Chapter 68: Ch.67: Karna's Resolve
________________________________________________________________________________
Calcutta, Bengal, Bharat, January 14, 1944
After the meal, Karna retreated to his room, waiting for Aryan to arrive. The celebrations of Makar Sankranti had filled him with a rare sense of peace and contentment. As he sat by the window, gazing at the kites soaring in the sky, a sudden, disturbing feedback from his psionic powers jolted him. His senses, always on high alert, picked up a wave of fear and desperation.
Without wasting a moment, Karna dashed through the house, informing his parents that he had to take care of something urgent.
"Maa, I have some urgent business in the neighborhood. I will be back shortly," he shouted, his voice firm with urgency.
He dashed with unmatched speed through the bustling streets of Calcutta, his mind focused on the source of the distress.
He arrived at a dark, abandoned alley, where he saw a girl who could be considered exceptionally beautiful if not for her shabby appearance, with exotic, feline-like eyes clutching a small boy in her arms. She was cornered by a group of men, their intentions clear from the vile words they hurled at her.
"Hahaha, you can't run away from us, you monster. We will teach you and that thing in your arms a lesson you will never forget," one of the thugs said, a sinister smirk playing on his lips as he thought of the things he would do to her.
"Hmph, you thought you could escape from us… haha, how pathetic," a thug who looked like the leader said, his tone mocking.
The girl trembled in fear, shielding the child with her body.
"Please… spare us… Someone please help," the girl said in a weak voice as tears flowed from her eyes.
Karna's eyes narrowed as he took stock of the situation. His telepathic powers allowed him to sense the disgusting thoughts of the men surrounding her. Anger clouded his mind as he waved his hand, unleashing his telekinetic powers, sending the men surrounding the girl and the child crashing into the walls of the alley. Their cries of pain echoed through the narrow space as Karna's powers immobilized them, breaking their bones and ensuring they would never harm anyone again.
The girl looked up, her eyes wide with a mix of fear and awe. Karna approached her slowly, his expression softening. "You're safe now," he said gently, extending his hand to help her up. The boy clung to her, his small body shaking with sobs.
Karna's heart ached at the sight, but he knew he had done what was necessary. The men lay on the ground, their bodies broken and their spirits crushed. They would never forget the lesson they had learned that night.
"Umm… thank you, sir… for helping us," the girl said gratefully, though Karna could detect fear in her thoughts and voice. Her cautious approach, clutching the little boy tightly, confirmed it.
"You don't have to thank me. I did what any decent person would have done," Karna said, sending psionic signals to her mind to lower her vigilance and calm her.
"Don't worry, you're safe now. Can you tell me your name and why those men were after you?" he continued. Although he had already read the minds of the men and confirmed they were only street thugs of a local gang who encountered them coincidentally, he still asked out of courtesy.
"Umm… My name is Shrishti, and this is my brother Utkarsh." As she introduced them, the little boy, Utkarsh, finally revealed himself from behind his sister and looked at Karna with gratitude and slight fear, his eyes the same feline-like as his sister's.
"Actually, my brother and I were living under the nearby bridge. As we were going about our daily routine, these thugs barged into our space, seemingly drunk, and started making fun of our looks and threatening us. We had no choice but to run away for our safety and call for help… but nobody listened to our pleas…" Shrishti said, sobbing between words.
Karna nodded, already knowing the details from the memories of the thugs. They had wanted to sell both of them to human traffickers as ordered by their gang leader. He clenched his fists in anger, ensuring the thugs would remain paralyzed both mentally and physically for the rest of their lives. He could have easily killed them, but he thought this punishment was far more brutal and deserved. He also felt the need for a more active role as a vigilante to strike fear into the minds of criminals. Although Aryan had become a symbol of hope for the people of Bharat, helping everyone in need and creating fear among wrongdoers, and despite his own work at the top leadership of KAVACH and with Bharat's security structure, some elements remained in the shadows forned from the light they created.
Unbeknownst to Karna, this incident was a catalyst for the emergence of a figure whose very name would create fear in the hearts of criminals and villains, filling the voids left by the system and Aryan.
"Okay… you both can come with me. I will take you where you'll be safe from any harm," Karna said after listening to her, subtly sending psionic signals to make her believe in him.
As Karna led the girl and the boy out of the alley, he couldn't help but feel a deep satisfaction. He had protected the innocent and punished the wicked, just as he had vowed to do. And in that moment, he knew that no matter what challenges lay ahead, he would always be ready to face them.
