MARVEL -BLACK SPIDERMAN

Chapter 57: Ch-57: Ghost spider and black cat

"Bang!"

A dark figure dropped onto the rooftop, scattering droplets of rain as it landed.

The figure crouched for a moment before slowly standing up. The person had long, silver-gray hair, and even though they wore a black suit, it couldn't fully conceal their exaggerated figure.

After scanning her surroundings, she turned. Despite the night's darkness, Peter could still see the green glow of her eyes beneath her mask, shining like a cat's in the night.

After confirming that no one else was around, she moved to the edge of the rooftop, glanced down, stretched, and leapt off. She caught hold of an open window on a lower floor, effortlessly slipping inside with the grace of a cat.

Her feet made no sound as she landed inside Matt Murdock's law office. The place was completely dark, and no one seemed to be around—so quiet you could hear a pin drop.

The silver-haired intruder surveyed the room quickly before making her way to a safe. It seemed like the safe was what had drawn her in, but after a brief hesitation, she abandoned it. Her attention shifted to a painting hanging on the wall instead.

The painting was strange, illuminated with a cold glow. It depicted a bearded figure, Jehovah, casting a group of screaming people from the clouds into fiery purgatory. Below them, shadowy figures writhed in the flames as a demon sat on a massive, red throne, holding a trident. The demon had the body of a man, the head of a jackal, and a spiked tail.

After studying the painting for a moment, the intruder reached out to remove it from the wall.

Meanwhile, Gwen stood atop a bell tower, feeling the cold raindrops falling from the sky. Though her enhanced physiology meant she couldn't truly feel the cold, she instinctively crossed her arms over her chest.

She raised her wrist to check the time—it was 11 o'clock. The second half of the night was about to begin.

Half an hour earlier, Gwen had received a strange phone call from a lawyer named Matt Murdock. He had claimed to have a way to help with her father's illness. Despite being skeptical, she had no other leads, so she decided to give it a shot.

Before meeting him, Gwen had done some research online. Murdock didn't have the best reputation, being closely linked to criminal gangs. He definitely didn't seem like a trustworthy person.

Hesitating for a moment, she pulled a mask from her pocket. It was a white mask that covered her entire face, with transparent eye coverings framed by a red outline. The design resembled Spider-Man's mask but with a feminine touch and the black replaced by white.

"If I wear this mask…" Gwen hesitated, wiping away the raindrops that had collected on it.

"Maybe this will mean I have to accept responsibility—to live with this mask and lead two separate lives."

She felt a dull ache in her chest, knowing her life would never be the same again.

Glancing toward Murdock's law office in the distance, she took a deep breath, placed the mask over her face, and pulled up the hood of her sweatshirt. Then, removing her watch, she strapped on her web-shooters.

"Whoosh!"

Gwen shot a web from her wrist and swung toward her destination.

---

Inside Matt Murdock's law office, the silver-haired figure was about to remove the painting from the wall.

"Hey, do you really need that?" a voice called out from behind her.

The woman turned to find Gwen standing there, hands on her hips. After sneaking into the office, Gwen had noticed the intruder and assumed she was just a common thief stealing art. While it wasn't technically her problem, Gwen couldn't just stand by and do nothing.

The silver-haired woman, surprised to see someone behind her, frowned. What bothered her more was that she hadn't even noticed when Gwen had arrived.

"If I were you, I'd look the other way and stick to roaming the streets in a mask, instead of getting involved in dangerous things," the woman said lazily, her voice dripping with a sensual yet dismissive tone. She still held the painting in her hands.

Gwen shrugged and took a step forward. "Now that I've caught a thief trying to steal, I can't just leave. After all, we all need to do our part to protect the city's reputation."

"Thief?" the woman scoffed. "You've got it wrong. A thief meticulously plans and rehearses their heist. What I'm doing has nothing to do with that." She pressed the painting against her chest and continued, "What I do is a poetic and twisted sense of justice."

Seeing that the woman still intended to take the painting, Gwen shot a web at her.

But the silver-haired intruder was quick, flipping out of the way with feline agility. She landed gracefully, and before Gwen could react, she snapped the painting in half with a sharp "crack."

Gwen was stunned, watching as the woman casually broke the artwork.

Ignoring her, the woman pulled a USB drive from within the broken painting and tossed the remains to the floor.

"If you like the painting, you can have it, pajama girl," she said, blowing Gwen a kiss before preparing to leave.

Gwen's jaw clenched at being called "pajama girl." She might have been wearing a casual sweatshirt, but it was far from pajamas!

Just as she was about to stop the intruder, the room's lights suddenly blazed on, flooding the space with brightness.

Gwen's eyes quickly adjusted, and she turned toward the source of the sound.

Standing at the door was a man in a black suit, wearing red-tinted sunglasses and holding a cane. There was a lazy yet dangerous aura about him, and behind him stood several ninja-like figures, all dressed in black and clearly ready for a fight.

"My office sure is lively tonight," the man said with a smirk. "The last time it was this busy was when we first opened."

He adjusted his sunglasses and directed his gaze toward Gwen. "I must say, Miss Gwen, I'm quite surprised to see you show up in that outfit."
