doctor Strange:
"So, are you the most mysterious member of the Justice League?"
Strange quickly pieced together Li Yue's identity, his curiosity piqued.
"You've been following world news while studying magic in Kamar-Taj?"
Li Yue was surprised at Strange's knowledge of the Justice League, which indicated that he had been paying attention to the outside world.
"Just occasionally checking the internet while reading. The Justice League's formation was such a significant event that it was impossible to miss,"
Strange explained, not wanting to be seen as a fanboy.
"Alright, I won't dwell on how you know. Since you're already aware of the Justice League, there's no need for introductions."
"So, do you want to join us in protecting the Earth?"
Li Yue asked directly.
"Given that our goals align in protecting the Earth, I would be honored to join."
Doctor Strange agreed without hesitation, knowing that joining a group with similar objectives would ease his anxieties about his new responsibilities.
...
As Strange officially accepted the title of Sorcerer Supreme, Li Yue felt a sense of relief. He had fulfilled his promise to the Ancient One, ensuring that Kamar-Taj and Earth had a capable protector.
"By the way, Strange, since you've accepted the role of Sorcerer Supreme, I have a small gift for you,"
Li Yue said, an idea forming in his mind.
"A gift? Isn't the Eye of Agamotto enough?"
Strange asked, puzzled.
"You'll see,"
Li Yue replied mysteriously, disappearing momentarily and returning with a bright red cloak.
"I've found your new owner. Go ahead,"
Li Yue said to the cloak, which floated to Strange and settled on his shoulders.
"This is the Cloak of Levitation?"
Mordo exclaimed.
"The Cloak of Levitation? Is that its name?"
Strange asked, surprised.
"Yes, it's highly intelligent and has chosen you as its master,"
Mordo explained.
"Thank you, Master Li Yue. I love it,"
Strange said gratefully.
"You're welcome. Now, I'm no longer the Sorcerer Supreme. You are,"
Li Yue reminded him.
...
With the mantle of Sorcerer Supreme officially passed to Strange, Li Yue began preparing to leave Kamar-Taj. He had grown fond of the place during his two-year stay but knew his journey was far from over.
"But before I leave Kamar-Taj, Strange, there's one more thing."
"On behalf of the Justice League, I formally invite you to join us!"
