Chapter 356: Phoenix
[Inside a Mutant Academy on U.S. Soil]
Professor X, using his powerful telepathy, urgently contacted all beings with extraordinary abilities on Earth.
In less than a day, nearly every superhuman on Earth who had ties to Professor X gathered at the academy, including the Avengers and the Brotherhood of Mutants, filling the previously spacious campus to capacity.
Tony Stark, who was nearby, transported sets of walls made of advanced alloy from his production base. These cutting-edge, high-tech barriers surrounded the academy in multiple layers, creating an impenetrable fortress that not even a nuclear bomb could break.
Even the Ancient One, Earth's rare guardian, appeared, adding several layers of intricate magical defense arrays to each silver alloy wall. Golden glimmers occasionally emanated from these enchantments, casting a solemn, almost regal aura on the walls, like the walls of a distant palace.
Most of those present gathered in the academy's deepest basement.
The elderly Professor X channeled his telepathic power through a connector toward a closed, transparent cage in the room. Behind him, a large group of psychics, led by the Scarlet Witch, placed their hands on Professor X's back, supplying him with a steady stream of psychic energy.
All of this was to create a powerful barrier to subdue the woman confined in the cage: Jean Grey, whose Phoenix Force had been reawakened. Originally, after Zane had first triggered the Phoenix within her, Jean had been in a dormant state. But for reasons unknown, she was showing signs of awakening again.
Thus, Professor X urgently summoned all available aid on Earth.
Spider-Man, who had been in a cozy moment with Gwen, reluctantly left his reluctant lover to join the team. Bored, he shot webs around the cage's corners, tethering it tightly to the room's walls. After doing this, he realized there was little else he could contribute. So he slipped outside to the lawn, joining Banner, who had been stationed in an outer corner by the others.
"Hey, Banner, did you know? Today, I found a flower that could cry. It scared Gwen; she thought I'd learned some incredible magic from the Ancient One."
"Actually, that's not even the weirdest thing. I haven't told her yet, but just the other day, I had to deal with a bunch of man-eating statues. Those creepy stones nearly devoured an entire village."
"Hey, Banner, are you listening? Do you think any of this could be related to Jean Grey in there?"
Banner, focused on his computer, ignored Peter's chattering, analyzing radiation signals from the basement to provide scientific support. Banner knew that, despite not transforming into the terrifying monster for a long time, he was still subtly excluded by the others. Yet, everyone secretly hoped to harness the monster's power, hoping they wouldn't need it this time, with so many gathered.
Just then, Peter's Spider-Sense detected an extraordinary danger approaching. He then saw Banner, who had been tapping at the keyboard, suddenly clutch his head with a contorted face, muttering, "Hulk… Hulk… Hulk…"
"I can't take it anymore!"
"Not good, everyone! I need backup here! The Hulk is about to emerge!"
Just as Peter yelled for support on the public channel, a booming roar erupted in his ears:
"Hulk… can't hold it in!"
"HULK!"
Banner suddenly ripped off his clothes, transforming, as expected, into the towering green giant, twice the size of a normal person. Hulk continued to roar as his body swelled, reaching the height of a three-story building.
Then, with a massive leap, he smashed through the alloy walls surrounding the academy, and, in a thunderous jump, plummeted downwards, breaking through into the underground levels.
Just as he was about to crash into the cage below, Jean Grey, who was held in place by telekinetic restraints, suddenly opened her tightly shut eyes. In an instant, an invisible wave pulsed from the cage, striking the gigantic Hulk.
Then, Hulk's massive form reversed, soaring upwards against gravity at an incredible speed.
BOOM!
BOOM!
BOOM BOOM BOOM!
He crashed through several layers of alloy walls, the magical defenses unable to stop him, until he was just a distant green dot in the sky, disappearing entirely.
All that remained was a massive, human-shaped impression in the alloy walls.
"Ah! Ah! AHH!" Jean Grey, her hair wild and unbound, screamed under the intense telepathic hold of Professor X.
"Old man, I'll kill you!"
SWISH!
Before she finished, a fierce red glow erupted from her eyes, followed by a destructive wave that shot through the transparent cage, unleashing a terrifying energy pulse toward Professor X and the others.
As the superhumans watched helplessly, unable to stop the incoming wave, a portal opened in the air.
Sensing the commotion, the Ancient One rushed over, drawing a circle with her hands and creating another portal just in time to absorb Jean's wave. However, she coughed up several patches of black blood afterward.
Having given the Time Stone to Zane, the Ancient One's power had greatly diminished.
"You vile woman, you ruined my plans!"
"And all of you, none of you will escape! When I get out, I'll kill every last one of you…"
"Ha!"
"Ha!"
"HAHAHAHA!!"
"You think you can contain me for long…?"
The arrogant laughter reverberated throughout the basement, leaving the gathered superhuman heroes at a loss. Even Captain America, who usually rallied the team, frowned deeply, unsure of what to say.
Just as everyone's focus was on Jean Grey in the cage, a figure suddenly passed silently through the outer alloy wall.
Even the Ancient One's enchantments on the wall didn't react.
"So it's come to this? Fight with a few hulking brutes, and you end up causing a quantum collapse across the universe?"
"Even the little Phoenix is stirred up now."
